In this video I discuss some silly excuses that I often hear used to justify peoples decision to carry a revolver over a modern semi-automatic handgun.

As a retired LEO I was in a gunfight w/my issued Colt Detective Special .38, similar in size to the S&W, and it saved my butt. These little guns are good fight stoppers and I still carry one in retirement.

In the USN at 18, they had us shoot a few rounds from a .45ACP in 1969. That was my first ever time of holding a firearm other than a shotgun. I did not have another until 20 years later at 38. I had just taken a job as a correctional officer and qualified on my 38th birthday with a .38 Special for perimeter patrol. Obviously, it was designed to be used by illiterate idiots at the turn of the 20th Century. SO, I was able to master it without endangering anyone. That was even though I was forced to learn to shoot right-handed by the environment. It is hard to draw from the door side sitting in a driver's seat. Also, it was easier for me to shift from shooting left-handed with a 12 gauge to shooting right-handed with a sidearm. Personally, even at 70, I am more lethal with my hands by accident than most are deliberately with a firearm. I know at 3 yards in three seconds I can put the first shot through the belly button into the sacrum, the second through the pudendum, and the third shot through the femur or kneecap. A subsonic 158 grain .38 Special can do that, but the power of a .38 Special +P goes up to 548 ft/lbs. That is enough to incapacitate a 263 pound tackle running at 20mph. Personally, I can tell you a gallbladder that is destroyed causes the most pain you can stand without passing out.

Just an FYI 'bullets' are a component of a cartridge or rounds. I carry a revolver because I like the simplicity and reliability. To the ratio of how many gunfights I've been in (0) even five shots are more than I have needed. If it can't be done in five you should've been extricating yourself from the situation to begin with. Adored your Ruger M77/357 vid series. Not real wild about this one. 99% of 'stupid' comes from plain ignorance. That's on both sides of the revolver/self-loader debate.

@@TheGearTester Your name-calling with the use of the term stupidity is off-putting, unnecessary, and really irrelevant. Your argument is filled with holes in practice and theory according to rounds offered and SAAMI specs. I carry a .327, a 357, and a .380 with extra speedloaders/magazines when I go out the door. I carry the .327 everywhere but in the shower. I have no intention of shooting beyond 21 feet and my 100% confidence rate of hitting my target is at 9 feet. I have a service sized Glock 17 as range toy at best.

I'm going to the store, to the doctor, to the movies, to church, to the kids & grandkids, to a restaurant, to the gas station, and places like that. I'm NOT going to war. Already been there, done that, got the T shirt. Nor am I a cop. I carry a revolver in case trouble finds me. If trouble does find me, my Smith and Wesson 442 or my Rock Island Armory m 206 should be more than adequate to handle the situation. The one time I actually NEEDED a gun, merely presenting it (a 6 shot revolver) reminded a gang of tough guys that they had a previous engagement elsewhere. Gauging be their departure speed, I'd say it was Really important and they were running very late. If 5 or 6 rounds aren't sufficient, I need to reevaluate my itinerary.

I make no excuses. I have been carrying a concealed handgun for 45 years since beginning a career in law enforcement in 1973. I have carried S&W J Frames off duty/concealed most of that time. I have all the other types...striker fired, hammer fired, polymer frame, steel frame, aluminum frame, double stack, single stack, M1911s (3), larger revolvers, yada, yada, yada. I currently CHOOSE to carry the S&W M642. I also own and have carried S&W Model 40 and 640. It is in a DeSantis mini scabbard OWB holster attached to my pants. I put my pants on, the gun is on. If I am dressed, I am armed. ALWAYS, EVERYWHERE. I appreciate the light weight and easy concealability. No dingles, no dangles, no trigger blades, no problem with "drop fire". No concern with whether the ammo I choose will "work"...it ALL works. Pull the trigger, it fires. Stop pulling the trigger, it stops firing. I do not carry extra ammo. In 45 years I have never needed a reload. I'll take those odds. I am retired now and live where light clothing is the rule of the day, year round. The Model 642 is a perfect self defense carry gun. I would never be so stupid to say "less rounds makes you more accurate"...practice makes you more accurate. Having been both an LEO and a private armed citizen, I can tell you there is no comparison in the needs and uses for the handgun you carry. As a legally armed civilian you will NOT be making traffic tops at 2 am, answering calls of domestic abuse, serving warrants on drug making labs, and being sent into areas you would never voluntarily enter. For the purposes of a legally armed individual for self defense, the S&W J Frame is an excellent choice...and best of all, it is a choice you will bring with you, ALWAYS, and having a gun is the key to being armed. Leaving your double stack 28 shot wonder 9 at home because it was "too (enter adjective)" makes it far worse as a defense handgun than the S&W J Frame in your pocket. No compromise. No excuses.

I agree! The premise of this video is flawed. I cannot remember anyone stating that less ends MAKES you accurate! That is ridiculous. Let's restate it this way; Having less rnds may influence the carrier of the gun to practice more and THAT may make you more accurate.

How many gunfights require more than what a revolver carries? Is there a report(s) that shows a need for higher capacity pistols to provide adequate protection? If I carry a high capacity pistol is there an presumption of greater safety? I'm aware that more bullets means the potential for more shots, but when the fights over, the bullets remaining in the magazine are irrelevant. I'm not looking for an internet argument, just wanting to reflect aloud on adequate protection in all but the most extreme situation. I have a Glock 26 (10+1) and a 686 Plus (7). I feel no less prepared carrying my S&W.

More bullets in a gun equals more time in the fight. You are incorrect when you say that after a fight is over remaining bullets in a magazine are irrelevant. After fighting to save my life I want as many bullets available to me. The next "Fight" may be just around the corner literally.

There are tons of recorded incidents of people taking 15 or more rounds and kept fighting. Some with 9mm some with 45acp. It happens. There are also incidents where one shot from a 22 or 32 put a man down with a single round. Theres a very broad spectrum. Just carry what ever you'll carry every day. For me its a glock 19. For some its a j frame or lcp.

I absolutely lover Smith and wesson J frame revolvers. can you please do a video of proper sight picture on the j frame. There much debate that the high front blade should not be leveled to the rear gutter sight. When this occurs this lowers the front of the weapon ,causing shots to hit at least 3 to 4 inches below the bulls eye.

I played paintball my childhood and into young adult hood. It went from pump action only with 10 to 15 rd feed sticks, to semi auto with 200 round hoppers and eventually electronics made it so those 200 paintballs can be fed and fired at 15 to 30 shots per second.. even with people having 190 more shots, and rate of fire 15x more then me, using a pump action I still do very well, often dominating games... how? Well superior firepower does help, all it takes in paintball is 1 shot. I usually hit people in their mask (as they look out to shoot, and to prevent wiping off paint as easily) .. tldr even vastly outgunned I dominated thru better technique, and more well placed shots. Others relied on "spray and pray" tactics, while I made every shot count. I follow active self protection, and 3 days ago a former argentine soldier defended himself from car jacking with 5 shot j frame vs armed car jackers (2 jackers +1 getaway driver) he hit 2. Killed the 1 with a gun going for his wife in car forcing all 3 to flee or perish... another case a CCW in LA gets attempted robbed by two muggers, and the ccw guy throws his tea in the guys face and draws his glock 26.. he fired off 8 of his 10 rounds, hit no one, and they fled.. both successfully defended themself. But one made sure at least 1 robber will never come back to rob him or anyone again. When you have 5, or 6, or 8 etc in a revolver you tend to train with it and make sure to make the shots count.

J frames are great guns. I wish people would stop attempting to justify their life choices. Pretend you are Rambo and carry 12 guns everywhere. Pretend revolvers are better fighting tools than semi-autos and lie to yourself. An auto of the same capacity is a superior fighting tool, just get over it. I still carry a J frame. So what? It's sad this guy has to waste his time on common sense.

It ain’t the arrow it’s the Indian. J-Frame pocket carry ALLDAY LONG for civilian self defense. If you need more than this your probably making bad life choices or you’ve got a HELL of a dangerous civil job Situational awareness is king and, is key to any and all success an individual will ever have in terms of self-defense .... If you are not paying attention to your surroundings enough to know you need to stick your hand in your pocket .... WELL; most likely, having a 9 mm pistol (or a hydrogen bomb for that matter) in the supper uber tactical cool stone cold killer appendix carry position or any other position, simply in and of itself isn’t going to save you .... All you’re going to be doing is rolling around on the ground fighting over a pistol with a 5 1/2 pound trigger, thats pointed at your abdomen and not to the outside of you leg (in other words, in your front pocket) ..... Your highly likely to get shot by your own weapon .... Anyone can get caught flatfooted (unaware) .... We all live in the real world and crazy unexpected things happen all the time; However, ESPECIALLY if I get caught off guard I’d still MUCH rather be fighting over a revolver in my pocket with a 12+ pound trigger that I can easily fire from my pocket (and in general pointed away from me in my front pocket), with very little chance of causing a malfunction .... As well as making contact shouts; again, with an extremely low chance of malfunctions occurring .... No weapon will save you if your wondering around in another world and don’t pay attention to what’s going on around you .... Unless your a soldier or a police officer, 90 to nothing all this stuff is going to happen at extremely close distances (arms reach) .... Look at the Tuller drill .... Then imagine someone literally 2 to 3 feet away from you .... Asking you for the time, bumming money, asking for a cigarette ect. .... If that person has ill intentions; well, how long do you think it will take them(effectively right on top of you) to start attacking you .... You’d probably be better off having at least one hand up so you could cover your head and not get knocked unconscious right out the gate .... It’s likely you’ll be dodging incoming blows from the start .... Their is very little realistic thought put into a lot of this modern day “CCW Training” .... What do most people do in situations like that .... Instantly start screaming at top of their lungs, at the incoming person (potential bad guy) “STOP RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE, IVE SEEN THE 21’ TULLER DRILL AND YOUR GETTING TO ENTIRELY TO DAM CLOSE TO ME, AND A MANS GOTA KNOW HIS LIMITATIONS; YEA YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THAT MEANS SCUMBAG” .... No, because most people aren’t and don’t want to look crazy .... This kind of human interaction happens all the time (WITH ABSOLUTELY NO BAD OUTCOME) .... It hard to rob, assault, abduct or rape someone from 25 yards away .... Only because you need to be able to beat them (meaning your at physical contact distance) or, have them hand you their wallet (effectively touching each other) or, get in the big white rapist van with out causing a MAJOR seen .... NO one could convince me PERIOD, that any other CCW carry weapon (carried in any configuration), could possibly beat a pocket size carry revolver carried in the front pocket (for civilian use) could be gotten into action quicker or, is SAFER especially for the person defending themselves .... Especially if they’ve been caught of guard (if your fighting over your weapon) .... Theirs absolutely a place in the CCW world for Glock 19’s .... I carry one .... When I’m going to a place where their are big crowds and, possibly more that just 3 crazy violent people that want my wallet and the enjoyment of beating me into a mild comma .... And in an environment where I’m likely to have a larger starting engagement distance (under those conditions I carry both) .... But just day to day, S&W 640 Pro concealed hammer .357 loaded with .39 special POCKET CARRY

There are reasons to prefer a revolver over a semiautomatic (such as a lesser of a chance of shooting your nuts off / no chance of a chambering error, etc,) but this choice is a personal preference really . A J frame revolver, especially in inexperienced hands, is less accurate than the average semiautomatic, so that reason (if someone actually stated as much) seems bogus.

@Cecil Pearson Studios "Better" is subjective. How does having a bucket of rounds in a magazine make it "Better" if the user can't get hits on target with it, or can't operate the slide to chamber a round? I own both revolvers and semiautos, and like Both, but I'm More Accurate with a revolver. This isn't CoD, I'm not an LEO, and I'm not in Combat, so the chances of me needing any more than the 5 or 6 I've got are pretty slim. For reasons unknown to me, in watching others, the first shot seems to be the best shot. If you read "An Alternate Look at Handgun Stopping Power" you will find the 9mm was out performed overall by most firearms, except in the category of percentage of people not incapacitated where it is midrange; purely by virtue of firing more rounds. EVERY round you fire you are responsible for. I would say the 9mm is the reason 70-80% of shots fired by police are misses. Of course, the FBI used the miss rate to justify 9mm because it has the greatest capacity. You be the judge about which came first on that.

The problem with over-emphasizing a high-capacity firearm is it can encourage you to buy a gun that’s too big and bulky to actually carry all the time, including at home, taking out the trash at night, letting the dog out to pee, etc. If you’re a private citizen, living a quiet life, not pissing people off and accumulating enemies who want to harm you at any cost, your biggest risk is being the victim of a crime of opportunity, where the bad guys see you as low risk, easy payoff. In that case, any reliable gun you have in hand and are prepared to use changes that equation, regardless of caliber or ammo capacity. Even multiple bad guys aren’t going to hang around and get shot at if they don’t have much emotional investment in making *you-gotta be you* their victim. And in the rare case that you actually do have to pull the trigger, it’s almost always 1-3 shots. So take the gun that gives you 100% coverage of 90%+ of the situations you’re ever likely to face, vs. that really awesome gun you wind up leaving in a drawer somewhere.
