There's a lot of things I like about winter hiking and camping more than summer. Its very quiet, you can hear the snow hit the ground and trees, there's more places to set up a tent, you don't have to worry about a camp fire or stove setting the forest on fire, there's less people, you can see all the cool animal footprints clearly. Ice does weird stuff. I just came back yesterday from a snow trip where there was these huge ice crystals everywhere, all over the ground. And if you can't stand the heat and humidity of summer, winter camping is for you!

What a fun video. Brought back old memories. The land and trees and hills were gorgeous. My memories of Winter snow, beauty and trees comes from skiing with my Dad. He put me on skis at a very young age. So young I put myself on my skis between his skis and wrapped my little arms around his long tall legs. This worked 😊 till I grew tall enough to reach the rope tows. ❤❤❤LOVED LOVED IT, SKIED into my 60s till knee surgeries needed.

Snowshoes: No cheap ones! In these conditions they may work. But conditions can get really harsh quickly. And then demands on material rise. Here's an example of another youtuber from the Bavarian Forest who had trouble with cheap snowshoes borrowed from a friend. Luckily he could do an improvised repair with paracord: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raaXnpycmNxkorM&ab_channel=BackpackerWilderness

I hope one day I get well off eniught to get an RV, heck I'd be happy With a van. If worse comes to worse I'll camp in a car before I stop camping. Signed Vicki Carnes

We already know Luke's persistent fortitude and skills; I was impressed, Luke, that you seemed to "drag" your feet while hiking in front of Susie, making it easier for her...what a stud! Yes, I noticed the trail break foot shuffling too. Good job. Hunting Colorado I always cut a walking stick to steady myself. I tried a trekking pole but a couple of times I forgot it and had to backtrack to find it. If I'm packing out 100 pounds of meat I cut two poles and still have to be careful in the rocks and brush. I notice you never use one.

With that dramatic music, this needs to be a longer docu-drama. "How do we survive it?" You'll never find another Suzie. I looked for a hiker partner for 30 years, and in 20 years, he taught me all he knew. 💝💘💘💝 Then he crossed the raibow bridge to hike with our past dogs. I'll meet him down the trail. Have pictures in thick snow like that! I always used to say, "Lead me gently."

Just returned from an adventure in Roan Highlands in the snow. Temps in teens and high winds. A couple of game changers included micro spikes, trekking poles with large snow baskets, snow shoes & chemical warmers for gloves, drying socks/boots overnight & warming sleeping bags. A UCI candle raised the inside dew point and knocked down condensation. Also the AT weather app for the latest snow updates. Proper prep and planning made for a memorable and fun 40 mile adventure from Indian Grave Gap to 19E. Winter wonderland in the highlands.

Don't know your normal winter pattern, but cross country skiing really makes moving in snow not such a chore. Not the skinny skies meant for use in laid tracks. The ones we used are much wider and are meant for what you are doing. Snow shoes are a heavy work load in snow above about 8". Skiing in virgin snow can be tough at times, but you rotate the person breaking trail and can travel about twice the distance. There are different methods for going uphill and all of them have their issues. We used smooth skies and just stopped to put a bit of softer wax for going uphill. Or, if it got too steep, we had climbers that are a material that has fibers that lay down and glide going forward but stick up a bit and prevent backsliding on steep terrain. You are made out of the stuff that isn't afraid of new challenges. You just might love cross country skiing backpacking. Great attitude, and hope things find you well. Peace.

Have come across a couple your videos over the past couple months. Watched with great pleasure, now subbed. This video in the snow is so cool. The pair of you on video just seem to work together so well. Keep up the hood vids and all the best to you both

That's the tent you used on another snowy two or three nights if I remember. Wow, those trees are beautiful. I hope Luke offered to carry a little of your gear Susie. ;0)

Bring out condensed milk for when snow gets real deep and heavy to trek through - it gives you instant long lasting energy to burn. You need to think about getting some walking poles too, they make trekking at least 20% easier.

And a polk sled for all the gear. It’s easier with that amount.

#suggestion: try out YakTrax which are quickly removable mini-crampons. The pair probably weighs 1/4 lb, and the stow or clip to your bag. very nice for giving a little bit of confidence when the snow is slippy, but not deep enough for snowshoes.
