@mendel51063 ай бұрын
The miracle is that the FedEx was a relatively small plane and did not need alot of runway to take off. Had it been a 777 or 787 that would have likely resulted in Tenerife 2.0 The levelheaded USAir pilot sensing confusion had the state of mind to reject the clearance until things got sorted out. Thankfully he was not suffering from "getthereitis at all costitis" Oh and the controller being arrogant with tunnel vision is not only not helpful but is unprofessional and leads to danger. (Professionals can make mistakes but they apologize and take responsibility for it.) I should say as well that the pilots did not initially read (or paid attention to) the signs of the taxiways even though they are meant to shine through fog, and here is a tip: making an almost 180* u-turn will lead you back to the runway you just landed on. (Only later after they realized and woke up to see they are on an active runway did they start paying attention to the signs which they clearly saw as the signs are fog resistant.) I guess they were not familiar with that airport nor were they following the chart if they had one. (Getthereitis...)

The MD-80 swung a hard right turn, then a hard left to avoid collision. The C-5 hung a sharp left turn and there was nearly a second collision. The MD-80 flew under the C-5, then continued unmolested. The C-5 disappeared as it was returning in the direction of North Island.

Everyone is making a big deal over the first incident, but the second seems more egrigious, clearing someone for takeoff that is holding short of a runway that has a jet configured for landing on it traveling at 170 knots thats 3 miles away in fog is more of an egrigious act by ATC than a controller in the 90's with no ground radar in fog being lied to by a plane that cant follow instructions.
@neilpatrickhairlessАй бұрын
The first one comes off as worse because repeated confirmation of a problem to ATC was met with an "I know more than you do" attitude. If the lady knew more than the pilots, she would have known what runway the plane was on, deducing such information via common sense understanding of what "we are on an active runway" means seconds after a plane they cleared departed and which runway Kilo taxiway was adjacent to. "We are on an active runway, looking at Kilo" immediately negates any other information the ATC thinks she knows from that point until Kingdom Come. She knew she woke up that morning and after that it's anyone's guess. Yes, the second incident is worse. But the first incident was continuously and acrively made worse by the tower.

What I could not understand as a small european PPL pilot: Why in gods name does any ATC let an airplane line up on a runway AFTER he cleared another airplane to land? After the landing clearance the runway is blocked for the incoming traffic and nobody, I repeat nobody is allowed to enter, cross or land on this runway! It is today only about 1,5 month ago that an ATC cleared my to line up and wait while I was able to see the incoming traffic on final 20 seconds prior touch down. My only answer was: "D-Exyz is holding position short of runway 18! for incoming traffic on final." After that ATC wanted to discuss the situation because ATC said that there was no traffic. I repeated again and again: "D-Exyz is holding position short of runway 18!" ... What a nightmare and bad handling to give the instruction to line up after another airplane is cleared on final.

1. I'm glad everyone was all right after these 2, almost runway incursion. 2. Austin airport, at the time, did NOT have Airport Surface Detection System Model-X (ASDE-X). Due to the fog, the tower could NOT visually see that the Southwest airplane had already started to roll BEFORE the Tower said they could start their roll. Although the Tower bears some responsibility, a major contributing factor is that Austin did NOT have ASDE-X. Therefore, it was NOT due to a "DEI" hire as some have wrongly stated in some of the comments below. 3. In April 2024, due to this incident, Austin installed the ASDE-X to help ALL educated and trained professional controllers to help prevent near misses like this in the future.

Southwest pilots seemed to have no situational awareness as well. Knowing a guys on 3 mile final and then taking their sweet ass time to start the roll. And while it is not 100% safe to abort the takeoff above 80 knots and below V1 (you are taught only to do that if safety of continuing the flight is in jeopardy), it’s much safer to do that than cause a risk of a midair collision. It’s good thing that the FedEx pilots knew what they were doing good call on the FO on the go around and I bet they discussed that with each other as soon as the southwest pilot was cleared for takeoff which is good CRM.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this channel seems to have significantly improved over its recent incarnation.

4:28 Those *would've been* the saddest last words ever... "Ahhh... ehm..." before the 727 smashes into their cockpit. When it passes overhead, you hear his balls drop with the way he says "Somebody just took off..." Gives me chills through my spine...

Good thing that first FedX crew was flying the 727! One sexy aircraft!

The "Tulip on the tail" livery United had in the 1990's was perfect. They never should have changed it.

maybe it's an actually common thing but it sounds crazy to me to have the airport operate with no visibility and no ground radar

I know... that what Im about to say.. is SLIGHTLY MORBID.... But Ive always looked at Planes.. as "gifted spirits". We hope you come back. As far as... flying in dense fog, I cant imagine flying a plane and seeing nothing.

Please tell me the flight controller in the first account was fired. On top of being incompetent, her attitude was unprofessional and dangerous.

Holy crap. I’m never flying again.

I was sent to Lambert- St Louis during the controller's strike. Our early evening was usually very busy with TWA landings and Frontier departures. One evening I was working ground control. Due to the wind, we were landing and departing the same runway. The local controller had a L-1011 Heavy on final and cleared a short DC-9 (MD-80??) for immediate takeoff. The Frontier pulled out onto the runway and stopped. By this time the L-1011 was on a mile final. The L-1011 lands with its nose very high, obstructing the pilots view. The L-1011 decides to go around. Finally, the Frontier starts its takeoff roll and rotates. There's only one problem. The standard departures at STL calls for flying runway heading, climbing to 5000. The missed approach instructions are fly runway heading and climb to 2500. When the Frontier rotated it was directly below the L-1011with both planes flying runway heading. It was a beautiful sight though it could've been tragic. The local controller turned the L-1011 to the right and it all worked out ok but I'll never forget seeing those two planes directly under each other.

The decline of TFC. It used to be awesome. I'm still subbed, maybe I'm delusional in thinking a new video will be posted. Oh well, Mentour Pilot uploaded a video today.😊

Reuploads that have lots of errors in them that the originals didn’t have! I love all the distracting mistakes!
@CoastalAutoReactionCAR3 ай бұрын
@@onlyeightfingers I am starting to think that the original developer sold the channel as it probably is quite or was quite profitable, that would explain the rapid endings even on the non-re-uploads the video just stop with no real outro? Along with the errors, etc., that would be my best guess he sold the channel.
@elmalloc3 ай бұрын
@@CoastalAutoReactionCAR Yes they originally hired others who did a VERY bad job. I have to imagine t's money related also, the real person left and only cared about money apparently, leave his audience in the dust. F him for these poor quality videos.

Oh thank you! I was going to ask in the comments if this channel was still just doing reuploads. I think it's been almost a year now? I also see there's still suspicions that the real owner has sold off the channel. Well, with all that in mind, there's no point in staying subscribed anymore. I can't stomach seeing aviation tragedies being turned into someone's ad revenue. How low of them.

That controller in the first segment thought 1448 was at 23r and it's not a runway. How can she assume 1448 was there if it is cloudy and dark? Wow.

Whenever I hear a woman's voice that has anything to do with controlling airplanes I automatically assume there's going to be a monumental clusterfuck to unravel.
