I miss the days of story telling. My grandpa always had stories and I remember just listening, engaged, interested in every detail. No phones, no internet distraction, just free. I'm only 27 years old and I know that most of my generation can't appreciate story telling or cant be engaged in a conversation without looking at there phones. It makes me sad and helps me remember the times I had with my grandpa.

Two years ago, deer hunting in northern Wisconsin, we could hear them howling back and forth around dawn, which isn't uncommon. However, about 15 minutes later, I heard fast, loud footsteps coming behind my blind. I turned to look, expecting a deer, only to see a wolf trotting about 50' from my blind. I clenched my cheeks and my rifle tight, luckily he went right past me, never paying any attention to me. I'm thinking the howling that morning was this big boy had been separated from his pack and was looking to rejoin them. Regardless, it was a great experience that I'll always remember!
@TheNorthwoodsman16 жыл бұрын
You happened into a great moment. I agree with it being a gathering call. So many times at dusk I will hear just a few calls as they gather for the nights hunt.
@tallcedars23106 жыл бұрын
Really enjoyed your stories Martin, you are a joker, lol. Where we are we have wolves and have been lucky to see them pass close by once while out hiking. We saw it about 70 feet from us & our dog saw it, looked at me with what I interpreted as a scared look, then he sat right down beside me as we watched it go up the bank. It was on a mission with it's mates we found out a few minutes later, but what an experience to see them in real life that close. Every once in awhile we see them here and we stop and just watch each other, cherised moments for sure, all the best to you and family!
@TheNorthwoodsman16 жыл бұрын
You know how special those encounters are and apparently your dog has the proper respect for them too.
@tallcedars23106 жыл бұрын
His reaction totally surprised me as he usually rushes right up to other dogs since he's still puppy like at 1.5 years old and not totally tuned in to dog socializing yet. It was interesting to see his instinct kick in, just hope it works when he sees a bear or cougar:)

Glad to get another video from you Martin! You are so fortunate to have wolf encounters. (safe ones that is) Some say they don't bother people, others say than do, my thoughts are; sure they will in certain situations but I sure hope people don't start "doing away with them because they might". It's sad to me how people move in on the wild life & kill rather than learning how to live with them! I would love to see a wolf in the wild! I love the way they "know" where people are & are keeping "track" of them. Thank you for sharing this Martin, I really look forward to more!!! LOL Judie
@TheNorthwoodsman16 жыл бұрын
The wolves seem to have an extra sense or two. One old logger told me that when you see a wolf it is because the wolf decided to be seen.
@judyjudyjudy95936 жыл бұрын
I have heard that too! I'll bet the wolf are around most of the time checking out what people are up to, when people are in their area. Maybe they like being fairly close to people in case of food being left out, just maybe. You said they never touched the bologna, but checked it out. I would imagine the junk in bologna would repel them. I want to hear lots about things you know or have seen, please keep making these awesome videos, they are just full of the greatest stuff!!! LOL Judie

This a classic example of a life well lived. If you never go anywhere or do anything, and have no memories of time well spent, you have no stories to tell. Except maybe the superbowl ya watched back in 20xx when somebody did whatever. Not my cup of tea, so to speak. I don't get around as much as Martin, but I've had good times and good friends, and have the memories. I plan on making many more.

I've heard them in my part of the Ontario bush more times than I can count but in all my years I've only seen them on two occasions. Both times they were on the frozen lake when we were ice fishing. The fishing wasn't great (few lake trout and some Ling) but the photos we took are hanging throughout the cottage and shed.

The wolf at the end of your video looks like a typical grey wolf. Here in central Ontario adjacent to Algonquin Park, we have the eastern red wolf. A smaller animal and a distinct species. I alway think regarding the amount of food we have to feed our dogs to keep them happy and healthy; imagine that that wolf has to catch it all himself! Coyotes too! You really have to admire the wild canine species! Nice job on the video!

So you cut loose with a howl. I note you were the closer one to the door. I'm surprised Jim did not consider that geometry, considering there's a lock on the door and all. "Uh, Marty? Open the door Marty." "Well now, let's not be too hasty." "Marty? Hasty? Marty, open the door!" "How do I know you're not a wolf? They're pretty wily, y'know." "MARTY!"

Martin, were you alone when you filmed this? Because if you look at your side window in your cabin, there appears to be some kind of light in the upper right hand corner that goes on and off, fades in and out. Just wondering about that light. Love your stories, thanks for sharing them.

Hi Martin, great stuff!! Question: I'm curious why you do not have a dog or two to provide you some company and added security?

I would probably pick up a cat first. I would be too concerned about the dogs safety unless it were really well trained and did not run off at all.
