I’m 74 and have ended up with parent’s things and also my son and daughter in law have passed. Guilt to get rid of things! And having lived with parents that went through the 20s, 30s and wartime doing without and having to keep and use what they had it’s been hard to throw away things. Giving away is easy but throwing away is hard. BUT I’m now doing it. Thank you!!!

Congratulations! It must feel good to get rid of things, but I hear you regarding the loss of loved ones. My condolences to you regarding your son and daughter in law. My parents also were children of the 20s and 30s, so I've learned some of their frugal mindset. For example, my mother made quilts from sheets. The two I have aren't quite my aesthetic (one is from fabric scraps from all the clothes of hers and mine she made, so I cherish that aspect, but overall, it's got so much red, my least favorite color, it would be nice to have items that were more my style. I also have a summer-weight quilt she made, again, the sheet not in my exact style, but it's in wonderful condition, and I don't want to get rid of something both sentimental and functional simply because it isn't quite my taste/style. Fortunately, most of my parents' things *are* my taste, so keeping those items is a happy thing for me. But those that I don't have room for is a tough one.

Me too! 2022 for me! Just doing an intensive course. I started trying to be more organised three years ago but I have always found it hard to let some things go. Now I follow Dawn and Cas from the clutterbug and I have started to build some muscles on decluttering and letting things go. Thanks so much! I’m learning a lot! THANKS!

Hi Dawn, I’m a messy too. I was able to easily part with the many coffee mugs. My church has coffee and donuts every Sunday after mass and decided to eliminate the use of styrofoam cups. They asked parishioners if they had extra coffee mugs they wanted donate in order to be more environmental friendly. The best part for me is I still get to use my own mugs as well as enjoying other beautiful mugs. It’s a win win for everyone.

There's something wonderful that can happen when your house is minimal and then you get ill. Simple means others(husbands, kids, other family or friends) can step in for us when we need to rest. It's something everyone needs sometimes, and minimalism makes everything easier for everyone.

@@paularuotsalainen8954 I've experienced the same issue; I was really motivated at first and got through the whole house for "phase 1", as I called it, expecting to come back again in the spring and do even more. Instead, I'm finding it hard to start again. Watching these videos is helping get me in the right mindset, and re-reading my list of all the things I can do when my house is minimalized helps, too. I figure if I start small, I'll begin to build momentum. (I'm also building in rewards like outside time and guacamole - my favorites! :-) Blessings in your efforts. Don't give up! Look how far you've come already and think about how good it feels, then keep going. :-)

Great video!! I decluttered a HUGE flower vase because it was a pain to store when not in use. Consequently, I told my husband not to buy me large quantities of flowers anymore. Of course, this Mother’s Day he bought me his traditional 50 roses again. Instead of buying a vase, I grabbed a white ceramic crock from my “maybe donation” pile and put them all in there. You know what? The roses look way better than they ever did in the clear glass vase!!

They just told me your video was very thought provoking and enabled an honest conversation about how they both feel about the 'stuff' in the house. Just do like she suggests, set timer for 15 min, pick one area. You'll probably find yourself working long past the timer. I've been on the journey toward minimalism for about a year now. I definitely notice improvement in my stress level, my way of life (not moving stuff constantly out of the way, not looking for every day items for hours on end, etc). You CAN do it. It takes work but you'll see improvement super quickly and I don't regret giving anything away that I gave away, and it's been a constant process with a salvation army pickup once a month. Good luck!

First let me say I'm not an expert at anything! I'm 58 yrs old and this is the first time I have worked a job on an as needed basis...I may work 1 day a week or 5 days a week. I have been married a year and a half...my husband has been in his home 24 years so he has clutter also...I have been working on decluttering since we were married...things are coming along nicely 😊 I am loving it! I know where things are and what we have...still have a basement...2 storage rooms and a garage to do...which is a lot left to do...my point is do a little at a time...setting the timer is a great idea! I use a 30 min hour glass and it is true once you start you will want to work a little longer and do more...then you will be tired of it and stop...just remember to start again another day 😊 you will even redo things you already organized to find the best set up for you...read Marie Kondo that will help...have a keep pile...donate pile...and the unsure pile put in a box and store in another area...if in a few months you don't need anything out of it just donate it...this is just an ongoing process...I am finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel...I will now always be organized...took 58 years and I am loving it! So much easier to clean and you will save money! You will also feel really good about yourself 😊

Great ideas. I gave away my bundt pan during our last move. A few years ago I wanted to make a really cool Halloween bundt cake so borrowed the neighbor's pan! Awesome! The same neighbors borrow our riding lawn mower when they don't have time to cut their grass by hand. We loaned our leaf vac to other neighbors when we had one. We really should borrow from each other more.

YESS! I am 'one of those people'. Was organizing b4 it was a 'thing'. Love "Hoarders" and those shows. No longer have cable but KZbin prevails. Have a heavy-duty bundt pan from the late 50's. Not sure they make them anymore but would not willingly part with it. Love your videos. C U soon.

I’ve been decluttering now for a few years on and off. I went full Konmari on my house when i was nesting with my first but it didn’t work for me, everything seemed to “spark joy” . Your tips and tricks help so much and I’ve been watching you for the past few months and have taken at least three trunks full of stuff to donation. I’m always worried I’m going to miss the item when I part with it but I honestly can’t even remember even three things i donated in those runs. Thank you for your videos as always! I’m glad your feeling better!

It is rare to have such a great teacher who knows and understands the subject. Your eyes just boldly announce your love for teaching the subject. I’ve been watching so many of your videos it’s almost become a Netflix series for me, lol. Anyway, this video really spoke to me. I have depression and anxiety. My home is so cluttered that sometimes I just sit in my car and cry because I don’t want to go inside. And when I get inside I go and find a place to hide and get on my phone to get distracted. Lately it’s been distracted watching your videos, lol. Well, I finally got started, started with my fridge. It is so empty and looks so good now. I want to go to my closet next, but it is so overflowing that I think I will just pull out what I want to discard until I have made a dent and I can pull it all out at once. Thanks so much for all that you do!!! People like me really appreciate it!!!

I just found your channel and I've been so overwhelmed with my house. I actually don't have a ton of stuff but I it's still too much. I feel like I have small nick sacks all around the house that the kids have spread around or we've set down from the hurry we're almost always in. I'm most calm when my house is tidy and clean. I'm looking to get pretty minimal with as much as I can, at least in this season of life with 3 small kids. My husband is definitely not minimal (high school t-shirts 20+ years later) so sometimes I give up before I've even started. Glad I found your channel though and excited to go through some videos for motivation.

Good plan, but it’s also fun to declutter with kids! My seven year old decluttered about half of her toys yesterday to give to her young cousin. I don’t think she could have done such a great job (with the help of her 11 year old sister) if I hadn’t modeled decluttering for them so consistently over the years. And my 18 year old daughter is an absolute PRO by now!!

I appreciate when you said “if you can replace it for twenty dollars or less, it’s ok to get rid of.” I have been dwelling recently on a canvas that I removed from my home a while ago. I need a canvas now. Thinking about it has caused me anxiety and made me second guess purging other items. I will now move on, go to goodwill, buy a canvas and paint over it with my project.

I kept my bundt pans and the 9x13. I got rid of the round cake and pie pans. I love doing bundt cakes. Mix and put in oven and come back 1hr later. I take these to family and church dinners and gifts to friends. I just can't stack those dang round ones and the bundt cakes can be just a pretty as the layered cakes.

Thank you for your positive attitude. I can really see your kind soul shining through and I love listening to you. I appreciate your encouragement and tips as I try to start simplifying my home after years of illness, childbearing, and homeschooling. I have been so busy that I’ve let so much in my life go while I did what I had to do. I have used “buying” things as a source of joy and escaping from the stress in my life for far too long. Needless to say my home has become completely overrun and I’ve realized I’m teaching my children to be messy and want everything they see. I’m determining now to stop this process! Thank you for your help!!!

Hi Dawn! I stumbled across your channel last week, and I have been binge watching you ever since. I am a chronic keeper of everything, but I also hate messes. I have been complaining and agonizing for the past 5 years that we have lived in our 1500 ft² house that there's no way we can live here manageably with 4 kids. I have already transformed my kitchen and started on my bedroom and I can't tell you how much you have saved my sanity already. I've tried to get help before, but nothing was feasible or relatable for me. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. My husband is so happy too! You are a God-send. And I love your laugh. Blessings to you and your sweet family!

The would I buy it again question has been key for me a lot lately. I came across a vase the other day that I had with some stuff for my grown daughters to look through and after a couple of days of that vase in my head, I decided I better keep it because it was the only vase I have that size and I would love to buy some flowers and have that on my table, BUT #1, the dining room table is usually the clearing house for my clutter that I am decluttering and #2, after having washed it up and getting ready to put it away I asked myself would I actually buy this particular vase to put flowers in. The answer was no and so I took it immediately to the donation box and gave myself permission that if I do buy some flowers, I will also buy a vase that I love.

I am so glad I came across your vlogs... I have been watching it this week and every time I finish a video I go to a room with a trash bag. Lol, my husband asked, "What brought this epiphany?" hahaha... Today, I went to Goodwill with an SUV full of stuff including furniture. I might not get as minimalist as you are, but I am heading in the right direction. Thank you and please keep posting videos. Please include how you keep up with things on a daily basis, I mean how do you maintain an orderly home? I have test drive minimalism last spring since we were on quarantine so watching your videos and getting more aggressive on this area was and is not a problem. Thanks a bunch and more power!
