I think C.S. Lewis (anyone else find themselves quoting and/or thinking about his words a lot in recent years) put it best when he noted that Jesus left the average man with three options in his proclamation to be God and in testimonials of his coming back from the dead. 1.He was a lunatic, as an average man would have to be crazy to claim he was divine and mean it. 2. He was evil, as you have to be as evil as the devil himself to claim divinity when you know it's not true. 3. He truly was who He said he was, in which case we ought to say to Him, as Thomas did, that He is our Lord and our God. But let there be no patronizing nonsense about his just being a "great moral teacher." He did not leave that open to us, nor did he intend to. -C.S. Lewis, "The Shocking Alternative"- And I would add this: if you try arguing against that by saying, "oh, you really believe those old text. How do you know they were not corrupted or made up later." To that I ask a simple question: If you don't trust the sources on which Christians base their moral guidance and beliefs about God and the way the world works concerning the miraculous elements (which themselves were meant not only as an impressive or helpful act, but a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy to legitimize his claims), then why reference Jesus' quotes at all for political point-scoring, when one could just as easily question whether He actually said what He did according to said testimonies as easily as you question His miracles, His rising from the dead, and His claims to be God.

I’m an atheist and I believe he was both of the former: he gives off serious cult leader vibes, which speaks to his moral fibre, but also that he lacked some necessary self-preservation instincts, which speaks to his mental state. The two are not mutually exclusive-you can firmly believe the world is triangular and made of chocolate and still want to rule it with an iron fist. I do not bring him up in arguments unless I’m _responding_ to others bringing him up to justify bigotry, repression, etc., or I’m trying to get someone who ostensibly believes in him to, y’know, _not_ be bigoted or repressive against others, myself included.

Their point is that your political beliefs are logically inconsistent with your religious beliefs, whether or not they believe in those religious beliefs themselves. I do believe in your religious beliefs, and I'm sure there are places in my political beliefs that overlap with yours. But to point out the inconsistencies between your beliefs, even if you don't believe in one of those beliefs is not illegitimate. What you need to argue is not that they have to believe your religious beliefs to be able to critique the inconsistencies between those and your religious beliefs, but instead show how your religious beliefs and political beliefs are not inconsistent with each other.

I also don't like it when people who don't take my faith seriously barf up some context free pope quote or bible verse and then act like they've somehow won something. It's lazy. But I do think 1. people who never or no longer believe in certain parts of my faith can still take it seriously and have valid insights. A well thought and well intentioned expression of concern is a gift. 2 this channel offered a criticism of Mormonism via those hilarious Irish twins. Obviously neither the twins nor LutheranSatire are Mormon. A Mormon puppet could just sing the same song to them. I feel like concerns expressed in good faith deserve better.

@Mygoalwogel2 жыл бұрын
The important thing "for us and for our salvation" is that he resides in the preaching of his word. His commandments remove our self-justification and show us what we are really like. His good news removes our anger at and dread of God, and shows us what he is really like. That he resides "in all things" doesn't do us any good without his message.
