A much underrated car. Back in late 1970's my mate built a 1300 Lada to compete in the Lada Rally series in his lock up without any electricity. Because funds were very limited the cost of everything had to be assessed and only necessary items were bought. Primarily, it was calculated that lightening the car as far as possible within the Regs would net greater effect so that all glass apart from the windscreen became perspex, all body panels were substituted by Fiat 124 that were 1/2 the weight and thickness, even the doors were rebuilt with a single skin in aluminium, every bolt was cut to precisely the right length and kept in a bucket, that at the end of the build gave 20kgs of scrap metal. The suspension was fully modified but the drivetrain was left standard even though the engine was regularly rev'd until the valves bounced! - the rev limiter. That car competed successfully in stage and road rallies for a few years and was then bought by another car club member who campaigned it in road rallies for a few more years all on the same used and abused drivetrain, although he did change the doors back to standard as he felt that the flimsy lightweight doors and a side impact were not compatible! To everyone in the Car Club, Dick's Lada was not a source of ridicule but of appreciation that could embarrass all but the very best Escorts, Vauxhalls, Sunbeam and Lancer

@brostenen
@brostenen Жыл бұрын
@@clivewilliams3661 I dont know if that is the reason in every single country globally. But I do know that old people bought lada, skoda and wartburg here in Denmark in the 1980's. Because eastblock cars were so darn cheap. Like 1/6'th of the price of a new Mercedes.
@clivewilliams3661
@clivewilliams3661 Жыл бұрын
@@brostenen It was the same in UK and I knew several people who bought those three makes, who either bought the cars because they didn't have the money or wanted the simplicity of the basic vehicle or both. Most older people were used to driving basic vehicles in their younger days of a similar standard and besides they no longer had the need to look cool. My mate with the Lada couldn't afford an Escort to rally and the championship was cheap motorsport, another mate bought a Skoda Estelle to get a new car cheap, instead of the suspect pre-owned ones he was used to for much the same price. And a third family friend bought a Wartburg for much the same reason as he had to do a 200mile (320Km) round trip each week for his engineering business and he needed something reliable and being Hungarian was used to Eastern (but non-Russian) Bloc cars.That Wartburg was driven up and down the M1 at near max speed ~80mph loaded with engineering jobs in the boot for at least 3 years without a major failure, that could not be expected of a European car. Today we have a Skoda Superb that is simpler than my daughter's similar aged Passat , but not simple enough for my aged liking, it is however, more reliable than hers.
@netiturtle
@netiturtle Жыл бұрын
What's underrated about it though. You'd have to throw everything away apart from the body, and this body rusts as soon as there is rain in neighboring country. I think it had thicker metal to make the rusting process last longer, but this also makes it heavier. I mean the base car had actual suspension, which is a progress compared to even later fully Russian-developed cars, but its too soft for tuning. Good for a show and evoking nostalgic emotions, but there are so many better options

That day was good enough reason to wash my hands of him especially for killing my baby beast.

Eastern European here, I just want to say this: my grandpa used to be the head of a hospital wing, (so a local 'important head') and had to wait for aaages to get his "Zhiguli" (Lada) and he just *cherished* the car. Its interiors looked like nothing in the video shown in this video. The seats were much simpler. But the man cared for his car, and was it not for his nephew totaling the vehicle, then today it would have been a piece of retro art.

A true car guy with tonnes of skill and talent... I would rather have that Lada over most stuff i see getting done nowadays! really gorgeous looking car and looks incredibly fun to drive it sideways! grand job Dave!

I've got exactly same car in almost original spec, except for been lowered by 35mm and using skinny 13 inch wheels with a white side walls, everything else bone stock as it was when my car came out back in 1982 and its done only 39 thousand km from new

I learned to drive in one just like this in Kyiv, Ukraine. And by that I mean it was the same exact colour. But it had 13" wheels, purely symbolic brakes, and a 1.2 litre engine that mostly converted petrol into noise. The local market name was Lada 2101 (and its variants 21011, 21013).

Everyone seems to say 'the worst car...' but, as said in the video, it traces its roots back to the Fiat 124 which was an example of cutting edge tech on it introduction - and even to this day is an impressive bit of kit. OK, Lada made the engineering simpler...

Always saying how badly you did, try to find materials on the topic and prepare carefully. In Lada, many elements were reinforced, the suspension was changed for the better, the clutch and gearbox synchronizers were strengthened. there are documents that confirm that Soviet engineers gave an unsatisfactory assessment of many parts of the car, but they needed a cheap car, so they were looking for compromises

I worked at a Lada dealership in the late 70's and we sold loads of them ! IF they were serviced correctly and looked after, they were a bloody good car for the price. I remember they were imported with horrible Russian cross ply tyres which we removed and replaced with radials before they were sold. And that big tool kit in a leather satchel in the boot plus the owners handbook which was more like a Haynes manual ! What British car had all that !!

Sleepers are AWESOME! Back in the early '80's I had a '72 Toyota Celica with the 18 RC engine. The "Progressive Two Barrel" was giving me grief and as a poked through my box of carbs and adapters I happened across an old Two to Four barrel adapter AND a 600 CFM Holley. "What if" I thought. The adapter base needed a bit of modification to fit, the Holley was a simple bolt on after changing to a 3" Power Valve and #40 jets. The carb fit well - it even had a 10" chrome air cleaner! The project was completed with a simple rubber fuel line and a throttle linkage by means of a 2' piece of wire with a wrench as a handle. (No sense fabricating a linkage if it won't run0 Somewhat surprisingly, it DID run - quite well at that. After a couple of blasts around the block I added a cable throttle linkage, ending up with a unique "Rice Rocket". I also added a header and a "Stebro" glass pack muffler - I will say the sound of the secondary's kicking in certainly was different!

In Russia for those RWD LADAs the most common type of swap is BMW E30 swap. They use both front and rear undercarriage and motor. More light swap is engine only - there is an 16 valve LADA engine(similar to zetec) that might give something close to 200hp after rebuild.

For being the "worst" car it managed to win the 1967 European Car of the Year award. I've only driven the actual Lada's (vaz 2101), not the rebranded Fiat's, but they're outright unkillable, if you give them a service every now and then. Both belonged to my father. He still has one conserved in a garage. The first one went over for about a 1.5 million kilometers and would have probably continued to chooch if rust wouldn't have consumed it. He'd still be driving the second one, if serviceable parts were still readily available, but being almost a half century car, you can imagine that parts are pretty sparse nowadays outside of a select few countries (even there they're probably running out), and the costs of them ain't worth it for a daily.

Great video, I’m a huge Lada fan, my first car was a Lada Riva, it’s great to see a classic right hand drive 2101 restored to such a high standard, the colour is even close to an original factory colour of the time. I would have preferred to see it restored to original factory specification, with the standard engine and wheels, but then I am a hopeless purist.

I had a 1971 LHD SEAT 124, running about the north-west for a few years in 1978, '79 and '80, which cost me £200 to buy at the time from a Wallasey car dealer who didn't want it on his forecourt! The usual faded yellow colour, no mod-cons except a radio mostly tuned to the Irish radio station, RTE radio 2. 1200cc SEAT/Fiat motor. Cheap to insure (nobody would have wanted to steal it!), very economical on fuel, never broke down, went like the clappers and I was never worried about parking dings or anything (which it never received anyway); great carefree motoring! AMB352S was the rego, no sign of it now of course. Got pulled over by a cop on the M53 once in a snow flurry; he asked if I knew that the left rear wheel wasn't going round, it was just sliding on the snow! I'd hit a pot hole and damaged something! Still going, though! I fixed that at the weekend and I don't count that as a blight on the car! Look back on it fondly, good old days! It failed an MOT in 1980 due to severe floor pan rust around the sill area. I had a much flasher car at the time that had occasional outings; I won't identify that here, save for mentioning that it had a 2.8 litre Ford Cologne engine, and unfortunately, it ended up running a few big end bearings. A backyard (ginnel) mechanic in Birkenhead had the car for a few weeks to remedy at the agreed price of £50 + the rusty MOT-failure SEAT, which I was more than happy with. He did a proper repair job including replacing a worn distributor shaft. I had the Ford until mid-1983 with no on-going issues. Great video! Keep 'em coming!
