Thanks for watching, SoloFam! (☞゚ヮ゚)☞ Hope you liked this episode. While incredibly sad I thought it was fascinating how different Medusa was in the original myth. There's even MORE interesting lore about the gorgon species that I plan on getting into in a separate video when we start exploring mythological creatures! In the meantime I'd love for you to comment your thoughts on this episode and any suggestions you have for future videos! I've already got a LOT of ideas written down but Greco-Roman mythology alone is so expansive that the more directions you can point me in the better. I don't want to miss anything interesting as we progress through the series! Peace and love yous.

Medusa was just born a monster in the original. In the version that Jon Solo talks about, its all veriations of a story writen by some guy who only wrote it to make the gods look bad. I mean, does it really make sense that the virgin goddess of wisdom would be portrayed as cursing an innocent victim? Even though misunderstandings happen in real life, such a misunderstanding wouldn't happen to the goddess of wisdom for thematic reasons, unless there's some thematic significance to it happening, which there was since the guy who wrote it just wanted to portray Athena as unjust.

Ah. I wasn't aware that one where she was born a gorgon came before the other myth. But I think there is a possibility that there could have been two Medusas and not necessarily that Ovid watered down the original myth (though knowing Greeks, it's most likely that he did change it)
@tydahl2819
@tydahl2819 4 жыл бұрын
When I grew up learning Greek/Roman mythology, the myth I heard about Medusa was that she was, as you said, a beautiful girl and was an only child (ish). She had grown into the most beautiful woman in the land and caught the eye of a man that Aphrodite had her mind set on. Seeing that the man was going to choose Medusa over her, the *goddess* of beauty, love, and affection, Aphrodite was sent into a rage and cursed Medusa to never be able to look at anyone without them turning into stone. Over time, this turned Medusa into a hateful and angry person, unable to cope with being the one person on the planet completely incapable of finding someone to love, which twisted her features into that of the mythological beast we all know and love. Enter the Gorgon sisters. They had spent most of their life living by themselves and caring only for each other, but saw Medusa, someone they assumed to have suffered much the same way they had (i.e. being tricked or cursed by the gods when they were young and having to live the horrible life of being a Gorgon) and took her under their wing, where she became the horrible thing we've always heard of.
@cicibrown5979
@cicibrown5979 4 жыл бұрын
I was taught something similar. Though I think my teacher said it was because she was a priestess of Aphrodite and seduced one of Aphrodite's lovers on the goddess' altar. Never heard the other part about being taken in by the gorgon sisters. in fact, though I knew she was a gorgon, I hadn't heard of them till now.

This makes much more sense. The story he was talking about was writen by a man who only wanted to cast the gods as unreasonable, unjust tyrants, so he chose the most wise and levelheaded god, Athena, and wrote her cursing an innocent woman. But Aphrodite has a long history of jealousy, and also a long history of causing problems. It's completely contradictory to Greek mythology to have Athena curse Medusa, but for Aphrodite to have done it would've made perfect sense XD That said, from what I've read, it seems the original has her born as a Gorgon, just like her sisters. I know about the verson tuched on in this video, but I don't know about the version you talked about. It makes sense with how most of Greek mythology characterizes Athena, so it could be a genuine variation. It could also be an attempt to teach Athena's story to people without including the assault. In any case, I like that version better than the one in the video

The gods are exaggerations of every trait that can be ascribed to humanity, including pettiness and jealousy. I find a pantheon easier to understand in those terms than a single, omniscient, omnipotent entity, though I can see where that perspective has its place too. Mythologies are a culture's attempt to explain the universe as it is and as we hope to make it, and if we view it that way it's much easier to see that they all relate to the real world just as much as they all relate to fiction and fantasy and imagination.

@@andromedamarch4943 Yeah,Medusa was always a monster and her and Athena had no interaction,besides when Athena sent Perseus to kill Medusa. And Medusa was never raped. I’m kinda upset by how people are believing this version,that was written by Ovid a Roman poet who was born centuries after people were already worshipping Greek goddesses and gods. He also hated Athena,that whole “Medusa was raped”,story is what we like to call in gen z,fan fiction. But Ovid just wasn’t a fan.

The version Jon Solo just told was historically incorrect too. It was writen by some guy who wanted to portray the Gods as unjust tyrants. Doesn't it seem odd that the Goddess of Wisdom would curse an innocent woman for bing a victim? That's not the original story. In the original, Medusa was born a Gorgon just like her sisters. I've also heard another possible story where Aphrodite was jealous and cursed Medusa, but I'm pretty sure that was a less widespread variation even back then.

Some people believe that Athena made medusa a Gorgon to protect her, since she saw Poseidon rape medusa she wanted to make sure she could stand up for herself and turned her into a gorgon so that no man could do anything to her again.. I prefer this ^ version bc I think Athena would do anything for her maidens- I also kinda feel like she was (maybe?) honoring medusa by putting her head on a shield, Greek mythology is weird enough for this to work 🤷‍♀️

You also have to consider how she reacted to Arachne's thread spinning competition. She turned a woman into a spider because she was critical of the god's during a competition (read up Arachne for more info.). Criticism which was accurate with the way she portrayed the gods being hedonistic, spiteful and overall not the perfect beings they claimed themselves to be. So, honestly, I'd believe the story that Athena watched Medusa getting ***** and didn't do anything on purpose to be more likely rather than some misunderstanding or her idea of protecting Medusa. B**** be spiteful and jealous even to her followers.

i knew a different version when I was younger. From what I remember, Medusa would always compliment herself for being very beautiful. She would look in the mirror and praise herself all the time. Idk when Athena came into the picture, but when she did, it was shown that she has had enough with Medusa after hearing her say she was “more beautiful than the goddesses” and as revenge, turned her into the hideous monster she is today. Not as sad, though I guess it paints a different version of Medusa.

@@Paulafan5 One should consider that that is just one version of the myth, and one of the later ones at that. It also can be largely tracked down to one poet in particular, Ovid, which begs the question if this was simply his own interpritation. The way Athena appears in the story of Medusa and Arachne, were she punishes them unjustly, actually seems rather out-of-character when you look at how Athena was typically portrayed, being shown as very emotional and unsympathetic, when she was otherwise depicted as being very pragmatic, calm, and rational.
