@@Tinyteacher1111Bless you 🙏 I am 72 years old on Tuesday and I still am working with one of the 2 brothers with autism, that I have been working with for 20 years. The youngest of the 2 has been out of the house for 2 years now. He became too violent to keep at home anymore. His family and I have been bruised and bitten and battered for the whole time. But he got 6ft plus tall and with lots of weight behind him. We could no longer manage it or him. He even bit off a piece of his dad's ear... His mom calls the hospital everyday to see how he is doing. It gives us all a heavy heart that he can't be home. But that is where he needs to be. Try not to feel bad that he is gone and it's okay to feel relief that you don't have to be afraid and abused anymore. It's the best thing for everyone involved. My prayers are with you. 🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏🙏🙏

I was mortified, hid everywhere and cry cause I could not understand kindness compassion etc. Coming from an abusive home I guess he must have sensed how sad & unhappy I was. Different times!!!! This man intones authenticity - he comes from a place of human experience, not theory. The Crux of the matter is that true suffering does confer a visceral wisdom that is essential for self awareness - which also seems to be the key to understanding the other - the more I understand myself the more I see myself everywhere, in everyone, and in every facet of life, beyond all we previously understood, and collapsing the boundaries between our experience of The sacred, and the profane. Reflecting upon Life is hard - and holy.

There’s no “should” about meditation. It doesn’t work for every person; and there are different types of meditation. There are specific situations in which meditation can be harmful - something which isn’t discussed enough among meditation teachers. Many people who have true PTSD can do worse if they do certain mindfulness meditation techniques. This is well-documented, btw. Meditation is something to try; it may or may not be helpful. There’s no “should.”

I have a lot of these kids in my ESL classes. Its always good to see them ALL again the following September! Life is short and very scary when you believe that the way you feel is caused by other people, and does NOT come from your own self! They don't understand how they themselves function, how their own minds work. Be sure to teach this and give them chances to express and feel the love and gentleness and tenderness they have in their own hearts. So many of them have been so traumatized by war and brutality that they have just never known how that feels for themselves.

I'm reminded of a poem by Rumi that goes: This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

The point comes after you say you will not bequeath bitterness to your children you understand there will come a time when they are faced with the same and the experience is shared. Children have to experience for themselves to totally believe. But sometimes (I speak from experience) one of the children begins to treat you as what they’ve been told and that causes big division and heartache. So even from the middle way I think it’s okay to teach values that manifest in their eventual understanding. They will see as the behavior will not desist just because the ex has moved on to a new partner. Time will tell and that’s really the only thing they will innerstand✌️🕊️💜

Listening to Jack's story, it occurred to me that i have this false belief that most people have had happy lives and don't experience the suffering and mental anguish that i have. It suddenly became clear to me that every single person has had great suffering in their lives, struggled with self doubt, had terrible fears. And knowing this i feel so much tenderness for everyone, for every living thing.

Culturally women have been trained to absorb losses and therefore take this high road in divorce. We get our angel wings if we stayed married to such a man and we get our angel wings when we absorb all the losses and speak no ill when we leave. However, ten years since divorce - while I am the spiritual sage because I have elevated myself in my poverty (not! lol), this is not something that has been fair or reasonable for my children. If I could go back I would get a great lawyer and be able to afford excellent therapy for me and my children. I have tremendous guilt in that my children have all been hurt and bewildered by their father. I question that I wished I had protected them with some anecdotal warning labels. I take no satisfaction in that they prefer mom in a cardboard box over dad in a mansion. I really don’t. If I could go back I would want safety and security for those children.
@lousialb8962 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for shining a light on these dysfunctional cultural attitudes and the harm they do to women, children, and society. I also looked at the example Kornfield gave. While I can see that there would be no point to stooping to the husband's level of making up vindictive lies, I do wonder if it isn't an abdication of responsibility not to tell the children the truth about him (his affairs, his lies, his greed). How else can the children understand what has happened, why, or that it's wrong? When we don't speak of these things we condemn our children to having whatever childish notion their capable of formulating getting frozen in the unconscious, where it will likely drive them into the same unhealthy pattern. Looked at another way, it's not the mother who is responsible for bitterness the children may feel towards their father; he brought that on himself. To protect him from the consequences of his choices and actions is to deny him the discomfort it would cause, which is designed to function as a teacher. In short, it rewards and enables unloving behaviour. True maturity includes accountability. The "nice" and "emotional caretaker" roles (typically assigned to women) go too far and cease being productive when they don't require others to grow up too. When we allow spouses and co-parents to behave like spoiled, entitled children, we participate in keeping them that way, to the detriment of the actual children. Regarding Kornfield's example, the MORE living choice for that woman, her children, and her ex-husband (though he is unlikely to perceive it as such) is to tell the unembellished truth, not from victimhood, but from strength. She can honestly say, "Everyone deserves a wise, kind, attentive, and devoted father. It's a terribly painful disappointment that your father is incapable of that. I saw how that was hurting all of us, and I did what I could to keep us safe. We can get through this together." That teaches her children boundaries, self respect, resilience, and gives them a sense of safety and security beyond material possessions. Those are better legacies than the lie that Dad's a great guy.

I’m with Amanda when she makes her comment. My husband scapegoated me when we split up completely blaming me for what happened also for causing his breakdown which, in the eyes of everyone seems to have excused the violence he did to both me and his children, both physically and emotionally. My own family didn’t speak to me for months. I decided to take the highroad and not go after his money, and not badmouth him to our children, even though one of our 3 children was disabled. I suppose I couldn’t comprehend that he would completely neglect his own children, but he did. We lived in poverty while he lived in a mansion, had a cottage on a lake etc. He spent years telling his children, complete, lies and stories about me, and it has made my relationship with my kids very difficult. Their dad died a multi millionaire but he left absolutely nothing to his own children, not even his disabled son, who would have benefited from not solely being in government care. His second wife has a lot to answer for too so it’s not solely about men. Was I taking the high road or just plain delusional and stupid! In other words, I don’t think we should idealize someone who takes the high road because it can lead to a lot of pain and suffering for others.

Two of my kids kind of see the truth now but that doesn’t stop the hurt they have inside and my other son still idealizes his dad and is in danger of becoming him too! I see the same behaviors and patterns in all of them truth be told!

Thanks Jack.These days we don’t need to go to any monastery , you all beat the path to doing it.Just watch what comes up with awareness and the habits and conditioning will fade.I am infinite awareness behind all the stories ,this vast space is what we are. The conditioning takes some time to work through but you can be the infinite awareness whilst these invitations come up and you can just refuse them.

I am at the very beginning of this video, and thank you for the forward about suffering because it lured me in, and it is wisdom of the ages, but I felt compelled to thank, dear, Mr. Kornfield for his brilliance and wisdom that has only added to my Searching for spiritual Enlightenment and peace while waiting for Godot! Bless you, dear Sir, and I will certainly be following you and your work, and I cannot thank you enough for how it will change my life. Even in the opening sentences about suffering, you nailed my sentiments exactly, and I struggled to articulate. I know suffering for 34 years, of my 50 years, and it has been one catastrophic illness after another, until I sought spiritual enlightenment and God, and I was healed and transformed, though my journey is not finished, at least I know there is hope through spiritual enlightenment, and it truly does work and heal you, mind, body, and soul.🥰🌟🎁🙏🥰💜

Thank Yous; just listening in a bit here and found a friend. As a "Buddhist" over here in the Willamette Valley born in Berkeley/ Raised within Massachusetts I can relate to these insights, personal translations and Learnings as advice and methodologies of meaning. This stuff seems so crucial for these times of displacements; planes, trains, automobiles, records, videos, lights with changing families, cultures and spaces.

I lived in Berkeley for over 16yrs. Ashby FLEA MARKET in Berkeley was my world and I was in the drum circle there. I made friends with a main drummer and fell in love with him and his beautiful music. He is on the other side now. A BLACK MAN WAS A Buddha and they didn't see it. I DID. I moved away due to displacement and gentrification and racism, GREED, and corrupt officials. I suffered and grieve but I was put back on the path. Berkeley CA I won't forget.

Blessings and good energy from a KZbin stranger in Texas that you have a full recovery and and also wonderful caregivers during your stay. Both of my senior parents were in the hospital and ICU for 7 week and a 5 week stay last year. I understand how hospital stays can be. Hope you are well enough to get home soon. ❤

At some point, we just stop being so sensitive. We get fed up with ourselves, always feeling sorry for ourselves or fearful about things that might not even be true or might not even happen. When we think like a small person we live and experience the life of a small person. Somewhere in the past, we learned by example or you were talked down to think and be small. It might be to satisfy another person's ego or authoritative abuse. Once we leave that situation, we begin to realize our ability to think and be a bigger person. To not be a victim of circumstances or react like a scary cat. You'll know this is you if you tend to be extra kind to strangers or when around family members. You can be a full grown adult and still make yourself small around certain people.

You ALL are recognized and honored as the eternal, you are the most precious of the Creator, the I Am, and that which has always been and will always be. Our uniqueness is what makes us even more precious. The former vengeful hard drinking biker turned benevolent being, the recently divorced and downtrodden soccer mom now soaring like an eagle, our painful pasts fast becoming distant memories to be included in the Book of Records. I'm proud of you, I know what it took for you to get here, because I am you.
