I personally was excited when I saw the title of the video, as this is one of my most favorite folk tales. I grew up with the Russian version of it, and as so I want to add a few corrections- In the Russian story, the narration opens up with stating that the fisherman and his wife weren't just poor, but the bath they used for washing clothes was broken. After the fisherman caught the fish, which was described as a gold fish btw, the very first thing his wife asked him to wish for was to fix the broken bath. It only after the bath got fixed when the wife wants the fisherman to ask for a better house and better living conditions, as the bath was sort of "test of the gold fish's wish granting powers". And it's quite of an important detail too, as this bath is pretty symbolic in the Russian version, because when everything the wife wished for was taken away from her in the end of the tale, the narration of the tale closed down on the fisherman coming back to his original 'piss-poor' hat to see his wife crying over the bath, which is broken again. The bath is basically a symbol of the closed cycle in the story, not just as the wife not being satisficed with her living conditions, but also that a simple fix to a somewhat big, yet still minor inconvenience to her such as the broken down bath wasn't enough to make her happy. Another interesting detail in the Russian version is that when the fisherman's wife asked to be a god, she aske to be very specifically to be the queen of the sea. This detail is quite important because when the wife wished for it, she didn't just want to rule over the sea, with the wish granting gold fish being one of her subjects, she actually wanted to become a wish granting deity by herself, basically getting all gold fish's powers to herself, alongside being an almighty sea queen. And just like the broken bath from the beginning of the story, this is a small but significant detail, that shows that the wife is so greedy for more power and money, that the only thing that can satisfy her materialistic thirst is for her to literally become the vey same deity that granted her wished to begin with. The wife basically didn't want power over people, she wanted power over over the mystical force made her wishes come true, and ultimately being able to grand her own wishes true by herself. And this is an especially interesting detail to note, as after wishing of basically being a wish granting deity, everything was taken back away from her, including her ability to do basic household chores. The wife couldn't do not only magic stuff, but also basic mortal's house work too, which was the very same thing that started her whole "quest for more power" to begin with. The wife started with no ability to wash her cloths clean, wished her way up to have powers similar to that of God, only to end up not being able to wash her cloths clean, which was always her one and only "true" wish. Again, those are pretty minor details and aren't as interesting as the detail that Jon did include in the video with the wife not being able to recognize her own husband anymore, but I think they do add up a lot to the messed up part of the Russian version of this tale.

@@emanueltorres894 Oh, I really love the story of King Midas too! It's a pretty tragic tale if to be honest, and I love how it's hidden moral is that you can never appreciate what you have till you lose it (in reference to King Midas accidentally killing his own daughter with his golden touch). The fisherman's story is interesting as it has an opposite moral to the King Midas tale, as it's moral is about not appreciating the gifts you are given, and thinking nothing of them, well, till you lose all of them. King Midas teaches us to appreciate the things we already own even if they aren't as expensive or as valuable as we may think of them, the fisherman's wife teaches us to to be grateful toward all the help we are given from others (especially when it's given charge free in good faith), and not ask for too much help or too many things from the people who helped us when we were in need.

I would’ve liked it if the wife would’ve turned into a speaking fish as well. You know: giving her the ability to do anything,... if somebody asks her for it, kinda making her some sort of god, as she asked for. That way she would taking the prince fishes place. That way the story would imply that the fish prince had the same thing happen to him and it all is some sort of cycle
@viktoria_pikovsky3 жыл бұрын
This is kinda what happened in the Russian version of the tale, actually. The last wish the wife asked for is to become the queen of the sea, and either have the fish prince as her subject, or having wish granting powers herself. It's not quite the same with her becoming the fish prince (princess?) herself, but it is close enough in the idea that she did want to be a sea royalty, probably becoming a fish or mermaid too along the way, while also having the power to grand wishes just as the original fish prince.
@albatross16883 жыл бұрын
@@viktoria_pikovsky Really? Because, if that wish really was granted, and she was permanently stuck as a wish-granting fish, that would have interesting implications regarding the fish prince himself.
@viktoria_pikovsky3 жыл бұрын
@@albatross1688 The wish was not granted unfortunately, but the wife really did ask for it. The idea was that she wanted to rule over everything, land and sea, so the fish got pissed off that the wife basically wanted to be a magical fish like itself. And yeah, it would have been a great teaching moment if that's what ended happening, with the wife becoming a fish herself, but it seems the Russian folk tellers thought it would have been too much of giving the wife what she wanted the most, and decided it would be better to end the tale with simply taking everything that was given to her away from her.
@albatross16883 жыл бұрын
@@viktoria_pikovsky To be fair, with all these stories sharing a lot of similarities, they're probably all based on the same one that changed slightly here and there as it was told and retold across different regions over the generations. So, it probably wasn't a simple choice on the part of the Russian folk tellers, even though that would have made for an interesting twist ending.
@albatross16883 жыл бұрын
@YaYa Indeed. Heck, maybe the Prince wouldn't have been freed, and there are multiple wish-granting fish out there, who all have the power to grant any wish, except their own. Thus, they are stuck as fish for the rest of their days. Another implication would be that it wouldn't be the fish himself punishing the wife. Technically, he would simply be granting her what she asked for.

So it undid the first 2 wishes, however, since the wishes were squandered, and had to be undone, the final wish would be very small. What they really wanted was a son. That's why Tom was so tiny.

You’re a fantastic example of the young people we need today. Like, right now today. The evolution of your channel is amazing. From fantasy to fiction to folklore your mind appears fixed on sleuthing out hidden truths. So when are you running for office?

I hope to see messed up origins of Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone, 101 Dalmatians and Who Framed Roger Rabbit (since that film is based on a dark mystery book called "Who Censored Roger Rabbit"

That's my favorite Grimm fairytale. My grandpa always told me that in low German. 😆 "Buttje, Buttje in de See. Meene Fru de Isebell mook net so we kick it wel!"

"You'll be cursed with Cheeto fingers for a thousand years." As stupid/silly as it sounds, that's actually terrifying.

I was told that story when I was little but in my culture we have a shrimp and the guy says (in Spanish) “Camaroncito duro, sacame del apuro.” It is exactly the same story line but we also use it to teach the kids they should know when to say know just like the fisherman should have told his wife no when she got unreasonable. 😊
@DrDolan2000 Жыл бұрын
Nope. I'm not even familiar with this one. It's kind of sad; bro married the wrong broad and then he pays for it Should've wished for a better wife

i think the grimm version also subtly teaches a lesson about the behavior of the fisherman. despit his poverty, he was reluctant to make any of his own wishes... instead, his wife takes the initiative. the first wish wasn't a problem, but as she continues to wish, she gets more and more extravagant and tyrannical... and her husband basically enables her, refusing to address the issue. my personal interpretation is that this story speaks about our individual responabilities to society. if he had been more assertive about his needs (like a house), and if he had been more assertive with his wife and her wishes, they wouldn't have ended up back in the piss pot... she became more extravant and unhinged as the story develops, but her husband refuses to stand up to her. in this situation, he merely could have said no. he has control over his body, and needed simply not to comply. i see it as a story about power and passivity. because the fishman was a humble, good man, who thought he was being a good husband, he passively went along with everything his wife wanted... and she always wanted more... just like every dictator in history. i think the part about the climate change over the course of the story is interesting. in 1812, the industrial revolution was gaining ground. some products were being mass produced, using up resources and poluting the environment. i wonder if there might have already been concernes about that then.

14:00 That sort of sounds like the first reverse mortgage. In New York City a elderly widow owned house outright but was need of money. She had a young male friend who had money but wanted the house. Instead of buying her house he worked out a deal with her. He would pay her a certain amount of money each month and when she died he would get the house. She ended up living another 30 years and, in fact, outlived the young man. Considering that, it's surprising that reverse mortgage ever became a thing.

Ive actually heard the stone cutter story before but the version I heard was about a mouse looking mouse 🐁 looking for a wife so he keeps asking forces of nature for their daughters hand till he gets to a castle 🏰 the castle then says to him the only thing that can get past me is a mouse, upon which he then marries a female of his own species.

A problem with the lessons is that it also teaches people to stay in their own place. Keeping a hierarchical structure no matter if its actually good or not

In German I know it as "Mann und Frau im Essigkrug" - Husband and Wife in a vinegar pot" and I loved it. But the title Fisherman and Wife is known too, so much so that I knew instantly what story you were going for.
