I get what they were trying to do. They were going for that Fairly Odd Parents tone where the world is a goofy mean spiritied version of our reality that is meant to be unfair to the protagonist. This is a definite example of "interesting idea, awful execution". Having a cartoonist's creations come to life and interact with him (or someone given his brain in this case, I guess?) could make for a really cool concept, something like Who Framed Roger Rabbit without needing copyright permissions, if done right. You could play it for comedy, with a bunch of other people interacting with the cartoons, or play it as a psychological horror drama with only the cartoonist experiencing the cartoons' presence. That concept could have potential, again, if done right. Unfortunately, Out of Jimmy's Head was not "done right".

Okay looking it up Eat At Joe's is making this actually look a lot worse then it actually is. The only supposed full live action series coming is the Degreassi revival and even that will likely not go to CN at all more just HBO Max which since CN is attached to HBO Max's programming sometimes their shows get jumbeled together. Granted there are animated/live action hybrids like Tweety Mysteries coming but I have a feeling since those are also made to air on HBO Max the quality will be higher then that and yeah stuff like Space Ghost Coast To Coast show that good CN Live aciton/animated hybrds can exist even if this is no where near one of them. Speaking of older stuff though I don't really think CN needs to play live action movies at all that have no relation to anything animated that's been going on since even before Re-Animated was a thing that happnes from time to time sadly. Just be glad we're not at the point where CN had like two hours of reruns of goosebumps instead of doing a four hour block of Toonami... yeah that was a thing back in the day I shit you not.

The idea of a kid having imaginary cartoon friends is a novel idea on paper, but the execution here is just so poorly thought out. The cartoon characters are wacky and over-the-top as expected, but the world that Jimmy lives in is just as wacky and over-the-top, so the toons' humor falls flatter than they are (seriously, I've seen KZbin Poops do a better job sticking cartoon characters into other settings). One of the key elements of comedy is _juxtaposition,_ throwing an unexpected element into an already established scenario. Just look at basically any Monty Python sketch. If Jimmy just went to a normal, boring school and had a normal, boring family, that would make his antics with the toons in his head stand out more. Instead, it's just one more dollop of unhinged nonsense in a show already full of unhinged nonsense. Even then, the nonsensical world that Jimmy lives in just doesn't feel "real"; it's too unhinged and incoherent, throwing a bunch of randomness in for randomness's sake like the worst examples of early 2000's Monkeytaco humor, and even then the limitations of both the budgets and reality make even the wackiest bits feel half-baked and restrained. And even if you removed all that, all you'd have left is just yet another boilerplate sit-com school setting with all the usual cliches.
@clayxros5762 жыл бұрын
Honestly, it probably would have been better for the show if the Cartoons were kinda normal (as though their creator were the whacky one and the characters were somewhat forced into crazy scenarios through his writing) and the world itself was whacky. The characters would be trying to help Jimmy, as the world's chaos makes their normally realistic help fall flat. Seeing something in the same vein as Bugs Bunny being very confused at an average joe pulling a hammer out of nowhere, or their Lola analogue's helpful emotional maturity flipped on its head, would be a rather fresh juxtaposition.....and help the animation budget by having the cartoons mostly dodging the chaos.
@hdofu2 жыл бұрын
The concept wasn't a bad treatment... however low budget, terrible writing, unlikeable actors, strangeness for the sake of strangeness make for something that was awful at the time, but reopening it and reexaming it, it's vile rancidness has only gotten stronger. Out of Jimmy's head should be taken as a warning to future writers for shows "Having an original idea that very clearly is a good idea can still be a colossal failure if you don't take the effort to make the writing good, no matter how determined your parent company is determined to make it a hit.

I think I can put Jimmy's Dad as a perfect example of (non-CG/animated) Uncanny Valley. He's essentially a five year old in the body of a grown man in the most literal sense and the way he's depicted is not charming like a manchild in most shows, just in a way that's deeply uncomfortable. I mean, his first scene was laughing at Morning cartoons in his PJ's while dribbling sugary cereal like a toddler. And then there's Enter's examples that shows he has no filter as he spouts whatever comes to mind and has no basic common sense like being incapable to tell the difference between his son and an obviously poorly made robot.
@hanezutchins27862 жыл бұрын
So he's pretty much IRL Timmy Turner's dad except he doesn't show love for his son?
@NobodyC132 жыл бұрын
@@hanezutchins2786 Again, non-CG/animated. Cartoony aesthetics can be done in live-action (Ned's Declassified, Scott Pilgrim, for example), but it takes very careful staging and direction to make it work and look appealing. Every thing Jimmy's Dad does is just creepy, and he has no redeeming qualities. You can't like a character like that. Mr. Turner does have manchild traits but the writers at least made the effort (in the first half of Fairly Odd Parents run) to give him positive traits to balance out the negative ones (like his negligence of leaving Timmy with Vicky): he gives his family homemade (crappy) gifts to show his love, he tries to bond with Timmy on activites like scouts and applied to several "cool" jobs to impress him; and when it's shown Timmy is in clear danger, he doesn't hesitate to go on the offensive.

In my opinion, Out of Jimmy's Head can be seen as an early example of what the failing upwards concept looks like. The movie had an idiotic plot, characters that are mostly unlikable, and animated elements that don't interact well with the live action settings they are in, and yet for some reason the producers/directors of that trainwreck of a movie are given a green light to produce a series that is just as bad.

I actually remembered watching that princess episode when it first came out. The only thing I remembered was that when Sonny went to the princess world, he started grotesquely morphing his body (because the princess world was animated) and that when he refused to sing a song for the woodland animals, one of them bit him which caused Sonny to sing. Aside from that, I guess the only other thing that I remember was that Craig had to fight a dragon to impress a girl or something but that's pretty much it. Looking back, this show was really messed up. I seem to remember REALLY not liking the sexism episode because of how much of an asshole Dolly was to Jimmy. However, I feel that this show could easily be reimagined as a sort psychological horror with MC being trapped in a cold uncaring sitcom world with sadistic animated entities and being put in dangerous scenarios that often end with a laugh track. I feel like that would be a good subversion on the whole "mean-spirited" show cliché.

I have two potential ideas for a rewrite of this show: 1.) A slice of life comedy where Jimmy is an ordinary kid who is trying to make it through school and turns to the characters he has made up for advice (usually in “conversations” he has with them in his room of something like that). 2.) A WFRR style show where cartoons co exist with humans and Jimmy’s characters that he’s created are brought to life one day and stick by him in his daily life, helping him through problems (or getting him into them).

Or even better, Jimmy is an aspiring cartoonist and one day all the things that he created come to life and start to brought chaos in Jimmy's town.
