I'm 5'9" and was super proud when i was 18 and could dunk. Now, 30 years later and 30 kilo's later, I can't even touch the ring. I am going to lose 20 kilos in the new year and give this a try to see if I can get back to dunking.

This Derrick Rose talk really resonated with me - I always jumped only with my left leg and it was totally more dominant leg for me. Last year I got an ACL tear and it was in my right knee! My surgery was 10 months ago and I am still not fully recovered. I still feel some pain in my knee. I started incorporating some of your exercises few days ago in my workouts and hope they will help me with eliminating knee pain and help me fully recover. I even ordered your book yesterday so hope that will help too. I have set myself a goal to get back to fully playing basketball in February and maybe with exercises from this video even dunking in few months.

Thats a part of the reason why he is so limited and one dimensional. He NEEDS a full head of steam to get his max vert, which does not really make sense for PRACTICAL basketball. Think about it, have you ever seen him do anything CLOSE to a standing vert, nope. Because using ALL possible plants actually takes more skill and true athletic ability.

There was a game we used to play as kids (around 6-13 years old) called Chinese Jump Rope and we would jump in patterns in rhythm to a chant and the garter would get higher and higher. Incidentally, the ones that played the game well also were the best spikers and blockers; beating the everyone in an inter-grade competition (including high school varsity teams). They had massive heel kick height with such a small gather. These sub-5 feet 10-12 year old guys and girls getting their heads above the net was a sight to see. They also had the best defensive timings in basketball on rotations. Just wish the country had the infrastructure to support and cultivate athletes to compete at a world level.

Great video! Even though you mentioned just using this for basketball players for dunking, I could see this being very valuable for volleyball players as well. Maybe not dunking specifically but rim touches or something. Volleyball is just as bad about only jumping one way all of the time so I have my people do reverse push-punch to try and help with that balance, but often times you inadvertently end up landing in weird positions when playing. There's definitely more we can use from this video!

Awesome. This video like your others doesn’t disappoint. There’s so much info out there on what to do, but because I’m totally bought in to the knees over toes concept, going all in on this seems like the best bet. Get this: In just about a month or so watching some of your videos, I’ve added the tibia flex, Nordic negatives, hip flexor (leg raise), Patrick step ups, and some different plant jump exercises... Almost 2 inches in a month, seriously. Which for 6’1, 35 year old me means grabbing the rim with one hand easily (LR or RL) enough to hang and pull myself up.. A few more inches and I’ll be there...I was measuring at about a 27” inch vertical with a 7’10” reach (barefoot), but it seems pointless to keep measuring, as I honestly feel like I’m going to blow right through my goal, seeing as how I’m developing so many muscle and tendon groups for the first time...it’s been quite a discovery. I mean, I can barely do 35 leg raises at body weight and my hip flexors are on fire. In a month I can see and feel the size they’ve gained, I can *feel* the extra power, spring, bounce, and security in them and in my knees. I’m playing more times per week and having zero of my previous shin splints. Thanks a million times...it’s only a matter of time before you catch fire in the mainstream. 👍🔥

First off, your videos are great! I'm currently 44 and no longer a dunker. Had a decent high jump back in the day and was a solid one foot dunker. Never once did I consider a heal kick something that may help. I'm sure it happened, but it must have been naturally. Itching to get my vert back but realistically just a basic legit dunk would feel good.

I definitely have the imbalance between quads. Naturally a left legged jumper. I taught myself how to finish adequately off my right leg even dunk in my younger days, but my right leg never caught up with my left leg in terms of strength. The Tendons are definitely weaker. I will be applying this to even out my leg strength.

Love your content! For volleyball, do you still suggest doing balance? Would it be better to ignore our typical approach in an attempt to get balance as most right handed players typically jump RL and land left or with two feet and instead focus on doing extra reps in jumps/ landings we do not normally do in our sport? Also, thought you might think this is funny, tried to do the approaches... it was eye opening.... discovered I jump the highest off my left leg (the one I had surgeries on) and cannot jump off my R leg (which has no injuries) running into it and my two foot on both sides were pretty even height wise. I am going to work on this... Thanks for everything you do!
@TheKneesovertoesguy
@TheKneesovertoesguy 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! I think if you are a RL jumper for instance, you should spend a lot of time practicing your LR jump to even out your tendons and muscles. Usually people dont have equal jumping abilities on their single leg jumps! For volleyball you may not need to work on your single leg jumps though!

I took 30 years off from Bball and ruined my back from heavy lifting before I fixed it and my knees but now approaching 60 I decided to dunk two handed touch the back of my neck with the ball. Going to start practicing soon. This helps, thx. Marques Johnson did a one handed one but everyone that age that has done it looks old. I won't.

Hey there! I don't play soccer, but you can apply these principles to the sport yourself! You can study my philosophies on training here: 8 Pillars of Transformation: kneesovertoesguy.medium.com/i-went-from-in-pain-with-a-19-inch-vertical-jump-to-pain-free-with-a-42-inch-vertical-jump-by-aef1b2545bea For soccer in particular, a way to get your gears turning and thinking about the sport a little differently could be getting good at your opposite leg handling the ball....I'm not as well versed in soccer, so you would need to use some creativity on what drills would look like in this regard, but there's no reason you can't become a BEAST of a player/coach in your own right!!!

Ben, what shoes do you recommend for basketball? I remember hearing something a while back when you were trying to find the lowest toe to heel rise you could in a basketball shoe. The Nikes you are wearing in the video seem to have a fairly substantial toe to heel rise. I prefer low top as well to free up the ankles. Honestly I feel most natural jumping in barefoot shoes like merrell trail gloves but that wreaks havoc on my joints landing with 0 cushion. I feel very unnatural in anything with any kind of substantial toe to heel rise as I basically only wear flat slip ons or barefoot shoes. I actually think wearing basketball shoes may have contributed to my knee pain after going so long with a flat shoe and trying to return to the courts wearing basketball shoes after not playing for a long time. Any advice would be appreciated. Been following your content for a good while now and did a few months of your ATG online training in the beginning of the year. Really great stuff! Appreciate all you are doing.

What about running shoes😂😂
@ThePetieProject
@ThePetieProject 3 жыл бұрын
@@mphakanation wanted to circle back around to this because I've been through the ringer with shoes and am finally finding solutions. After Ben's recommendations I ended up landing on the converse all star bb pro low tops. They have very low heel drop and designed by the same shoe designer as thr Kobe's. I literally couldn't wear them for more than an hour or my knees would start hurting. This was the same situation for anything other than totally flat or barefoot shoes. At a certain point I figured screw it, I will just use my barefoot shoes for everything. It only took a few weeks of running around on the field with them for Achilles issues and lower leg pain to spring up. Keep in mind this was after almost 2 years of wearing nothing but barefoot shoes so it's not like I was just trying this day 1 with new barefoot shoes having never worn them. I finally decided that I had to adapt away from my dependency on the flat shoe. I researched running shoes and landed on the saucony kinvara 11. They have a very minimal 4mm heel to toe drop and the arch support I was looking for. I started a regimine of alternating my barefoot shoes and these every other day. Then after a couple of months I started alternating my all star bb pro in every third day. Needless to say I can now wear my bb pro lows and love them! I still alternate back and forth between barefoot, the saucony with 4mm heel rise, and the bb pro. Today was the first day I've shot basketball pain free in what feels like years. This is combined with a training regimine that was heavily influenced by Ben and atg that I have been following for the last year. In summary I would say that the barefoot or 0 drop shoes can become a crutch in some ways. I was so sold on having to wear 0 drop shoes because it helped take stress off of my knees that I actually built a dependency and pigeon holed myself. My Achilles, lower legs and feet weren't strong enough for explosive movements in them, but my knees weren't strong enough for explosive movements in more supportive shoes. Luckily I have reverse engineered the issue that got me there and am continuing to make progress in a way that keeps me flexible among all of my shoes and activities I love to do. I hike and lift in my barefoot shoes. I wear my running shoes for casual wear or explosive training and field play, and I'm slowly working my way back into playing basketball with my basketball shoes. I hope this helps someone that may be experiencing the same issues I was having and I recommend you give the kinvaras a try.

Hey there, Marc. You are SO WELCOME!!! For Dunk Balance, I like to keep it at no more than 5 jumps per option... So: 5 LR 5 RL 5 R 5L = 20 jumps This way, you can maintain pain-free adaptation... it's amazing how much progress you can CONTINUE to make by training your elasticity with my system at: www.atgonlinecoaching.com ...while working Dunk Balance 1x per week! At ATG we don’t address conditions. Conditions have their place but we believe the human body was designed correctly, and our role in the system is helping you travel a route of improving your pain-free ABILITIES. For example, 2006 chronic knee conditions have resolved on our route thus far. While we are known for knees, we are actually a full body fitness system of: Zero (bodyweight-only, 30 minute sessions) Dense (gradual dominance of additional load, 30 minute sessions) Standards (strength system of measurable targets for 20 human motions, 30 minute sessions) Bulletproof (off-season pro athlete transformation, 60 minute sessions, etc.) Equipment list by program: kneesovertoesguy.medium.com/equipment-by-program-5a50fc84f9ac All programs follow the same schedule: M-W-F Lower Tues-Thurs Upper and Mobility You can learn the entire system on the site from Day 1, and we use an app to coach your form and answer your questions under 24 hours, 7 days a week. Maybe his knees are stronger after the surgeries... seems common with athletes especially after ACL injuries. Blake griffin and many other big dunker have had the injury. Or could possibly due to the focus on recovering the knees which strengthens them considering most people don't focus on it if they have not injured them.

Curious as to whether it's possible to do this after an orthoscopy on a torn meniscus. I'm supposed to have that surgery next Thursday and I'm curious as to whether it would be better to get it done, then do ATG or to postpone and see if my issues go away after training ATG. I've lived with the tear for about 8 years so if it would be better to not have any meniscus removed, then I could probably just postpone or cancel it if something like this could help the pain go away naturally. Thoughts?
