I agree, but what shocks me even more is that Jack seems to be the opposite of Aloy from the Horizon games and Yahtzee doesn't even acknowledge that. When Yahtzee reviewed the newest Horizon game and called Aloy selfish for trying to do everything herself without help, it reminded me of that SoP meme/cutscene where Jack called out that one girl's BS about being the villian of the story so no one else can carry the burden. I was certain Yahtzee would acknowledge something like that, but instead here we are scratching our heads about the mind of the enigma that is Yahtzee's mind.

It's worth noting regarding the 4 letter long name thing, that the Japanese version of FF1 was also 4 letters, but used Japanese kana, so the name "Sophia" would fit. I can't say for certain, but I doubt the 4 character limit thing was as memorable to Japanese players as the 4 letter limit was to western players, because 4 kana is considerably less restrictive than 4 English letters. The warriors of light all having 4 character or less names would be a cool touch though, and something a savvy localization team could have done (perhaps by renaming "Sophia" to "Fia" or something).

Stranger of Paradise is such a strange beast. A prequel to a very simple and straightforward 1987 video game, with the convoluted writing of a modern SE game, edgy aesthetics straight out of the 2000s, and this very 2010-ish undercurrent of meta awareness (especially in the way *Jack Garland* constantly interrupts the bosses' monologues). There are people who genuinely like it however, and I think they fall into two broad categories: those with irony poisoning, and those who, in an era of algorithm-driven game and design-by-committee, enjoy how *sincere* this game is. Sadly, it's sincere in a way a teenager's edgy fanfics (which is what SoP essentially is at its core) are sincere. It's messy and doesn't have quite the talent to pull it off. With those, I think SoP could have very well become a cult hit like Metal Gear Revengeance (which it reminds me off), but as it stands, I fear its fate is to be forever remember as "that game with the Chaos meme in it".

The one thing that got missed by not just yahtzee, but so many people, is that it's not a re-telling of FF1, but a prologue. This is not a story of the warriors of light, it's a story of how Garland became Garland, and then Chaos, via time-loop/time-travel bullshit, before the warriors of light come in at the end and curbstomp him. The same warriors of light who are at a point in their adventure that they should still be struggling with level 5 goblins. That's the best part of this whole thing -- you go on this grand adventure, which is admittedly quite parallel to the ff1 adventure, become incredibly strong, and then get your teeth kicked in by a bunch of novices with their default copper swords. The fact that this got missed by so many people, despite being pretty blatant, is just testament to how poorly written and disjointed the game's story is, though. At least the combat is serviceable, and the dialogue is unintentionally fantastic in a so-bad-it's-good kind of way.

You have to get to the very end of the game and still be paying attention when the psychos are talking to get that, so it's less of a "got missed" and more of a "nobody cares". On paper I love it but jeeZUS that was a terrible trip to get to a twist only OG players have a chance of appreciating.
@nate51691

@@imatiu not an alternate timeline. Very end cutscene is the companions revealing themselves to be the four fiends, the MC taking his place as the first and final boss of FF1, and then the party from FF1 entering the boss room to fight Garland, complete with the Warrior of Light helmet on the front character. The other bit they do to show it is when the MC, Jack, finally uses his last name -- Garland. As in, the first boss who then later becomes Chaos. The convoluted plot of the game is that he is sent to the past, without memories, to stop himself, leading to him becoming himself, leading to the WoL defeating him and setting the events of FF1 into motion. Mixed with very disjointed cutscenes, flashbacks, flash forwards, and stuff not explained til the very end. But ye, anyone saying it's ff1, and not a prequel, didn't finish the game or, just as likely, didn't care about the story by that point lol
@imatiu
@imatiu 2 жыл бұрын
@@nate51691 Yeah I get those points but the whole bit with the interdimensional thingies, according to some comments, are what indicates that this is an alternate timeline, that is to say an iteration of that convoluted loop that happens after FF1 in which Jack changes things, which would explain why Jack at the end of the Game is stronger than Garland in FF1.

I'm really surprised the word "Nioh" wasn't mentioned once in this entire review. For those wondering, this game is made by Team Ninja, the devs behind Nioh. One of the game's two biggest strengths are its combat, which is essentially Nioh 3 with the FF job system attached to it. It's super fun and rewarding to experiment and mix and match new job types with. The second strength is its story. Not because it's good, mind you. Oh no, no, no, the plot is so wacky, nonsensical, and hilarious, it has its own sense of enjoyment. Like watching all the not serious parts of the story of a Yakuza game with zero context. It's the kind of story that definitely isn't enjoyable for everyone. But if you're like me (and I know I am) and you love pointing at a screen when something stupid happens, laughing, and having that be the main centerpiece of your enjoyment, you'll unironically ironically love the game's story. Also, put Jack in Kingdom Hearts 4, you cowards. You won't do it.

Jack would be the perfect way for Final Fantasy to return to KH: Halfway through the story, Sora and co. find Jack and start explaining their convoluted mission. Jack, as usual, finds it all boring and declares the trio to be evil minions of Chaos. A boss battle ensues and the Three Musketeers end up fleeing. Close to the end of the game, Sora is nearly defeated when a strange light comes from out of nowhere: It's Jack, at the end of his own magical mystery tour to find Chaos. Jack sees the BBEG and a glint comes to his eye: «This must be Chaos». They fight. Although Jack loses, he sees the Light in Sora and asks him to finish what he started. Sora--once again forging immediate True Friendship in less that 5 seconds--finds renewed hope and strength to see the BBEG to the end.

Same people as Nioh huh? That would explain that good combat with a horrible D-pad item/magic system. But wait, I just realized stances are nowhere to be seen as far as I can tell, so does that mean SoP has better combat than Nioh?
@114Freesoul
@114Freesoul 2 жыл бұрын
@@Alloveck The combat system takes some things from Nioh, but it's less of a 'Nioh 3' and more of a hybrid of Nioh and FF. The depths comes from the different jobs and abilities each job has, rather than stances. Also, if anything, the mage classes are pretty OP; Yahtzee's complaints about the casting interface are kind of overblown - if you can hold one button and move your stick, you should be fine. ...actually, hold on, did you actually just imply that stances make Nioh combat bad?
@Alloveck
@Alloveck 2 жыл бұрын
@@114Freesoul Yes I did. Over 600 hours between the two of them so far, and obviously I quite enjoyed them. (And still aren't even done with Nioh 2, decided to pause that until I could upgrade my PC rather than continue putting up with bad framerates on certain missions.) But even after all that time, stances never stopped feeling like a minor annoyance I didn't want to deal with that wasted button combos that could have been used for more simultaneously equipped skills. I love them skills, but hardly ever found any use for low stance at the very least. The biggest reason I've ever switches stances is just to use the ol' stance switch ki pulse, or to use a skill limited to another stance. If Nioh 3 dropped down to just two stances or eliminated them entirely, I'd be happy. Though a less rigidly limited onmyo/ninjutsu usage system would be my top wish. And seriously, there are effective ways to map more than four commands at once to a D-pad. Use them.

They could have remade their original game (which, from the name, I think they probably thought it would be the only one, at least in places other than Japan) into something more engaging, but instead, they tried to explain the Final Fantasy franchise of canonically non-linked/unrelated stories in different worlds by giving it an origin story that will also have nothing to do with every game before and after it. Wait, that does sound like Final Fantasy, actually.
@VonOzbourne

As ironic as it has become, the director originally thought that this would be Square's "final" game before they go bankrupt. But as someone who enjoyed playing the original back in the day, I'd have been good with a Link to the Past style remake [although not necessarily with the toony art] Just adding voice acting, some cut scenes for the expository bits, fleshing out the story a little bit more and some quality of life updates for those of us that don't have time to grind anymore, would have been a much better option than going... well, the convoluted mess route.

@@VonOzbourne I think it just shows that SE doesn't know what remake is, and calls a re-imaginging/prequel a remake and wonder why people don't give a crap about it. I mean games back in the 90s figured out how to make prequels/sequels and remakes properly without all this crap. Hell even hydlide franchise did it without making the marketing ridiculous and that's an awful franchise.

The magic system is actually great when you have two psychopathic meatshie... loyal defenders of light attracting attention for you to build up to dropping ultima on the boss. It is quite funny that he says there's so much of this game that's missing; this seems to be a running theme with everything but the MMORPG recently. FFXV consistently had complaints about being an unfinished game, Final Fantasy VII Remake was "too big" for them to finish in one game, etc. Here's a funny thing about the ailments in the game. They *can* be cured, by a very specific command ability you get from being the Monk job. In order to unlock that class, you have to max out one half of both Pugilist and Lancer. The Monk job has the "Chakra" command ability, which lets you basically heal any ailments that are causing you problems. Still feels weird that that's so hyper-specific. I say this because I heard beforehand that a few, select people were excited for it, and I thought it would be worth a laugh. After playing it, it definitely seems to be a small game pretending to be a big game. Yahtzee's right, too. The game markets one of the big highlights of the game as the fact you can dress your characters up in whatever gear comes your way. But because the gear is levelled, and certain equipment has "affinity" linked to a specific job, it becomes a lot fucking harder to pick and choose what you wanna wear unless you wanna get twatted by most of the enemies, or do shit-all damage.

Seems like this game came up with gimmicks first and then built a game around them. Like Uncharted games being made of set pieces first and then writing plot to connect them. This game has a dress your character tool, but tried to weld on a rpg levelling mechanic that handicapped the players ability to robustly enjoy the customization. Little game trying to be a Big game indeed.

Considering I never heard of this game prior to this, it sounds like the perfect summary of Square Enix’s understanding of Final Fantasy. They never really known what to do with the franchise since FF7 (maybe 9, debatably) and got caught in the “innovation” fallacy. And then get confused when things like Bravely Default, Dragon Quest 11, and Octopath Traveller, games that are iterations of stuff they’ve done in the past, do really well.

Dragon Quest and Octopath, on the other hand, appear to have officially been demoted to "mobile game" status. Fun.
