Well, if you’re a psychic, curse maniac, or a fighting-type trainer, you can use some techniques available to Pokémon. Psychics can use telepathy, telekinesis, teleportation, divination, clairvoyance, hypnosis, and other passive psychic abilities, like reading the history of an object or location, such as a prized possession, ancient relic, or family home. Curse maniacs can use some ghost-type techniques like curse, night shade, etc and can communicate with the dead, shadow-step, become intangible, inspire visceral terror in their foes, and can prophesy (predict the future with 100% accuracy); see: Morty, the gym leader. Fighting-type trainers can use a suite of fighting-type techniques (jump kick, hi-jump kick, circle throw, low kick, low sweep, focus blast, aura sphere, etc.) and have superhuman strength, vitality, and endurance.

My friends and I have 2 wildly different PTU campaigns going: one of them is set in not-Edo Japan, and we’re a trio of siblings from a family that maintains a shrine to Moltres, going on a pilgrimage to the other shrines so we can ultimately prove our worth to our god and be blessed by it. My character’s kind of a Pokémon version of Princess Yue from Avatar in that she was stillborn but revived by Ho-Oh via a Rainbow Feather which let our parents pray to Ho-Oh, and that’s the reason I went with Hex Maniac and Sage as my starting classes. The other one’s actually based on Subjectively’s fan-made Mazah region, and we’ve done a mish-mash of the standard Gym challenge to prove our strength, dungeon crawling through ancient ruins and unraveling one PC’s long-lost divine heritage (literally granting him fire powers), and fighting the evil team of the region that’s fixing League fights and depopulating whole colonies of Pokémon to conduct experiments on shifting your type outside the Terastal phenomenon in Scarlet/Violet. A big secret in this game is that my character is the son of the BBEG and ran away, but we’re getting close to the reveal and I’m so excited because I worked with the GM and I’ve been dropping obscure hints and generally acting weird throughout the whole game, but ONLY when the evil team is involved.

Fun story, when I played with my friends in PTU, they were all normal kids, nerds and shy boys...then there was Sid, my character. Did was this big, burly, bald punk who took no crap and was roughneck, stylist, and a dash of rocker. He loved his pokemon (mostly normal and fairy) the other players (whom he said was his "crew" and was generally a bad influence.) recruiting people into his gang and punching people in the face.

Doesn’t really fit in the setting. Ever since a certain ancient human decided to go around slaying Pokémon with a sword, causing them to hide in tall grass, and was cursed by Arceus, transforming into the first Darkrai, humanity made a spiritual contract wherein they sacrificed their ability to use weapons for the ability to bond with and train Pokémon, which wasn’t really all that much of a loss seeing as how absurdly powerful some Pokémon are or can become.

As a guy whos run a bunch of PTU campaigns, this is a really good video to get people into it! Some personal tips I feel: First, there are 2 other Pokemon systems being made by the same team and hosted on the same website, so its worth knowing that so you don't download the wrong one! PTU is the most cohesive and feature complete, so generally you want to go with it, but theres also PTA (Pokemon Tabletop Advanced) which is an older version of the system, using D&D character stats for humans and pokemon stats for pokemon (which is why PTU is called 'united,' it unified the stat system to make it less confusing for pokemon-human interactions) and Pokemon Tabletop Journeys/Odyssey, which is the next set of rules in development, intended to streamline the rules to make the game simpler and faster to run. Its incomplete, and I don't have personal experience with it, but may be worth looking into if you find the amount of rules in PTU daunting. Speaking of which... If you're the DM, be prepared to make rulings on the fly. PTU does its best to emulate Pokemon down to every single system in the games, which means theres a LOT of niche rules and things you'll have to look up, and sometimes its easier to just say 'screw it, this is how I'm running it!' Hell this video didn't even get into describing base-stat-relation-ratios when talking about your pokemon stats and oh god, thats a thing and a half on its own to get your players to understand. As you play this game you will constantly discover there are new rules and fully fleshed out systems you didn't even know about in here - don't worry, just take it all in stride. Everything's a learning experience. And also, while I agree Roll 20 probably makes bookkeeping easiest, if you want spectacle, I run my game on Tabletop Simulator, where you can go on the workshop and download figures of every pokemon up to gen 7 that are ANIMATED to use in your campaign! They even have a little thing that makes them mega evolve - its really neat! I still recommend using that excel sheet they mentioned for character sheets though, it makes tracking stats so much easier, and automatically applies a bunch of modifiers that are a pain to keep remembering. And speaking of keeping track of things... you probably dont want to run a game for more than 4 players max... 3 being ideal. Each player is actually 2 players for the sake of the initiative count, since you have to worry about both the trainer and their pokemon, and as a DM you have to balance encounters accordingly. If you want to further extrapolate things, its more like a party of 3 trainers has 21 characters for you to worry about if they all have full squads. Balancing encounters is difficult and might take some getting used to, so be ready to change things on the fly if you realize your gang is hopelessly outmatched, or if they're actually curbstomping your encounter and - oh hey what do you know more wild pokemon heard the commotion and showed up! There are random pokemon generators out there for the latter issue which gives you a full sheet of stats for them. And also, dont be like me and make one of your bosses a ghost type early game when almost none of the cast has anything they can do to it. Ghosts are BS.

For anyone interested in alternative games for Pokemon there's a few options. There's Pokemon Tabletop Adventures which has released it's 3.0 version not too long ago which is looking much better than it's previous editions. There's also Pokerole which uses a dice-pool system inspired by the WoD games. And there's Pokemon Pen & Paper which is honestly the simplest Pokemon Tabletop game that I have found, for better or worse. I haven't had the chance to play them all so I can't really give any good information but they look neat and are worth a read.

I plan on combining Pokémon with call of Cthulhu, making something that someone close to the Pokémon manga. I figured that a skill-based system would be better for Pokémon than a level-based one. Remember that in Pokémon, you’re just playing a normal person. To be clear about this it is mostly called of Cthulhu, but with Pokémon creatures and with the tape chart. This also means that humans are considered Pokémon and are like the EeVees of apes. I also might use calcium basic role-playing system after a while, but I’m actually fairly confident that Conneen with Pokémon would be a lot of fun. Golden edition you can’t capture legendary, you can gain their loyalty, but all legendary will both lower you sanity and will not be captured.

As a forever GM for this game I can say it's a lot of fun. No two games are alike (unless you make em that way) with trainers and teams always different and changing on the fly. Sadly one thing that really hinders this, like most TTRPGS, is the lack of GM. No one wants to run a grueling game with such a daunting book and there sadly isn't any modules to kickstart ideas. But please, do not let my griping dissuade anyone. This system is rich and wonderful with the ability to do practically anything. So get out there and catch some pokemon!

Ok so random thing my brain came up with for a character but was thinking just now “what if i make it dnd” im about to start working on a campaign for a friend who has never played dnd (i have played but with very limited knowledge and resources, a lot of friends, and a dm who liked to mess with us but graduated so i dont see him anymore) anyways heres the concept A bunch of random kids get picked to be guardians. Basically people getting trained (along with their pokemon) to protect the legendary pokemon of different regions. It can be a person a region or a person for so many pokemon. Also each person gets pokemon that best match them. An idea i had to go along with it was none of them really knows the other’s identities so it can lead to interesting interactions (this works in my campaign since im the dm and the other person is the only player) if i want i can also mix in things like gyms and contests. Let me know what i need to fix but i think it could be a good idea if i tried

I wonder how Shinys are determined. My bet is 3 d100s, and if they all match, it's shiny ( either that, or the dm just decides which ones are shiny)
@StarkMaximum
@StarkMaximum 3 жыл бұрын
The game actually broadens the term "Shiny" to refer to any form of "Unique" Pokemon. You're encouraged to change not just the color of a Pokemon, but its type, abilities, moves, and other things about the Pokemon. Some examples they use are a Fire/Ghost Ninetales found in the ruins of a burned haunted house, a white Breloom found in caves with a Glow capability, a Spinda with heart spots that uses Attract differently, and a Crystal Onix that uses an entirely new type called Glass (making it a Glass/Ground-type). Also a giant Caterpie with fucking bonkers stats and powerful moves that can't evolve. I just thought that last one was funny.

The names and the pokeball background weren't centered to each other at the end and that bothers me so much. Love the videos though.
