Mike was a such great guy, we were friends for many years. My company Consult Software and Consult Computer Systems, wrote Dark Sceptre and Throne of Fire for Mike, working with Melbourne House and Dominic Wheatley. DS came first, then came TOF. Mike asked me for advice on starting a software development company, and it was a few years later that he opened Maelstrom Games. We lost touch for a while, and then I heard he had passed. Thanks for the great times Mike.

Lords of Midnight and Manic Miner are for me the best 80s computer games and both the babies of Wirral men.

Very nice video...I would just add mention of "Quake Minus 1", a great, overlooked action/strategy game for C64. Almost no one remember it, but I think it is one of the best ever developed for that platform

Really enjoyed this history. Mike S was one of my all time fave programmers, spent many sleepless nights as a kid playing Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's Revenge. In fact 35 years later I still find I am playing on them either through an emulator or the windows port created by Chris Wilde. The ZX Spectrum is my most fondly remember home computer, especially the Midnight games, and it baffles me how they were not heralded as the most advanced games of the day, 4000 locations with about 32,000 panoramic views, not to mention all the characters and strategy going on in the background, and all in 48k. Thanks for this video, Mike Singleton was a genius. And even you pronouncing Dark Sceptre as Dark Spectre throughout didn't lessen my enjoyment of watching.

Lords of the midnight is a master piece in the computer history. I remember on those dates, people were playing hours and hours without moving in front of the computer. After decades I found it on the apple store and I bought it because of the respect of the developer or may be the sake of those dates. He created thousands of screen in 48K memory. His landscaping technic is also remarkable innovation in the gaming world. RIP Mike

dude tell me about it. As a kid it was the only thing that made me go to bed late at 3:00 am. It was nail biting stuff was Lords of Midnight. I was C64 so we go the games later but still amaziing for their time.

Sad thing is that Mike Singleton was a pioneer and now long at the few comments below. Very sad indeed. Top 10 game designers of all time I think

did you know Dark Scepter was orignally ment to be set in the same universe as the Dark Crystal hence the same font as the movie posters used
