I never knew my aunt too well, but she'd come down with cancer when i was little. She was laid up in a hospital to try and alleviate the pain, but had opted to simply let it take her. Losing her hair and her mind, the family gathered about her bed trying to pray it away as she laughed at the "tiny people dancing on her pillow". They'd thought the devil had gripped her, as she was the spiritual sort. I remember her taking my hand and telling me that she wanted me to have her cards. She handed me her tarot deck. Rather worn, she clearly used them often. But i barely held them 10 sec before they were pulled out of my hands, tossed into the bin. "Dont ever touch those things," dad said, "its the devil trying to turn you away". And so they continued with the hymns as she remained off in her own little world. The last gift from my aunt, just. The fear is real for a lot of people, even in our modern age. When I was in my early teens, I was diagnosed with clinical depression, though my father, who was at the time a licensed therapist, and had been my entire life, rejected the diagnosis outright, stating confidently that if I was *actually* depressed, he would've noticed. When my symptoms became too much for even him to ignore, this same man, later sat me down and very gravely, very genuinely, asked me if I was possessed by a demon, and that if I was, I needed to tell him, and he could 'get me help'. It was so surreal, and direct, I was in disbelief, and remember uncomfortably laughing and responding something like 'oh yeah, demon possession, that's totally the problem' (besides just how wild the accusation was on its face, it was even wilder taking into account that, at the time, I was an extremely active churchgoer, attending a service or church group at least 3 times a week, often more, so not the most likely candidate for possession... Though with lack of evidence being cited as compelling evidence, well.) - I'd never seen him look as concerned in my whole life, as he got when I said that, and he responded in a hushed tone that this was deadly serious, and if I was under the influence of a demon, I must tell him right now. When you live with that mindset, that anyone you know (including yourself) could very well be living as a puppet of a supernatural force of objective evil, and that this fate could befall anyone, at any time, without discernable cause, without evidence... That can help people justify a lot of irrational actions. Like you said, even a lack of evidence can be evidence.

I thought it was a great movie. What I think people are missing, including this reviewer (though I think the video was very thought-provoking and well made), was the film maker's motivations for making the film. Eggers really just wanted to make a "witchy" movie from the point of view of a 15th/16th century person and to tell the story in a way that would be typical of its time. Strange things happen: crops fail; animals are born with defects; accidents; bad weather; children disappear; people become "possessed." These things are all attributed to some unseen person or group in the shadows doing black magic. That's the spookiness of it. Though it makes some indirect comments about human nature, the movie is supposedly to be like a myth or a fairytale and isn't supposed to be viewed through a modern lens. It's supposed to be "old."
@FoxMoon896 ай бұрын
My problem is that film doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. The film is clear from the start that the witch is real, but the middle portion has this religious paranoia feel that doesn't jibe with the beginning or the end. So it feels like a random series of supernatural events interspaced by interactions among a family consisting almost entirely of dreadfully unlikable people. And that's another sin in my book - most of the family is so deeply unlikable and lacking in redeeming qualities that you just don't care what happens to them. They feel flat stereotypes instead of real people. Thomasin gets a little bit of depth, but her character journey is so understated that the ending feels more played-for-creep-factor than thought-out conclusion.
@kylegonewild5 ай бұрын
@@FoxMoon89 Is it clear the witch is real though? Accusations of witchcraft and witness of supernatural phenomenon are by nature unreliable narration. Just because you see something on the screen doesn't make it real in the context of the story being told. That aside, if you assume it is all real that's the horror half of the equation; despite knowing their circumstances and despite being devout they are powerless to fend off the external force and so turn inward in fear and confusion. If the witches are real then surely God must be real so why has he forsaken us? What have we done to earn his scorn such that our prayers fall on deaf ears? *We* must have done something wrong. Why do you need to like them care what happens to the whole family on an individual, per character basis? The film isn't meant to make you comfortable. It's discomfort and tension on purpose. Lots of people and indeed lots of families are just unlikeable people, but this is also in the context of a deeply religious family, with all the psychological implications that carries, shunned and isolated from their own community. I would still care on a fundamental human level if a family of otherwise unlikeable people were brutally mauled to death in the wilderness.

I don't really get this take in the case of 2015's The VVitch. The witch is revealed to be real from the start, so the periods between spooky events just feel like a waiting game in which we're reminded how deeply unlikable most the family is. Where is the dread if most of the family is so unlikable that I don't care what happens to them?

The whole mythology of witches as monsters reminded me of a part of a line from Darkest Dungeon where it describes a vampire hunter that hunts people infected with Crimson Curse and those who aren't: "Madness can take many forms, but none so contemptible as man's belief in a mythology of his own making. A world view buttressed by dogmatic desperation invariably leads to single-minded fanaticism, and a need to do terrible things in the name of righteousness" Humanity has always created it's own demons, monsters and horrors to put the blame on something we couldn't understand, in many many forms Also, you earned a subscribe!
@elgatochurro Жыл бұрын
Yes I think it's done to remove the blame from humanity, from humans, it may have started from protecting people you cared about and didn't want them to face the punishment they would have had. Maybe a holy man or noble started it... They'd have the power and influence to not be punished for forcing these beliefs onto others. Witches are drowned, if they survive they're a witch and killed. If they're not a witch, well they're no longer a threat. This was recent. People need to remember that. And we repeat this behavior today on groups we don't like. When the standard method is death regardless, I can see plenty of reason I've might be desperate enough to blame someone else, oh but they might be harmed instead... So something else... I think the most despicable thing about it was the willingness of people to exploit the irrational or mentally ill or traumatised in order to push a fearmongering agenda. I don't think it's coincidence that we're seeing similar accusations now, albeit with slightly fewer supernatural trappings. The video shows how happy the media in the 1980s were to link the threat of occultism to homosexuality - and the desperate search for proof that LGBTQs are in your schools trying to ruin your children's minds is rampant, and coming from much the same people (and in some cases *exactly* the same people). These are often religious people, trying to maintain religion's foothold in society, and believing that the best way to do that is to encourage fear of its absence or opposition. I don't want to sound too cocky - the UK had its own brief brush with Satanic Panic - but it does seem like, the more secular a society, the less likely it is that someone screaming "Witch!" will be taken seriously. And I am very confident that most of those who are happy to platform and amplify those irrational voices are not believers themselves. I think they're far more cynical than we often give them credit for.

On a different note, having been a child who was raised by a parent who professed to have been the victim of satanic ritual abuse, I sometimes think it's ironic that while she was running from perceived demons she was inadvertently doing some of the things to me that she was trying to run away from. Just to give one example, she was paranoid that anyone could be a member of the cult so she isolated herself and inadvertently isolated myself. Isolation is a cult tactic. Being a little triggered at the moment, this video hit a little too close to home, lol, I do wish I had someone to talk to who got it.

Finally caught this after seeing the thumbnail for ages. Succinct, well spoken, altogether delightful and nourishing! The reality that there is no boogieman is a harsh reality for those that take little to no responsibility for their role in life. Fitting, if cruel. I hope in the future, these dynamics have way to play out or shift to something more beneficial to society and others. Also, respectfully, I appreciated seeing Teal Swan here. Wonderful that you touched on the satanic panic. I was in a family that got hit hard by the effects of this in the early 90’s. We were a non-Christian family in a VERY Christian (Lutheran) town. Despite nothing have happened we were harassed by people in town, we were taken away by human services for extended periods while they did investigations. My parents never recovered from the stress and harassment, divorced and moved to separate sides of the country. For this reason I never watch horror movies with witches. They either perpetuate and justify the idiotic fears of people who believe…or they make me relive the trauma brought about from this idiots. Either way it’s unpleasant as all get-out.

Amazing video. The topic of mass hysteria and the psychological release it provides humans is also explored in Satoshi Kon's anime Paranoia Agent. I think analyzing the short series would make a nice companion piece to this great video essay, as it takes many of the points you make about human behavior and presents their machinations at work in a more modern "civilized" setting. I think such a thing would bolster your theme even more. Anyway, amazing work. I've become a subscriber! ^_^

There are two thoughts here that I'd like to isolate for a minute: the scene where one woman explains almost step by step how a super secret ritual is done (and also how she assures her audience that "they probably didn't know that") (10:20) and the moment in your video where you talk about how witch hunts are nowadays kinda seen like an almost exclusively American thing because of media (4:35). My family has always been very... hippie. In the sense that they believe a lot in New Age stuff, like crystals, reiki, and also a whole lot of conspiracies. And one thing I've found out is that a lot of the time they'll display these kinda behaviors where they think they know something that you don't because of the, as you very well said, efficiency of whatever evil thing they're fighting against (nowadays it's "the Elite", but even though they've never been Christians they also talk about the Devil from time to time). And there're times where they'll talk about, for example, "certain component in whatever food" that's brainwashing/killing us, and I recognize they're talking about stuff that literally cannot happen where I live. Because I live in Spain, in Europe, where the EU has explicit laws against that particular practice they are fighting against. Because they got their intel from some translated text from the US. I guess what I'm trying to say is that these very troubling cases can and do spread to the rest of the world, and I thought it was relevant to point out. (And, as always, fantastic video. You gave me the chills and made me think a lot. And also I really value how you talk about people, since I guess I got kinda used to being surrounded by misanthropists!)

Yes! I feel with how America very much dominates media across the world it sorta takes over our own beliefs. My one aunt went down an anti-abortion pipeline due to American youtuber, and wanted to protest against abortions being legal. It was such a bizaar idea because she wanted to go to an "abortion clinic" which don't exist in my country, those procedures are performed in actual hospitals or clinics, alongside other types of medical care. We also pointed out to her that it doesn't matter if she did protest, abortions as a right were protected by the constitution, had been since the 90s,and it would likely never change. We've had similar discussions around drag queens, trans rights, the right to free speech and many other arguments that undoubtably originated in America. It's very bizaar to see how this cross cultural idea exchange changes her view on things that are very different from what she believes them to be. She's so wrapped up in the fevor of what she's been told, she hasn't realised this hysteria is straight up not applicable to her own situation

@@AmeliaMastervally In a way what saddens me the most about this phenomena is that you can't really change their mind?? Like, first of all, they are SUPER convinced. But second: you're in the same place they were before. Everything you tell them is gonna receive an immediate "yeah, I thought like that too. BEFORE I learnt-". In that sense, you are always the one that's brainwashed. And it doesn't help that a lot lot lot of these conspiracy theories and general beliefs (like the anti-abortion rabbit hole) originate from fascist groups; every time you say "this is nazi propaganda", it doesn't matter how well you explain it, the one that sounds insane is gonna be you.

Thank you so much!! I *think* what you're referring to is the Christian imagery associated with past witchhunting, which in this particular case of mass western paranoia about the occult, has always been explicitly framed in matters of Christian ideology, often bastardized to serve a political goal, so I don't think there's really a way to talk about the cause of these things without talking about religion in general and Christianity in particular. I don't think a belief in a higher power is unreasonable, but it's unquestionable that organized religion often veers into superstition, as it has in the various Satanic panics over the centuries, including today in Qanon. I think that would be the case regardless of what the dominant belief structure is, atheism included. I hope this clears things up a little. Anyway, I appreciate your kind disagreement and am glad you're sticking around!!

I really enjoyed this video. We are all so great at pointing out other people's biases, yet fail to see our own. We always think we can look at the world objectively, but keep projecting our own fears and insecurities onto it. Our technological advancements also make us fall for this trap again and again, since we look at history and how far we've advanced so we think: "NOW we know everything. We used to be uneducated fools, but with modern science and technology we've finally escaped and we can now say we know the truth." But of course we don't. There is so much we don't understand or know, so we will repeat the cycle. And future generations will think the same of us, as we think of our ancestors. Great video analysis

This video is excellent. As a Christian myself, I feel like a lot of the panic around Satanic cults and their supposedly supernatural abilities comes down to bad theology, but it's bad theology that is very good at creating an atmosphere of fear and suspicion. Don't get me wrong, I do believe that real demons exist, but more often than not, the fact is, you're right: we look for the demons we want to see. We are so terrified of a life of suffering (which is, as you pointed out, the natural state of the human life) that demons must exist to account for all the suffering therein, even if they are conjured by nothing more than the imagination of the sufferer. The real reasons for all that suffering being as complex as they are--the cyclical nature of violence and victimization, the attempts to justify evil through desperation, and just plain old bad luck, along with a myriad of other causes--makes dealing with them a lot more difficult, and makes the easier answer of "a witch did it" or "a devil did it" or "THEY did it" (there's always another big evil "Them" after all) much more appealing. Of course, the easy answers are rarely satisfying for long, and often lead to more harm than good. All this to say, video gud, smol minecraft man on the internet agrees with you, good job and thanks for the good think
