What’s sick is that Kim Jung Un grew up in Switzerland, so he knows very well what a normal life is like. He doesn’t allow his citizens ANY access to the internet, literature, or travel, so they have no clue what the real world is. They likely think starving to death in the name of sticking it to America is honorable. I hope so much to see the North Korean people free and truly thriving in my lifetime.

It's because if Kim Jong Un showed people what the outside world was like,people would revolt,even his soldiers.His soldiers suffer to,so if he were to be like "Yo guys,btw,the outside world is actually millions of times better then here where you actually have food and internet",everyone's bolting for it. We had the opportunity to visit in 2017. As americans we were only allowed 4 days and my special operations background caused some consternation. It was alot like the Truman show, it's like everything we saw in Pyongyang was staged for our tour group. I learned quickly to shut my mouth and really open my eyes, our guides were nice and very generous also. The only real glimpses we saw of actual NK life was when we drove to the demilitarized zone and saw real North Koreans living their every day lives, but we only saw glimpses at 65 mph on the roads. My experience did teach me that citizens of the DRPK are curious kind honest God fearing people, I wouldve love to meet more of them. It was a unique trip, that took many weeks to unpack and unzip in my own head.

The name Hermit Kingdom includes the entire Korean peninsula, not only North Korea. It's a term that comes from Korea (before becoming divided into two countries) trying to isolate themselves from the world after seeing how European imperialists were trying to colonize East Asia (ie. British colonizing China). The name doesn't refer to North Korea's policies.
@orangvii3633

the term hermit kingdom is a general term for isolated countries. I have heard it used to describe the UK and Japan. Also didn't the start of Joseon's isolation happen before every colonial power tried to go all in on asia?
