Totally agree with your philosophy of using scraps immediately. The other thing that’s helped me a lot is sticking to just a few of my favorite color-ways when buying new fabric. This way I can easily integrate my scraps in with my new fabrics. If I want to buy something that won’t integrate with my existing stash, I only buy enough for a specific project and immediately use the scraps like you’re suggesting.

I am new to your channel and just love it! Great info and no more words than. Needed. Also wonderful is that you credit other great quilting You Tube channels when you like their content. I am blasting through your videos and have enjoyed them all. I can’t wait until the Chip Off the Old Block pattern is available again!

"How do you keep scraps out of your scrap heap? Don't put them in...I kept sewing until them were all used!" Brilliant words to live by. This will be my new mantra!! Thank you so much. 🥰🤩

It is true that people will love your scrappy quilts. I liked both of the final scrap quilts - If you actually don't want to put those leftover pieces back into your stash, you could definitely just piece those pieces for backings for both of them. I'm amazed how people are willing to piece the smallest and most intricate pieces on the front of their quilts, but when you suggest even putting two seams into a backing, they act horrified (not you - just in general).

I remember as a new quilter, I thought I needed just about every ruler demoed! Thankfully, I have a BFF who reeled me in!! No one needs a new ruler for every pattern. I learned to FIRST look at the rulers I have on hand to see if they will work just as well. Most of the time I find they do! Thank you Maureen for another very helpful video!! You not only inform us on superb quilting but also look after our pocketbooks as well!💕🧵

I really like both of the quilts. There are rulers I bought years ago, that I never use. The 6x24, square up rulers and flying geese are the ones I go to. It’s hard to believe that a year has pass since your first vlog. Glad I found you. Congratulations

I love the way you think! I've found so often anything I stuff back into my bins sits there forever, no more useful than if I tossed it in the trash. Finding a way to use it right away is a great idea. I try to use scraps in my quilt backs because the colors already coordinate. Test blocks and leftover blocks work great that way too.

Thank you, Maureen for another great video, hard to believe it has been a year already!! I started out with the same three rulers you've recommended. Getting used to those basic rulers and everything they can do is important IMO, before moving on to buying more tools. Once I learned what type of cuts were difficult for me, I could analyze which rulers to buy that would actually be a help.

Thanks so much about the information on rulers. One sees so many that my head spins and wish you could try one out at the store before buying one, but it's not possible. Your opinions for the most part are right on the money, they all make so much sense. Congratulations on the 1st year anniversary. You have taught me so much esp looking at a pattern and seeing different ways to put it together ❤️. Please continue to teach us.

thank you for your kind words. At our shop we do let people try our rulers out before buying. We have them open and use them, why not let the customers try before you buy.

After the 6x24, I’d get a shorter/narrower ruler like 4x18 or so. It’s easier than the big for cutting smaller pieces. I don’t find my square rulers as useful because I can cut squares with these rulers and I find the square rulers kind of bulky. But, that’s MY opinion, lol. Love your videos!

I have many rulers. I do have a 3 1/2" by 18" and 6" by 12" I use both often but for new quilters I think they would come after the others.

My second ruler was a 2.5"x 8" and it's still one of my most used rulers, for subcutting strips and for cutting HSTs, etc.

You are so right about rulers! I've wasted so much money buying the same ruler by different names. I recently bought a Quilter's Select ruler as so many said they're wonderful. I hate it! It doesn't move easily and so it's difficult to reposition. Only, only buy what you need. Olfas are good but do not have a non slip surface. Creative Grids are wonderful but at times confusing to use (that is the straight rulers). I do love Deb Tucker and all things Tuckerized. I would only buy her rulers for flying geese and any other special shapes. But again, start small and only buy what you need. I would include the Folded Corner Clipper as a must have- learn how to use it for bindings (you're welcome) :) If I had one piece of advice for a new quilter it would be to buy fabric and then use it! Don't add to a 'stash'. Your tastes will change if you do and then you'll be left with a ton of fabric that you don't like. I've given so much away and still will not outlive what I have plus I always find something new. Anyway, have seen all your videos. Glad your viewer numbers are increasing. You look better and better (working on it?). I don't need anything so not trying to win anything :) Thank you for all you do!

Congrats on your first year! Looking forward to many more informational videos! Found I was making a lot of HSTs, so I splurged on a BlocLoc 6 1/2”. It works for smaller sizes, so didn’t waste money on littler ones. Has saved lots of frustration!

I don't think a new quilter should start with all the specialty rulers and papers etc until they've made a quilt and really understand how it's done. Glad you pointed them in the direction of basics first. (Now if you could just suggest a cereal box and a pencil. I know, I know.😄) So many post that something is wrong and they don't know how to fix it. Of course, they don't... They just followed blindly and never really understood the process. And why do so many say they can't wait to be finished? What happened to the joy of creating it? Just my opinion.

Just found your channel. As for upcoming questions: how do find a reliable long-arm quilting service? I like the design and sewing process, but I really struggle with the quilting. I’d do more projects if I could find a trustworthy service to finish them off.

I would ask quilting friends. Do you belong to a guild? See who quilts any auction/fundraising quilts they make. With a new long armer I would give them something small that I do not care so much about and see how he/she does. One of the first quilters I used the stitching was so awful I ripped it all out.

One thing that I would add when buying rulers is to see if you can work with all the measurement lines. I have a hard time seeing through all the line clutter that I stick with Quilters Rule rulers. They have basic lines that make it easy for me to read.
