The joy in his voice at 2:05 is exactly what excites me and make me love fishing so much. When you hook in to a 'big" fish or one you have never caught/a bucket list fish is a feeling that's undescribable. I just recently got my brother in to fishing and for his first trip I took him to Shad fish at the bottom of the Bonneville Dam in Washington, literally the best place in the world to catch them. And I'm not talking about little tiny shad. I'm talking the biggest shad in the entire world run through that exact spot. When they are running hard "which is in August" you can catch up to 3 pound shad! And the fight they put up is a feeling you will never forget if you have ever done it. A big part of it is that you are catching them in the Columbia River in a crazy current. And if they get themselves in to the hardest running part of that current you are in for a fight. But the look on his face when he hooked in to one is something I will never forget. Now he is HOOKED, even when we are all not going together he is going out almost every day, even if it's after work and only for an hour or two and is learning everything he can while fishing all different kinds of species. If you know someone that hasn't fished before or hasn't in a long time but is in to the outdoors I strongly suggest taking them fishing, and somewhere they are likely to catch something. It's an experience of a lifetime.

target them lots in the malborough area old fisherman mate told me 30m mark he'd target them. they always have baby flounder and crabs in them seem to like it when ya bait is moving slowly along so drifting is good so that's few things that work for me anyways good luck and safe fishing to all ✌🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟

Well done Matt. Delicious eating. Under-rated eating fish in my opinion.

In snapper one east coast if you catch a lot of pannie snapper getting a few gurnards makes up for the low seven fish limit. Smaller hooks, shell fish bait, dropper rig over the sand will often give you a tasty feed of grunters to go with your snapper fillets. You will also catch blue cod or Tarakihi with the same techniques.

I caught my first in December 2020, couldn’t identify it, never seen one 30 years of fishing regular spots around Sydney. Caught my second 350km away 4 weeks later. Where have they been hiding?

Fishing on the L.I. Sound back here in CT (USA) we call those fish "Sea Robbins". I am surprised that Matt got so excited at hauling one of those fish in. We consider them a nuisance fish and throw them back and they interrupt fishing for our target species like Porgies, Sea Bass & Fluke.
@TheBeaker593 жыл бұрын
Some of this is tongue in cheek stuff ;) yes they are a species of sea robin and taste pretty much the same which is really good, generally a true fisherman eats these and lets the good gamefish go. You should fillet a few sea robins up and have a taste next time you go out. (I reckon the kiwi gurnard is a prettier fish than an east coast sea robin though) there is a nifty trick to cleaning them which is demonstrated in a few videos on YT.

It's amusing how gurnards (we call them sea robins here) are targeted and sought after in other parts of the world. Come here to the Northeast US and you'll catch all the sea robins you want. These are very annoying and hated by-catch of some of our targeted gamefish like fluke (summer flounder).
