A sticker to point out the machine is user programmable. The sticker for the stickers should have a quarter size sticker on it, with a recursive stack of ever smaller quarter sized stickers, all announcing the recursive stickers. Another sticker should make the customer aware of the EXTREME SUPER GLUE that ensures the magnesium would be entirely ripped off the machine should anyone try to remove any them. Thank you for this kind of detailed review. I've been using a lot of laptops in the past year from several different manufacturers, and I have to say - it is *really* hard to find one that has the combination of a good chassis, good keyboard, high quality matte screen (way too many with ~60%-70% sRGB), decent noise levels, and a reasonable price. My go-to productivity laptop, the Dell XPS series, has been a major let down in the past 1-2 years. Terrible quality control with LCD light bleed of a totally unacceptable degree for their price point (which Dell is either unwilling or unable to fix properly) defective touchpads, and noisy fans. You really go into the most useful details in your reviews, and recognize shortcomings appropriately. Good job, and thank you.
@lejoshmont20932 жыл бұрын
I got the business version(precision) of the 17in for linux support and I haven't had any issues with back light bleed and the touch pad is pretty darn good. Over all I am really happy with it and the build quality. Coming from a mac book it is just as solid or more. I would say it is a high bar to meet in terms of build quality and over all. It checked the most of my boxes for what I was looking for in a new laptop and it has exceeded my expectations.

Thank you!!! This video and others that you have created have helped me a great deal! I have been using an HP Spectre X360 with Ubuntu for the past, six years. But, it has never worked perfectly. And now, from about a year ago until now, there are larger 'bugs' popping up...slow starts, extremely slow shut-downs or restarts...whole logs of things pop on the screen. And, updates get stuck in a loop where nothing seems to update. As best as I can tell, there is some kind of BIOS incompatibility... So, I just purchased the little brother of your recommendation. A high pixel / very good screen is most important to me (after made to run Linux/Ubuntu). I did not know about this company before your video. Thank you, again : )

Oh man, I think I feel a little buyer's remorse as well. I just bought the RedmiBook 15 Pro (2022) for around 1200 euros and it has an i7-12650H (which is almost as good as i7-12700H (?)), RTX 2050 (which has around half the G3D mark rating as RTX 3050 Ti). Then both laptops have most of the things I want: 2k+ resolution, TB4 connection for possible gaming using an eGPU, keyboard with full size arrow keys and home/end keys, decent dedicated GPU, 15" form factor, lightweight, and good build quality. The only things that was missing from RedmiBook, that I wanted, but this laptop has are: upgradeable RAM (Redmi has 16GB soldered), and two M.2 slots (Redmi only has 1). Then Slimbook also beats RedmiBook by having: 1 more USB A port, 10WHr more battery capacity, 1080p webcam (Redmi has 720p), 1 more native video output (Redmi has HDMI 2.0 and TB4 but the extra USB C port doesn't support display out), and TUX key instead of Windows key ;) But I think I'm still happy with my purchase because I think the lack of features compared to the Slimbook is justified by the price difference. But now I'll definitely keep my eye on the future iterations of this laptop (maybe in 4-5+ years). Thanks for the review!

Great video, Merci! It is really funny how Apple hardware is a used comparison point by people from the Linux world. I get it that it is very good quality (usually) and so popular most the people tried it at least once, but still, keeping referring to Apple is not a good idea. Even Microsoft struggles to produce hardware that can compete in quality with Apple. So it is mission impossible for slimbook to produce as good as them. In my opinion, it doesn't serve them. It should be compared to Asus, Acer, and Dell, ... people doing a much smaller amount of each series than Apple, which has very little hardware choice in comparison. And Slimbook is doing at least as good as them, if not better!

What it takes to get to apples level is the willingness to put years into a product of R&D and then never ship it. for every product apple release they will have many internal projects that are multiple years of dev behind them that never ship. Your write that means smaller OEMs are going to struggle to do this as they just cant afford to have the majority of thier staff working on projects that will not ship.

Buying laptop directly supporting linux is future investment. If every linux user would buy M1/M2 from Apple, it would look like nobody needs linux compatible HW, and counting on reverse engineering them by some enthusiasts is crazy (although they do amazing job with asahi linux, all respect to their results). Neglecting this aspect when selecting new HW and just buying new macos/windows machine because of "good HW" will cause you more harm in the long run, as it's very easy to not support linux then, and lot of new HW is again closed source (see new issues with MIPI IPU6 webcams or new windows laptops with Pluton security chip not booting linux at all by default).

If you really need to move... I guess it can be interesting. If you want to do heavy work, buy a desktop powerful machine. Why bothering with a crappy "mobile" graphics proprietary card ? Use a Steam Deck to play on the move !

Interesting point. I never thought about the Steam Deck's impact on gaming laptops. So many gamers have said with their Steam library mostly on the Deck, they're barely using their laptops or even their desktops anymore. It's changed how they game...

@@GarrisIiari And it's probably for the best. Laptops are terrible for gaming in many ways. You can have a good big machine at home to work / play with a good screen and good performances and then use a real mobile gaming device to play on the go. The overall cost should be the same (laptops cost is insane for lower performance) for a muuuuch better experience.

"that I should have bought" - did that also hold for the Executive 14 vs tuxedo's latest infinitybook pro 14?

I never bought any of these, so, no!

Too bad - given that they have the same basis, I'd have loved a direct comparison :)

This would have been the laptop I'd have purchased if only it was also convertible with stylus. I ended up getting an Asus ROG Flow x13, so now begins the effort of making it work well with Linux. So far I haven't found any Linux laptops with both a dedicated GPU and convertible form factor + stylus.

I wish we got more convertible laptops running Linux out of the box!

You should review the Powerboard Tyche laptop when it releases.

What's your opinion on Slimbook pulling an 🍎and integrating the power button into the keyboard?

It doesn't matter in the slightest, I think

One major thing that's missing from your reviews are thermals. - Fan noise doesn't make sense without knowing thermals. Fans can be very quite but CPU may hit 80 degrees when you're browsing. Some may be comfortable with loud fans & lower temps, others might disagree. - Specs also don't make sense without knowing thermals. You can have a 12700h which throttles to 10300 level after 15 minutes of load. Please try to include sustained performance/stress test/temps 🙏🏻.

I want to skip Intel and NVIDIA as much as possible. Even if the hardware is usable since it comes from Linux first brand, but NVIDIA will definitely have some issue on Wayland. And Intel iGPU is noting to write home about compared to AMD APU.

The web camera is terrible, the microphone is terrible too. I bought the 14 inches version. It is impossible to make a video call with it

Is the RAID option a hardware RAID? or are the 60€ just for the setup? I get that Ubuntu (I only checked that one) doesn't really offer a (gui) install with RAID, but I'll most likely install my favorite distro from scratch (no, not LFS, but a fresh install) so I'd have to initiate the RAID by myself anyway. Upon looking at the install options I noticed that you can choose RAID and "no OS", which doesn't really make sense to me (as in: it has to be a hardware RAID then, otherwise this isn't possible (or viable, as you can easily erase all partitions and just use the whole disk)).

question: Does hybrid switching work? Like it does on windows? It's quite competitive to the Asus Zephyrus G15, not bad! Might be my next laptop! I have a few more questions though, where can I ask em?
