Grad school has always been (and still is) something I am interested in pursuing. For so long I heard “it’s hard to go back once you stop,” which made me feel like I needed to dive in right after my BA. After talking to my professors though, they encouraged me to get some experience as a full-time teacher before pursuing higher-Ed to allow me to make connections to my teaching experience. It’s definitely still a goal, but any and all advice about the right time is always helpful. I know it’s not my time but I’ll be excited when it is! Great video!

I started working towards a masters a couple years after graduation. It took me about 10 years to get my MLIS. Moved states in the middle of the progress. In New York, back then you needed 30 hours of graduate education to get a permanent teaching license. You had 5 years to do it. In Virginia you have to renew every 5 years. Early on I decided to get my masters because it opened doors to me outside of teaching and school libraries. I was only a school librarian, never a classroom teacher, for 32 years.

My question is how do you do it with kids. Do you have any advice or tips? I want to go and get the master's, but I have a one-year-old and am currently prego with baby number #2. My plan is to maybe enroll for the spring, but I am hesitant. I teach Spanish 1 & 2 in high school. I am thinking about getting my master's in bilingual education. The program that I am looking offers one night class per week. I think it is manageable. Baby is not due till July. Any thoughts? I don't want to overload myself with a new baby and take on something that I can't complete.

Did you get a general masters in education or something specific? I have tossed around the idea of more education in reading. I feel teaching students to read and write is so amazing but I want to be “professional” in my teach of reading. 😊

I just got a general degree. I could not for the love decide on one that is specific. I originally wanted to get a reading specialist degree but after seeing the role of the reading specialist where I live, that is not something I want to do. I was really drawn towards the personalized learning classes with Flexpath.

@@BridgingLiteracy thank you so much for your reply! Definitely something I will keep an open mind about. I have been in kindergarten for 5 years. I did my undergrad online and at my own pace and LOVED it!
