Actually, the antagonists of the first Homefront WERE meant to be the People's Republic of China, but because they wanted to also sell the game in China, they changed it to North Korea.

Thing is, that's a really accurate description of N.Korea. I was in S.Korea for a year and the vast majority of the people there shrug off almost every shitty threat that Kim-baby over there spews. You just kind of get tone deaf to it after awhile. Kind of like simply ignoring a screaming, obnoxious toddler in an plane ride. What's more amusing is how the US military takes every single threat that comes out of there so seriously that you'd think they actually can't wait for N.Korea to grow the courage to actually attempt half the shit it says just so the US can spunk all over its face in retaliation.

The "open world game" or "sandbox" is like some sad attempt by a developer to impress us with their amazingly generic Citytownville, all the while missing the point of what makes an open world game fun. The open world only works when the world is alive, interesting, and has an identity. You can't just shove me in an open world and expect me to be impressed with your repeating building assets and lifeless NPCs. Take GTA V for example. The entire world exists as a parody of modern LA, and it totally works. The developers of this..... thing..... should have tried _something_ to differentiate their world from the usual "Citytownville" we're used to seeing
@breezeark91548 жыл бұрын
It could have been urban far-cry 3, instead it was this shit.
@ekscalybur8 жыл бұрын
The problem with sandbox games is they very rarely deliver. The box says sandbox, but they deliver themepark. I can understand why so many end up being themeparks, because so much of the audience sees doing whatever your want as exactly the same thing as nothing to do because they aren't being told what to do.
@thegoldencaulk27428 жыл бұрын
***** Watch_Dogs was criminally guilty of this. "You can hack ANYTHING..... that we say you can." The entire experience, despite being set in a giant city, felt so isolated and depressingly dim...... and the driving sucked, which is never good for an open world game who's transportation method is primarily cars. It's still the classic "see what we want you to see," only here it's masquerading as a world with choice. When I load up BF or CoD, I expect a moving museum of setpieces. The open world game (in an ideal world) should never make me feel like that, yet so many do. Compare this with another of R*'s games, Red Dead Redemption. The game is so fucking sparsely populated, yet somehow feels more alive due in part to the excellent ambient soundtrack and in part to the random encounters. There are less NPCs in that entire game than in a square mile of..... Whatevertown from Watch_Dogs (I know it's supposed to be Chicago, but besides having the buildings it doesn't feel like it at all) You can kinda tell this really bugs me, yes?

@overlordpichu55776 жыл бұрын
that might actually be part of his point really, the enemies in homefront would work better as the chinese at the end of the day, but in their effort to sell in china (which is a huge market) they piddle fiddled about and switched the enemies into being one of the nations that pretty much everyone in the world doesnt like in some form or another in order to avoid bad press in china which would hurt the games sales in china. sacrificing the design aspects of the game on the pedestal of marketability. the game still would have probably been piss mind, its just as he said in the video though its just kinda undignified and silly.

If you are going to do a game where you are Western resistance fighters then the occupied country should be Australia or NZ. No nukes, a long way from any larger allies, and a population small enough to be believably occupied by a decent-sized country. Or you could really throw convention to the wind and set it in a non-Western country. But huge and nuclear-armed America under occupation by anyone, let alone North Korea- it's kind of hard to suspend the disbelief.
@snowinowen48 жыл бұрын

BJGvideos How do you not understand it? In times when the western world was the most advanced, if a nation elsewhere in the world began to advance politically and technologically, they'd be classed as westernising. Also, like I said, it's about culture too. Australia and New Zealand have similar cultures to what would be considered the west, like Britain and the US. It's not supposed to be about geography in this context. The western world is basically a way of referring to the advanced world.
@huwguyver42088 жыл бұрын
Dont Leave Your Account Logged In yeah you absolutely could. But 1) given the size of the American market I doubt many would have the guts; and 2) a lot of the anti-American resistance in those countries were fundamentalist jihadis who have some pretty horrific values and tactics of their own (eg. bombing marketplaces and violently trying to prevent girls from getting an education) and they might be hard to empathise with as a protaganist. I know I wouldn't want to play as the Taliban, except maybe in some non-story focused multiplayer match.

Near as I can figure, the reasoning behind Homefront (which was similar to what happened with the re-casting of the villians for the Red Dawn reboot) was something like.... "Right, we need a credible antagonist. Someone who has a strong diplomatic and economic rivalries with the United States and can be a credible military threat." "How about China?" "Great, it's China then." (Half a week to launch), "Um, guys? guess who's one of the largest markets in the entire universe and is VERY uptight about criticism?"

My favorite part about this game? The PC version has a mod to strip literally everything but the arcade cabinet game of TimeSplitters 2 out (because it is literally a modern 4K-scaled version of TimeSplitters 2), and lets you simply play TimeSplitters 2 easily on modern PC hardware. So we're clear, buying this game on insane steam sale (like five bucks or less) and using it to play TimeSplitters 2 doesn't make the game itself better. It's just turning a pile of molten awful into a nice rock that reminds you of one you used to have.

This game represents the core problem with contemporary shooters.This problem is not the contemporary setting. It is the hack-kneed, poorly written, jingoistic Americanism. There plenty of interesting wars that either don't involve America or or involves them as the bad guys. But those themes are never explored so the genre gets boring. Spec ops the line is the only meaningful departure from that theme.

Still waiting on Overwatch to go free, I give it 3 more months until it turns into a TF2 hat clone, valve has made so much more money with their hat crap than they ever did selling copies of the game.
@kilroy65478 жыл бұрын
Dennis Adams eh, no doubt there will be DLC or expansion eventually, maybe then the vanilla version will be free/cheapo. blizzard typically treats their IPs that aren't warcraft with at least a little more (any at all) respect than valve.

Wilhelm II or William II (German: Friedrich Wilhelm Viktor Albrecht von Preußen; English: Frederick William Victor Albert of Prussia; 27 January 1859 - 4 June 1941) was the last German Emperor (Kaiser) and King of Prussia, ruling the German Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia from 15 June 1888 to 9 November 1918. He was the eldest grandchild of the British Queen Victoria and related to many monarchs and princes of Europe.

Is it true? Have people finally gotten sick of the modern shooter genre? About bloody fucking time. Now we're just stuck in a mildly futuristic rut, ala Titanfall/Blops 2-3
@themadhammer33058 жыл бұрын
the future(ish) genre, allows for alot more variety if the game devs run with it than the modern day. in modern shooters its either China, Russia or a PMC, in future(ish) shooters it can be sentient starships bent on wiping out all organic life. also it allows you to be more creative with the technology used and you dont always have to shoot guys in slightly diffrent uniforms. basically what im getting at is that the near future genre is only getting stale because devs either arent being creative with the freedom it allows or their not being allowed to stray to far by the marketing teams saying it wont be successful

Seeing the thumbnail, I was concerned this was a late KZbin cross-post of Yahtzee's original Homefront review. For my sake, I was pleasantly surprised this wasn't the case; Yahtzee's wordplay (in action> inaction) is as great as ever.

Not gonna lie, the game was the most boring thing I have ever seen. It's so ungodly boring, it's as if Ubisoft was tasked to make call of duty. You get the two guns you are going to use throughout the entire game at the beginning. And because you are a fucking one man battalion that pops medkits like an addict injects heroin, the enemies can do fuck all to defeat you. Here lies the problem in the infinite loop that is the fighting: you can loot dead enemies, and when you don't have any more medkits, the chance to get one when you loot a dead soldier goes up drastically (from what I've seen 2/3) and you are unkillable And here's the kicker, when you kill all the enemies, more respawn. So it's a loop of the most boring and unlikable combat imaginary. The only way to escape the loop is by A. Dying B. Running away C. Running away in real life. I prefer C.

it's crap, but it's not the worst.
@jdjohnson15918 жыл бұрын
+Pepper Millers You could say that about a lot of bad games. Ride to Hell is bad, but it's arguably not as bad as Air Control. So surely it means Ride to Hell is good and not trash, right?
@peppermillers83618 жыл бұрын
jd johnson Because unlike Ride to Hell, Homefront works for the most part. Air Control is just....I don't even know HOW that game works, or if it even works.
@jdjohnson15918 жыл бұрын
Pepper Millers I'm not saying this game is worse than Ride to Hell. What I AM saying is that just because there are worse games than this out there, that doesn't make it any better.
