He is just so much better than the rest. He can play at 90% and win most tournaments (I am sure he is being honest here). Kasparov had a true equal in Karpov, at least for a decade. Magnus really has no equal. - Caruana struggled just to hold an even match, he wasn't even trying to win, took few risks then got destroyed in the rapid tie-breaks. - Ding is too inconsistent. - Nepomniatchi is brilliant but can get erratic and frustrated in long strategic grinds. - Alireza as we all can see is inexperienced and seriously over-rated (he is no 18yr old Magnus) -Nakamura can be brilliant and adventurous but he is also impulsive and inconsistent. - Giri and Duda are simply not close enough to his class

Magnus, I don't know if this motivates you, but what you've achieved in your life is huge inspiration and motivation to hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Few people can say this about their life's passions. Because of your accomplishments you continue to give meaning to other people and this is hugely important to humanity as a whole. You've done incredible things and continue to do so. I hope you reach 2900 and I hope you continue to find joy in chess. This would be a most meaningful achievement. You're the very best.

Carlsen is the GOAT of chess and he needs someone who is also brilliant in chess to motivate him to reach higher levels. This is what it feels like when you are on the top and by yourself, with no motivation to actually climb the next mountain. However, MC is a great example of someone who makes goals for himself and life is all about achieving your own goals and surpassing them, rather than competing with others! MC proves that within this video.

He's not the goat. Fisher was the goat. Most charismatic and dominated the world during a time there was no BS bots to learn from and practice against or play thousands of times against computers in your leisure. To be honest, this is what makes Olympics so special. You not only have more preparation time, but the best of the best are not that far from you, so you always have to give your best to win. Even with Phelps, he always had very strong competition, but even he was finding it difficult to start a new cycle. Having the world championship almost every year takes a big toll on Magnus, especially because he only has to lose (he doesn't gain anything he already doesn't have and if he loses, everyone will go on and on about how he's not the best ever).

So basically the rest of the chess players struggling around 2800 is ruining Carlsens hope of reaching 2900. If he wins a match it's 1 step forward, but a draw is 4 steps back and a loss is 1 year setback. So i guess he don't want to waste months on months preparing for a WC he already know he will win :) Sidenote: This channel should atleast have 1 million subs!

The 2900 rating seems almost unattainable. It becomes harder all the time to win in modern chess and every draw pulls his rating down. Capablanca said the same thing as Magnus about youth vs experience. That with age he had more knowledge but less energy. More experience but less ambition.

The problem we have in WC matches is there isn't an opponent good enough to take the game to Magnus, as it were. They barely hold draws with white. "No one is good enough to push for a win with white and take risks against me, which is quite frustrating" (Magnus Carlsen, 2019)

The only thing stopping Magnus from reaching 2900 is lack of competition. Even if he draws against 2750-2800s he's losing rating points. If he wins he only gets +1 or +2
@thijsbeentjes40082 жыл бұрын
That is how the ELO system works. If you play against worse opponents you're expected to win or else you'll lose points. If you win against a worse player you haven't really proven you're better than your current rating, so your current rating doesn't change much. If his opponents were rated higher they'd be better than they currently are, so probably Magnus would lose more games. It makes little sense to just say he'd be at 2900 if his opponents were rated higher

He has to be in the same league as the greats. He is a once in a generation player who took over where Kasparov couldn't - taking down highly booked (computered) top GMs with little opening preparation (Magnus of 2012 - 2014), destroying them in what should be theoretically drawn middle-games or grinding a win in slightly better endgames, holding a draw against Kramnik at 18yrs in a worse end-game and in time trouble.
GOAT, not only at chess but also as a role model to follow 🙏

Ratings goals, at this level, are difficult to attain, since your ceiling is gated by the level of your competition. A more realistic goal would be to be undefeated and let the rating take care of itself.

Magnus needs a real anime/manga montage moment when he realizes that his opponents are not across the board, but between his ears. No one, realistically, can or has beat him at his best. Being human beings, not computers, we have different struggles at different points of our journey. Sometimes we need to improve, sometimes we need to maintain, sometimes we need find what fuels our passion. I love that Magnus has a goal, and its motivating for him.....what happens when he reaches it? Surely that would be the greatest achievement in chess history. So what happens then? Would it be acceptable for Magnus to retire? Surely he has earned the right to go on and do anything else in life he wants, he technically already has earned that right, but.... What if he wants to keep playing? How do you ever find a new goal after 2900? 2950 doesnt quite have the same ring to it, and considering how hard climbing to that Elo would be in the first place, might not even be possible if the other competitors stay at lower 2700/2800 ratings. I would tell Magnus, as if my advice was even wanted or needed, but I would tell him not to focus on 2900. That goal, while achievable, has an ending. Humans dont do well competitively when there are ending goals. So many other sport champions, after winning their respective titles, never reach the peak again. Its truly hard to find the motivation or drive to do so, all the while battling age and health. Chess is so unique. Your mind is your weapon. You can tear your Achilles heel and still be world champion. Your body breaking down wont inhibit your ability to play. I would encourage Magnus to have a goal of loving chess. Only loving the game. Pure and simple. When, and if, he can do that, 2900 is still achievable...BUT after 2900 is reached, the motivation is still there. Perfect play will result from the clearest thoughts, and nothing clears the mind better than a peaceful spirit. Loving the game will bring a peaceful spirit, clear mind, and eventually, 2900 and above.

this is called being over the 'hill'...something that happened to Bobby Fischer when there was nobody to beat, except himself. and so, Fischer moved on from Chess. with Magnus, what could possibly be calling, other than the game that has made him internationally known? - honestly, there are a lot of problems on planet Earth right now, and those problems require skill, intelligence, and motivation. let some one else be crowned king of chess, and retire permanently; call it quits - don't be selfish (it's the selfish part that makes you miserable, or poorly motivated) find a new passion. if it's as simple as being a father, then that's what he should do.
