Why didn't you mortar the hearth stone?

A few tips from a 4th generation mason who does this everyday. Don't work out of a bucket. Not only is this incredibly slow, it's going to destroy your wrist over time. Get two mud stands run three planks across and put a mud board in the middle and stack stone on the sides. Not only will this be considerably faster, it will save your back and knees and give you a better selection of material. Use quality pre-mix bags and a mixer. Not only are they quality tested they are much, much faster then using a bucket and drill and mixing the ingredients your self. Do not bury your tape or paper in the joint. Put the tape on the edge where you want the finished joint to be, that way when you're done brushing/sponging you can pull the tape leaving a perfect finished edge and absolutely clean paint. Also try to find straighter edge pieces at the opening, you don't want large joints against the metal, it will crack. Metal expands, masonry does not, especially with the heat of the fireplace.

@@Unknown-nf1se Yes, This. Unless it's a heavy natural cut stone, start at the top if you can. You don't want mortar falling on you recently installed stone, if you start at the top it just falls on the hearth, which is easy to clean up.

This is close to what I did at our other house. Thank you for mentioning about how the metal lath is a directional use. Growing up doing the old style stucco before other companies came out with a foam base installation, we took some florescent spray paint to put an arrow for the direction of the lath needed to be fastened. Yes we would have a piece put up wrong, and you would notice this ASAP. Love this project Josh. 👍🏻👍🏻

Hey David! It is very important to get the metal lath in the right direction. The mortar would not adhere to the lath as well if it is not in the right way. Oh wow, sounds like you have a lot of experience with stucco. I have always been amazed with how they can take a mortar lake project and create a beautiful wall. @@TheExcellentLaborer yes, for years doing houses in historic districts to keep the homes with that original stucco look with wood batten strips. Ornamental plaster was always my favorite as well. Commercial work was always rewarding because of the different looks that may be requested. Using your imagination is wonderful as well. The rakes we used to do the scratch coat, we made ours out of metal coat hangers because we would go through them doing so much every day. I know my father is in heaven to this day doing plaster and stucco to his liking. Hahaha Continue to keep sharing your talents Josh.

Nice video Josh. Was going to ask why you go through the effort of scratch coat but the way you do it sure would allow the stone to stay in place better with the rough scratch coat texture. Most guys around here use cement board. I actually use Ardex x5 to set stone or those type of veneers 😆 it’s a little expensive, but maybe I’m just too used to using thinset for things. Nice work 👍

In your opinion, will salvaged roofing slate stand up to the weight of a Vermont Casting coal stove (450 lbs). I laid 250 square of 1/2 travertine on Hardibacker without a crack. Secret, a stable surface. Believe the slate to be of little difference? Your thoughts please

The interior of the fireplace back wall and ceiling should be covered in Fire Resistant drywall and finished to meet the fire code, as is, the fire will instantly jump into the roof. You should have recessed all of the outlets and cables for the TV. The hearthstone should be one piece. It currently looks like patio pavers. The mantle looks low-budget. The vertical stonework looks good.

I agree with starting from the top and working down. It looks better if you don't have to scrimp on the pieces to get them to fit at the top. I don't know about you, but I look up when looking at a wall to ceiling fireplace face. The eyes just want to go there, know what I mean?

a roofing nailer works just fine, but it's worth considering springing for a lathing stapler (or renting one if that is an option whee you are). They hold really well, are very fast, and for some systems they are required. typically 1"x1" staples. I also find that i get cut up less when installing razor mesh due to fasteners not being twisted loos (occasionally) during lath adjustments. look good bro, I appreciate the detail.

In my project, I am concerned about weight. 2) Which veneer did you pick for this project? I really like that look. 3) I have been concerned with my project with the mortar separating from the veneer over time. Some masonry sites suggest spraying the stone or brick lightly with water to prevent it from sucking water away from the mortar, reducing its binding strength. What is your suggestion, or is this a problem? Thank you

If you used hardy boards you would not need felt paper, but plywood is definitely cheaper and easier to work with, nice work man.

You REALLY explain things well!! Any reason why you did sheathing and scratch coat on top instead of concrete backer board? Couldn't you use mortar under the hearth stones...much cheaper than Liquid Nails ( though perfect for the mantle). We are going to do our FP Surround similar to yours, but in Glacier Stone ( real stone veneer out of a Montana quarry). Putting in a zero tolerance , Fireplace Xtrodinaire Apex 42 into FP box ( all wood like yours installed according to specs). Thanks for the excellent video!

Thanks for the great videos! I'm doing a DIY outdoor propane, corner fireplace that I want to wrap in stone veneer floor-to-ceiling on all three sides. The manufacturer (Napoleon) calls for metal studs and cement board 6 inches on each side of and below the fireplace, and the entire wall above the unit. The side walls do not have to be metal or cement board. My questions for you are: 1. Would you use a metal lathe over the cement board on the front wall? 2. Would you do the two side walls out of cement board to match the front wall, or complete as you describe in your videos? 3. Would you simply do the whole project as you described in your videos? Wow - this is the most comprehensive video I've seen for this project. It's given me confidence to tackle the same project at my house. You mentioned chase framing is 2x4 - I'll be building a interior chase that goes 18' to the vaulted ceiling. 2x4 framing is strong enough for all the weight or do I need to go to 2x6s? I think 2 x 4 framing 16 on center would be strong enough. You could always use 2x6’s if you were concerned but 2x4 should be fine. Hope that helps!

Wouldn’t the type s mortar be used straight? I thought you’d mix sand and Portland to make your own mortar.
