This is so cool. You give the most constructive criticism and feedback, and it's cool that you don't hesitate to suggest exactly what the designer could do differently rather than make them guess what you're thinking. A lot of directors would think that unethical but as a designer it's actually really helpful.

Though it's been said many times before, I can't stress enough how essential the insight this type of video provides. Critiques - by their very nature - can be overwhelming at best, but nothing is worse than leaving an exchange with nothing to take away from it. All too often I find people failing to address what direction to take a project after identifying what doesn't work, creating only a bigger lapse in finding a solution that is better-suited. With each layout you were able to provide connections that read clear and were well explained, which in turn allowed viewers to follow along and learn with Min in the moment. Thank you to you both, would love to see more of these situations moving forward.

Thank you! This was very insightful. I think what sometimes happens is that the art director cannot express what he/she doesn't like and that leaves the designer confused and frustrated. Then the process takes twice the time as nobody really knows what needs to be fixed. The way you suggest how layouts can be improved and why some elements work and others don't, is very clear and makes completely sense. As a designer myself, one tends to look at your own work for too long and you do not see potential issues anymore. Feedback like this is pure gold. More feedback sessions like these will be fantastic. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share your knowledge and turn this in such a learning experience to the rest of the world.
@thefutur6 жыл бұрын
Ronel, I have a theory about those kinds of "art directors", they didn't earn their spot. they were promoted before they learned how to articulate feedback and provide clear direction. everyone seems to covet that title but don't actually know how to do it. we have a bunch more content like this coming down the line.
@ronelvanheerden2466 жыл бұрын
I believe we all can do with a bit more education on feedback and clear direction :) Communication is a fine art very few has mastered. Listening is key but also knowing how your feedback is received (not what you say but what the other person actually hears) is something people should grasp. It takes loads of practice and self correction. And videos like these demonstrates all of this very well. I wish I had access to all this knowledge as a young designer! Well, now I can learn, practice it and teach it to others when the time comes :)

this was awesome Chris. I think what made this video so much better was to have Min actually present at the video (instead of you just critiquing layouts) because (1) it's NOT easy to present your work in front of your boss or professor (2) it shows how you communicate with your co-workers. I even felt that nervousness Min as she was presenting her work, which made it so much more realistic and personal.
