People who can't play good neighbor are so frustrating cause it's usually the losing strat in so many situations. Happened to me just yesterday in a game where we both locked down Africa-SA early, but he kept breaking me, so I had to focus on him while the eventual winner just sat on Australia building a massive army.
@aaronjosephs2560 Жыл бұрын
Any time the australia player wins, you know someone else must have played poorly 😂
@davidlessenberry8736 Жыл бұрын
@@aaronjosephs2560 In the boardgame, Australia is more solid. You typically play with 3-4 players, not 6. You place manually, not randomly. As such, SA and Aus are significantly better. When you play with the boardgame with the typical rules for most of the game's history, it's always classic map, progressive cards, true random dice, and manual placement. Unlike the computer version, everyone is interested in Asia and Australia, because the NA player might actually hold Asia for a turn or two with 3-4 players. I have seen some major stalemates when playing the boardgame, but they were nothing like the BS we routinely see online. The longest Risk game I have ever played over the board was @ 4 hours. You have to consider we were much slower, since we actually rolled the dice and subtracted the troops by hand. People actually concede in a FtF Risk game, also. There's no placement or ranking, so who cares? My point is that some people might actually overemphasize Australia online, because it is much more important in the physical boardgame. Probably not true, but hey....

Indeed. And if you wanna use your advantage over Pete in Purples place you go full ham on him but if you stack interior thats out of the window. But Pete also made a little mistake there. 24:59 Instead of moving the 25 from Congo to Ukraine he should ve moved the 20 out of SA. That gave the wrong signal to Blue that Pete is greedy and wants 3 continents. Sure, giving how poorly Purple played, i doubt it he would ve just taken SA but its the correct move in this position.
@connorallgood0922 Жыл бұрын
Hey pete, I just want to add my opinion on blue adding troops to your border at 13:10, keep in mind this is before seeing what he does on this turn so IDK if he breaks or not, but my mind goes to the fact that he might fear other people hitting through your 2 stack then the 1s to break his bonus, such as the orange 17 stack.
@davidlessenberry8736 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, when your neighbor plays the "threat guard" tactic, it puts you in an awkward position. The "threat guard" stack makes it easier for them to kill YOU later, yet there is no mutual defense on some of the "hot spots." I may be a stupid noob and bad player, but I don't like leaving Greenland wide open, just to make the "stack in the Ukraine player" happy, just for example. I have played this game for over 40 years (FtF), and there is no way in @#$% that I have played as many games as Pete, Kylted, or Digitallic. However, my point is that there are different VALID approaches and tactics of how to play this game. All of the early versions of the boardgame used progressive cards, just for example.

As someone who has played this game for most of my life FtF over a board, the online timer changes player behavior. You don't tend to break people just because you can, or even over attack, when you know you are sitting down for a three-hour (or more) boardgame. You screw up early, and you are sitting around the table kibbitzing, while watching everyone else have a good time. (Granted, this was also before people would just sit and screw around on their cellphones for hours.) In a FtF game, people tend to play much slower, more methodically, and more predictably. OTOH, they also get better much faster, because of the time investment.

@blackbird351 Жыл бұрын
My interpretation of purple's mindset while he was stacking troops on Greenland is that he simply wants an idle 3-point guard. He's not necessarily planning to break you. What I don't understand about Pete's play in this video is, why match his stack 8v8? If he decides to break you, he first gets to bolster his side of that cold war by a whole turn's worth of troops (minimum 8 while he's holding NA). That means you're really just sacrificing 8 troops to his 16 minimum. The idea I've seen work more consistently is, in this particular case of EU vs an NA player who splits their guard across 2 or 3 access points, I have a single big stack in Ukraine. That way, should Greenland hit Iceland, I have a big punching stack to run around the board with and hit him through Alaska, which will always succeed because he's splitting his forces 2 or 3 ways. This minimises the attacker's advantage for the opponent and maximises it for yourself, assuming he doesn't run his Greenland stack through Europe and slams it into Ukraine (which noobs who go bad neighbour like that _never_ do). For nuance's sake, perhaps you could leave something like a 3 or a 4 there, just to disincentivise him from mindlessly hitting Iceland for a cheap card.
@blackbird351 Жыл бұрын
I would also say that the kill on Red, while potentially the correct mechanical play given the good-neighbour meta game state, was incorrect given Purple's clear lack of game sense. The read on Purple should've _always_ been that he'd break everything you have once he saw you had 3 continents. There are dozens of reasons for a noob to not just stop at breaking one bonus, and practically none to the contrary.
@MrFredstt3 ай бұрын
@@blackbird351Quick question- what makes a noob immediately break everything you have in this situation?
@blackbird3513 ай бұрын
@@MrFredstt The mindset that once you break someone once, you've declared war on them and are expecting them to hit back, so therefore you should let them generate as little as possible. It's a skill to understand that the person you're breaking might not immediately decide you're the enemy if you leave them with enough generation, and just take enough to balance the scales.

It's more of a matter of degree. If you give your neighbour no reason not to kill you and kill themselves then you give the game to the third guy.
@glennriter5965 Жыл бұрын
You're completely misunderstanding the thought process behind putting a troop or two on a choke point per turn. When it's a minority of the draft but steady, and it's on choke points, it's creating a defensive choke. If someone breaks you (which with your playstyle is typically and deliberately easy) they don't have to worry as much about also being broken, for instance. And yes you're right that they really may turn it into an attack at some point; but that's always a risk, in risk. And as you so kindly demonstrated to red very soon after providing an incomplete description of why a person would regularly place an army or two on each of their borders - not deliberately placing troops on the borders in advance of an attack won't stop an attack. You wiped out the ally you could finish first - The one that made it easy for you. The one who didn't defend against you. I really think that the reason purple bothered you so much is because purple didn't make it easy to kill him. Green came in clutch to ensure you took the W; but that's because Green was a truly terrible player.
