Bittersweet fact: Sir Ian Holm developed Parkinson’s disease and it got quite nasty. He stopped acting altogether, but Peter Jackson and crew were hoping to have him reprise his role as Bilbo, and he agreed as a favor to Peter, and I like to think he did it for the fans too. He couldn’t fly to New Zealand, so they set up a private studio in London with a small crew and all the time in the world. There, he gave his final performance (I believe this is his last acting job), and one that I think should and can and be appreciated by all. I think he was flawless. RIP Sir Ian Holm.

Just an opinion on this one about why Hobbits don't wear shoes. Firstly, their feet are very tough and resilient, so no need. Secondly, Hobbits are tied to the earth and growing things. Going without shoes keeps them in touch with the earth. A fun bit, Radagast the Brown is played by Sylvester McCoy, who played the 7th Doctor in Dr. Who. Seems fitting that a wizard should be played by the Doctor.
@butkusfan2311 ай бұрын
Please keep in mind that the tone of the Hobbit films is different than TLOTR, and it’s meant to be. The Hobbit book was written with younger kids in mind. That’s why some of the dialogue is sillier, some of the scenes have less blood and less mortal danger, etc, compared to LOTR because the films mirror the tone of the books.
@butkusfan2311 ай бұрын
Also, you can see one of the trolls that turned to stone in Fellowship of the Ring. A nice little callback to the Hobbit story that they put in the film.
@paulkondon10 ай бұрын
Book,singular. LotR was originally one massive tome, but the publisher knew they couldn't market it that way, and forced it to be broken up. The Hobbit was nowhere near that long, as a single book.

I’m sure you probably didn’t mean any offense, and it’s no big deal. Just sayin. 👍
@paulkondon9 ай бұрын
My correction was for other people who aren't familiar with any of the books, and who might also be thinking The Hobbit was a trilogy in the same way The Lord of the Rings was. No offense intended. A major knock of the Hobbit movies was they were too long, and I agree with that. But how do you get Ian McKellen to come back to play a minor background character, which is Gandalf's role in the book? Deus ex machina when the Company gets into trouble that Bilbo can't get them out of. Gandalf's arc in the Hobbit movie is prelude to LotR, mostly in service to LotR movie fans who might not enjoy The Hobbit on its own as a children's story.

The popular theory is dragons catch their bedding on fire if flammable, and metal isn't. The softest metal is gold. It's the best theory I've heard all things considered.
@silversamurai02678 ай бұрын
I mean... all the older stories, pre-How to Train Your Dragon generally had dragons have a fascination with gold to the point of hoarding. (Even if it wasn't gold, they hoarded *something.*) It's always been such a common fact of dragon mythology that, quite honestly, people not knowing about it is strange. Book readers, mythology lovers and fantasy nerds don't even question it, the same way sports fans don't question why people wear "lucky underwear" or the colors of their favorite teams in the hopes that, that will help their team win. It doesn't logically make sense, but it's almost always been that way. I think it's just a sign of how little people read or watch/listen to the older stories nowadays. Dragons hoarding gold is common mythology, just as unicorns being attracted to virgins is. People who don't know these mythological facts simply don't know the fantasy genre *at all.*

Between the two trilogies, "Hobbiton" itself was built (and remains as a tourist destination) in complete, instead of just a simple set front. Several "Hobbit holes" were built and the whole village is there now. The first trilogy, LOTR, there was just some simple fronts set up and a "bagend" hut for filming. New Zealand has become the hobbit destination on the planet.

You know where second breakfast comes from? In the book, Bilbo departs home a bit differently. He doesn’t grab the contract and run off. He sleeps late, thinks he’s off the hook, and is enjoying his “second breakfast” when Gandalf returns to round him up. The movie’s a bit more dramatic. But “second breakfast” is never actually used in the LOTR books, it was one of those things the filmmakers took from The Hobbit in making the LOTR movies - there are a few callbacks like that.

@@TheOctobersReact those movies are an investment in time, emotions, etc. No spoilers, but did y'all know that between the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series movies that there was some stupid drama between New Line and another bigger studio (Paramount maybe?), and all us fans at the time were being teased with *possibly* getting Hobbit movie(s) to follow up the LOTR movies that had already made us all big fans, and that they tried to get someone other than Peter Jackson to direct it? IIRC the little guys won b/c everyone, including the proposed replacement director, refused to do the film without Peter Jackson and WETA (his special effects house). I don't think anything in this universe is going to top the LOTR trilogy, but they did this movie justice and allowed us all to go back to Hobbiton for a while again. As i mentioned during your LOTR videos, while the Hobbit may not be on the same level as LOTR, it still has a lot of character story and emotional moments. Unfortunately, Peter Jackson was heavily rushed at the time he was making these so he was forced to use more CGI than he would've liked. However, i still enjoy the Hobbit trilogy as well. Also, you'll notice quite a few references to LOTR. Keep an eye out for callbacks to this first movie as you get to Desolation of Smaug and Battle/5 armies. As always, if you have any questions about anything or want more clarity on a particular moment etc, feel free to let me know here or on your disc! :) Cheers!

No, he didn't leave it up to the interpretation of the reader. He specifically stated, in more than one place, that pipeweed is tobacco. Gandalf chose Bilbo for being in the family lineage of the Tooks, which you noted Pippin is a direct descendant of. ("Fool of a Took!" As in, of all your noble family lineage, you sir, are the fool in the family.) There were two Tooks who were Companions of Gandalf, to borrow a Dr. Who reference. As in, Gandalf swept in, picked up one of the Tooks as a Companion, went on a (series of) adventures with them. Bilbo's mother was named Belladonna Took, and she was the ninth child of 'the Old Took', Gerontius. Bilbo's grand-dad. Old Took was a former Companion of Gandalf. And Old Took's grandfather was a Companion of Gandalf in his day. So we have a pattern where every other generation, Gandalf comes and grabs a Took and goes on an adventure. Bilbo was the best Took bloodline for the job. So Gandalf made him his Companion, and in doing so, eventually defeated Sauron.

You said this film was a "prequel" and while I concede that this is a prequel to the LOTR movies, The Hobbit was not written as a prequel to the LOTR books. Lord of the Rings is a sequel to The Hobbit. It matters that The Hobbit was written first. This film's desperation to associate itself with the original trilogy is it's biggest downfall. Let’s just say even further back there were a race of beings known as the petty dwarves. They weren’t dwarves in the sense we know them. They were the first things elves encountered and these petty dwarves were hostile and so when eventually they came across dwarves after their forefathers woke up and long after they had their own long lineages, thought they were the petty dwarves and killed them on sight. This was not long before or after Men came into the scene and were discovered by Galadriel’s brother Finrod Felagund(Felagund is the name given to him by the dwarves. They physically Created the fortress of Nargothrond). He and his youngest sister were great friends with the dwarves long before Gimli and Legolas was ever born!

So you see Thranduil the elf king refuse to help the dwarves when Smaug(pronounced Sm ow g)attacked. This is why Gimli distrusted and didn't like Legolas at the beginning of Fellowship Of The Ring!
@Ciffer-199811 ай бұрын
they really did a poor way of showing why did Thranduil act the way he does and because of that thru the all of the movies he just seem like an asshole

They’re fine. Lovely in different parts. But having to invent stuff beyond the book for 2 extra movies really doesn’t work very well. Should have just put more source material stuff into it from LOTR books which are huge including Silmarillion etc. they already had that feeling going for them in the beginning of The Hobbit and throughout other parts within this series of films

All the wizards are basically what Moses spoke to in the desert when he saw the Burning Bush. Humans do not have magical powers in this world with some extra small exceptions. This explains Gandalf's voice when he's angry. Doesn't it sound divine?
@Ciffer-199811 ай бұрын
dosnt he just speaks black speach or the language of Mordor, cant remember the exact name, also here wizards are not humans so they do have a magic just that they are not meant to use it, there is also a part where they are nerfed for the sake of the story since both Saruman and Gandalf could wipe each others forces singlehandedly but that wouldnt be fun so they are nerfed down to old mans with sticks and wise words

Love your energy ! Hope you both get to react to the fun behind the scenes documentaries that were made for both LOTR and The Hobbit. Many channels are soon to do this since I’ve been working closely behind the scenes myself with other channels who wish to check them out reaction style since they loved the movies so much and wished to become part of the “fandom” we didn’t use that word before until all the games and movies and books came out they were all inspired by Tolkiens works and by extension. Big time was Peter Jackson and his giant team that brought it all to life.

the lord of the rings is a fantasy novel. dark and serious Hobbit is a tale for children. written before LOTR. So that's why it feels different.
@55tranquility10 ай бұрын
I'm a huge Tolkien fan and I like the Hobbit Trilogy. LOTR is a masterpiece of cinema, it is pretty much impossible to top. The Hobbit is a much shorter book, one that was written by Tolkien as a childrens book - so it would be very hard to make into a full movie, it would be 20 minutes long! So I understand why they had to add things, I do think they went a bit too far adding things that were actually impossible and don't make sense according to Tolkiens writings - but I can live with that. I love all the books, but any return to Jacksons Middle Earth is amazing - and literally give me The Hobbit over the utter catastrophe of Amazons Rings Of Power - that basically stamped on Tolkiens grave!

Your comparing of the GOT dragons to middle earth Dragons is interesting. In GOT, the dragons have some intelligence, but are essentially wild animals that can sometimes be trained to be ridden, and to do good and bad. They are not inherrently good or evil. In middle earth, the dragons were created by the first dark Lord Morgoth and are even more intelligent than in GOT, but are evil. Hence Smaug wrecking Dale and conquering Erebor and claiming the treasures within - not because he needed to, but because he was greedy and evil.
