The ABSOLUTE BEST way to retract electric brake calipers. Today i"m working on a 2015 VW R with an ELECTRONIC E-BRAKE, i'm going to show you how to push the piston back in to replace your rear brake pads, this is the fastest and easiest way to do it.

Hektor , iv been watching a few guys doing the rear calipers with electronic hand breaks , REALLY at the end of the day there was nothing wrong with the old handbreak cable system , SO you are the fourth guy iv watched doing this job , lost an hour , but gained a lot of knowledge so I'll be more confident doing my rear brakes on my engine driven Tin Can . Each guy approached this job from a different perspective but all in all got the job done and NO need for an expensive garage bill , Stay Safe Hektor , Stan up in Edinburgh Scotland UK .

Just before watching yours, I watched one that required manipulating the car computer with some complicated gizzmo before changing the rear pads. Afterward, I said, this ain't for me! Then and there I realized I was going to have to let the dealer put me in the poor house on this one. Then out of the dark sky came a bright light ... YOU!! ...🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Thank You Homie.

You should actually use OBDII software to release the parking brake(VCDS or smh), because after replacement you need to adapt your parking brake motors so they know the distance between the rotor and your new brake pads. 9 times out of 10 nothing bad will happen, but there is always that 1 time when you f*ck up your brakes, they overheat, and you end up with a costly mess :)

@Halibrand

These brake calipers will relearn their position and calibrate themself when you push the park brake button. However the older style brake calipers on VW's and Audi's need their position to be set with VAGcom or another diag tool, you have to put the new brake pad thickness in and also do a calibration with the software. If not done properly there is usaly a permanent fault code set regarding power loss or torque fault, And the only way to erase it is by coding in vcds and doing adaptations in a certain way, however i have found that its 50/50 it will work or not, sometimes the calipers wont accept it and needs replacing. A couple of years ago i had atleast one car a week towed to my shop with this problem, ive lost count on how many calipers ive replaced but it must be in the 50-80s. Its not fun when the calipers cost 400$ each + labour cost. Same thing goes with newer Volvos and Ford Mondeos with electric p brake, i have replaced 20 calipers on them to becouse of people jumping them.

Thank you for this! Just did this for my friend's audi, retracted it no problem. I guess a dumb question. If you retract it all the way how does the car know to extend it so that it touches the rotor now? Would you have to go the opposite way just a little so that it makes contact with the rotor? IE: How does pumping the brake affect the actual motorized parking brake? Sorry if that's a silly question, i just want to make sure I understand.
@bwdz75
@bwdz75 3 жыл бұрын
You should have also set the caliper with the notches correctly so it engages the dimple on the back of the pad. Anyone that does this, do it at your own risk as without using a diag tool that can put the brake in service mode you may not be able to get it to work right after for a variety of issues that take too long to explain just be warned of how many people have done this and ended up having to replace the calipers and recode with VCDS

Of your doing this without air/impact tools.... after removing the lug stud caps loosen the lug studs with a breaker bar. Only a few turns to break the torque. If you forget this step it will probably be the only time. The wheel will spin but lugstud won’t loosen. Remember most European vehicles......the lugnut is not a lug nut. They use Lug Stids in that the support weight of the stud is attached to the nut. Simple summary....lift the car up only as far as necessary to get weight off the tire. Leave the two upper lug studs for last so you have something to support the weight of the tire. They also make Tire Trees for European vehicles for a few bucks on Amazon. This threads in the stud opening and can support the weight of the tire for a few seconds until the regular lugstud gets threaded. As you get the adjacent lugstud installed remove the tire tree and will make tire removal/installation so much easier....especially when doing yourself.

So retracting is only needed when you’re about to replace brake pads? Not necessary if you’re going to inspecting brake pads or maybe only to clean and lube guide pins?
