Lucasfilm Games and EA are slated to release a ton of New Star Wars Games including, Jedi Fallen Order 2, Kotor Remake, Star Wars Eclipse, Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga, a Star Wars FPS and more. Yet there remains one big lingering problem that has a lot of Star Wars fans concerned. Where are the Multiplayer Star Wars Games? Why are they absent, and what does it mean for Star Wars Games if there are none in the future? We discuss it all!

I disagree. These days, multiplayer AAA games are plagued with issues that are NOT GOOD for gamers. Microtransactions, games as a service, "a sense of pride and accomplishment", etc etc. Once we establish a good repertoire of detailed, feature-rich single player adventures, then there will be more room for multiplayer. But looking back over the last decade, every single SW game released has been basically multiplayer-only except for fallen order. SW Squadrons doesn't count as that was really half of a campaign built around a multiplayer game.

Agreed, multiplayers dominated for a long time, and we had no single player star wars games. Now, the pendulum is swinging back to balance. I personally will never ever play a multi player game, because I have never found them entertaining. But I will invest a lot of money into single player games that have quality stories and engaging gameplay. That's just my opinion

I completely agree. You want to know why there is no Star Wars Multiplayer games? Blame EA, and the dimwits at Lucasarts that let EA have the IP solo for so long. The battlefront games have been a joke. All style with no substance. Then you ad in the hideous ammounts and different kinds of Microtransactions that would make FIFA player get excited, cause they are idiots, and then you are left with only 2 games in the past decade from Star Wars that was worth a damn. And that was Fallen Order and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. Fallen Order was amazing, and I can't wait for the 2nd. SWOTOR, I pick up from time to time and have a ton of fun with. Now do I hope there is one in the future, sure. But, when it comes to Star Wars it has always been the RPG or Single Player game that i've waited for.

So as someone who likes single player games, I always like to see games with interesting stories regardless of it being scripted or player’s choice. That’s the main love for those types of single player games. Being able to control more characters in one game would be a great boost to single player games but people to me seem to hate that which doesn’t make sense. If CoD, Battlefield, Halo, or even Assassin’s Creed could make a single player game but with multiple characters to access in a coop campaign, I would be sold immediately.

Lego Star Wars the skywalker saga is the game for you my friend. Star Wars, tons of characters (although I get most are similar, there are many different combat styles), open world, multiple planets, can fly in ships. Just glorious, but I get some people won’t like it because it’s Lego, not a problem for me though I find it funny

I feel like you're missing a key part of this argument. Over the last 10 or so years the majority of Star Wars games have been multiplayer, so people have been waiting for these single player, crafted experiences. Also the last multiplayer Star Wars game, Squadrons died in less than a year, so what's the point in releasing a game that people aren't gonna play.

Have u guys seen the state multiplayer games recently Im very happy were going back single player games remember the early to mind 2000, the single player games are goated assassins creed, god of war, halo(story), kotar, kotar 2, gears of war(story), diablo, devil may cry, watch dogs, elder scrolls, dark souls and far cry to name a few I get multiplayer is huge know and we need them but these new generations are missing out on amazing stories to dive into and get a instant connection to the main characters struggles and the heart breaking decision to save a friend or save the galaxie these are the games we need know because there games we never forget

Yeah, I’m with you on that. The single player games are by no means a bad thing. And I grew up with a lot of the games you mentioned. AC, Halo, and Gears being among my favorites. But I think it’s definitely fine to have the best of both worlds with the single player games and something like a Battlefront 3 getting regular updates and add-ones after launch. Continued service for something like 3-5 years then on to the next.

No, it's not. Jedi: Fallen Order is still the only recent single-player Star Wars game. Jedi II is coming, but the KOTOR remake is years away, and Eclipse even further. We still don't know if the Ubisoft game is single-player or multiplayer.

Haven't seen the video but my problem with star wars games is: - 1 developer only making them, meaning takes forever and missing out on other potential great star wars games - they're scared to make epic games like an Open World style or a Dark Souls style (Jedi Fallen Order copied Sekiro), - fucking don't worry to make the games canon, just make them fun! Give us battlefront 3 set in the Old Republic Era

I’m okay with SOME games being non canon. I actually love how Fallen Order’s story connected with so many elements ranging from Clone Wars to Rebels, etc. Even BF2’s campaign felt cool with how it intertwined with the aftermath of ROTJ. It just feels more immersive, personally.

I need both single player and multiplayer. It can’t just be multiplayer. I’ve blocked a lot of cheaters in BF2. It really makes multiplayer an unattractive platform. If you can’t play without cheating, you’re a piece of work that I’d rather not be forced to deal with.

When people say 'multiplayer', they often mean head-to-head shooters like Battlefront, but I think a co-op adventure holds just as much potential. DND is so popular because it's friends having deep adventures together, and having a story on the scale of Force Unleashed or Fallen Order would work just as well with two Jedi as it would with one.

I would indeed love CO OP Star Wars games. I love CO OP in general, and I love Star Wars. Mix the 2, and I have my game of the year lol. Ive actually always wanted Kotor to have a mod that allows you to have friends instead of the companions, or just give one,slot to a friends character and the other to a companion. Would be SO GOOD!

Co-op games are awesome, and have a great replay value. I even still see 2p, and 3p maps getting hosted for warcraft 3 campaign in the custom games list. People will replay them, especially if there is some kind of online community to play with

I personally don't give a flying crap about multiplayer games, BUT... they NEED to exist. You can't leave a massive chunk of gamers completely behind. Battlefront 3 would go a LONG way to appease... well... both crowds actually (especially if they added Galactic Conquest), but there's loads of other multiplayer games they could do. And yes, The Old Republic is still around, but the last update sucked and it's also getting up there in age. The problem is... most multiplayer games are horrifically, predatorily monetized. Star Wars fans have shown they won't put up with that. Also, the revenue from "Live Service" games doesn't actually go back into game development. It lines the pockets of the CEOs and shareholders. Live Service games are often a disaster. Battlefront 2 was a RARE break from that pattern, though it started out just as bad or worse even than most others.

I think it's too early to say that every upcoming Star Wars is single player only. The Ubisoft game is being developed by the same studio behind The Division and it's sequel, so the odds of it being a live service multiplayer game are pretty decent. And the non Battlefront FPS is guaranteed to have some kind of multiplayer, whether it's co-op or competitive. And while EA may not be interested in a Battlefront 3, I don't think Lucasfilm Games will let the series go and will probably find a new (and hopefully better) developer to carry the Battlefront torch forward.

For years publishers/developers shoehorned multiplayer into their games (and with it MTX, gambling and P2W) while cheaping on the story and obsessively adjusting gameplay because they had to prioritize balance over fun. And now, with said publishers getting the message after the success of JFO and FINALLY dropping the mindset of "nobody wants a singleplayer game", people want to go back?

A multiplayer player game has not came out for like 5 years and none have been announced. So yes it is the big problem. If you have no new mp games coming and your most popular one is not being updated, you will lose a large amount of fans.

Multiplayer games are cursed with terrible monetization systems. I really would rather stick with single player games like fallen order, or maybe expand it to co-op. But not multiplayer that will be plagued with trolls, microtransactions and just really bad design.

Hey ozzyjedi, you gotta understand that we are literally living through a completely oversaturated market of online only and online aspect games. The way EA sees it its not a massive loss to lose Star wars games, namely battlefront 2 because simply it has no other competitors in that class of game. Its solely unique. Whereas battlefield has to contend with call of duty every single year and if they don't then they fall behind more and more. So taking that into consideration; if people are left hanging for 6 months to the next 4 years for the next online multiplayer star wars game, when we do get it eventually, everyone whos a star wars fan that plays videogames is going to buy it, simply because theres nothing else to compete against that type of game, this is exactly how EA is thinking and they know they're not going to lose out on it regardless. Theres that whole factor ^ and also the fact that things come in and out of demand, im 26 and been a sw fan and videogamer for life and we've seen single player games hit their peak from the 90's to '10's and multiplayer games hit their peak from '11's to now. We're simply dipping back down the single player rabbit hole again. I for one have no interest in playing multiplayer games anymore, besides star wars because its combining my 2 great passions but look if battlefront 3 takes another year or two, at this point, so be it. No use complaining or getting angry at something we cant control, when we know EA is the dirtiest and grubbiest videogame company to date. Enjoy some good single player content coming up the next few years, especially lego star wars the skywalker saga, defs picking up my copy tonight and just chillaxing, reminiscing the days of playing through lego star wars 1 on ps2

Probably most of the people will disagree with me, but don't think we need a star wars multiplayer game like Apex or any battle royale games. Star wars doesn't need battle royale, it needs something different and special like the ground and space battles that we're waiting for more than a decade ago. Not many games have done that, but battle royale is included in almost every multiplayer game and it's just boring for me. A studio that would make a battle royale star wars game have probably never heard the tragedy of Battlefront 3, the cancelled. They could also do battle pass and paid DLCs. Maybe it would be "outrageous" for star wars fans, but it would solve the problem of the studios not getting profit from the game.

The problem that ended battlefront 2 on my opinion is the lack of content and the lack of new heroes and the lack of clone wars content I get that they were really focused on battlefield but come on we had that game in 2017 they should have just had at least some more stuff for battlefront 2 like for the last hero’s they give us soccer balls like really they were missing so much like mace windu and jango fett and mando and savage opress and Ahsoka and ventress but I guess we will have to wait until another developer makes a battlefront 3 or something multiplayer

The main thing that bugs me about battle passes is that they only lend themselves to competitive players that play the game every day for hours. Casual players or people that only have time to play on the weekend have no chance of keeping up

I absolutely LOVE single-player story games. I am 100% for this for our Star Wars games. Although, you do bring up a good point about having just one good multiplayer game that would fix this problem. My cousin and I had an idea for a really cool Star Wars multiplayer game. Rember Galactic Conquest back on PS2 Battlefront 2? Imagine picking an era, then picking a faction, then engaging in an ongoing live service galactic scale war of which faction will occupy more planets to win that season's war.

Basically like Skyrim but Star Wars, you don’t even have to be “the chosen one” or anything, just the ability to build an overpowered force-sensitive (or not) character in the Star Wars universe. And honestly Skyrim would be a good base for such a thing (different species which Star Wars has plenty of) as well as skill trees or progression of a similar nature; take planet hopping and space travel methods from a game like star citizen, etc. the methods exist. All we need are people who have the time and want to make a badass Star Wars game.

Having a balance of single and multiplayer games would be ideal for Star Wars and as you stated keep both players satisfied. Considering the fact EA is no longer the major figure controlling Star wars gaming, their remains the possibility of multiplayer games coming out. For some reason though there is a failure to recognize just how much potential their is. I’m not upset about getting single player SW games, but they can only offer so much of an experience until you complete them. Then you are filled with an emptiness which can only be filled by the next game. Something a multiplayer fulfills with a continuous effort to progress, and lasts until the next multiplayer… or the company no longer sees it as profitable and cuts off live service. Yeah, I’m still salty about Battlefront 2.

What I would love to see as multiplayer games: 1) An RTS with multiple factions, with multiple eras. Old Republic VS Sith, prequel era, rebellion era. Each with a separate campaign and the option to play any of them in a multiplayer match. Add the different smaller factions as well, like Mandalorians or the Hutt criminal syndicate. Let's simplify it: an Age Of Empires rip-off, in the Star Wars world. 2) Jedi Knight Reborn. Multiplayer only, optional battles with Jedi and non-Jedi matches. Maybe even a new story with co-op option. 3) All-era fighter pilot simulator, no story, just all fighters from all era and all factions, from the Naboo N-1 to the Old Republic era Buzzard fighters. 4) A co-op version of KOTOR, but set in a century not shown yet in games, like the conquest of Skerre Kaan (the age of Darth Bane). The twist for that: the story changes based on choices, like the Dark Pictures games by Supermassive. The fight method would change as well, more action-based. Like the acrobatics of Jedi Academy attached to the skill tree of KOTOR. 5) Star Wars-ized Elder Scrolls. 'nuff said. One game for single player, one for multiplayer. Just a few ideas.

Personally the reason I want single player over mp is that these days they only care about the profit putting in predatory monetization like microtransactions, battle pass, FOMO, where everything has be the the "forever game" where everything is designed to want you to spend money. The problem with this idea is every Star wars game that has been releasing for the past decade has been pretty bad at launch. Until they can actually make consistently good launch titles the player base isn't going to stick around.

For me, single-player works best on games that have a very focused and somewhat personal gameplay storyline _(Jedi: Fallen Order_ and the _Uncharted_ games come to mind). But something like _Battlefront 2,_ where the whole point of the gameplay is to just engage in a full-scale battle, does warrant multi-player.

I say they should make a 50 dollar game that is multiplayer, but you create your own jedi/sith and slowly have to upgrade your character from winning duels against other people. You should also be able to have a choice with the upgrades (like lighting or extra defense) and something similar with a star ship battles. Then make a single player storyline kinda like how cod with the single player and multiplayer games in one game.

Why not? There is a reason why the PT is as loved as it is by a lot of younger people, and that's becuase of the extra content that released after the movies that went from them being a bit of a cringey mess, to a good part of the lore. The ST can, and will get the content eventually.

You know there's a live service multiplayer Star Wars game out right now that still gets updates. It's called Star Wars: The Old Republic. What you seem to want is another Battlefront.

I know this would be a gigantic effort and take many years to make but the ultimate Star Wars game I feel would be a massively open world multiplayer experience (with single player elements I’ll explain) set exclusively on Coruscant to start with and potentially have DLC planets later added but to start, focus on Coruscant. The whole planet would be extremely open world with many underground levels deeper into the planet (expanding on what 1313 could have showed) including having hundreds/thousands of side quests, npc’s, co-op missions, PVP/PVE arenas around the city, black markets (for guns, explosives, ships/ship parts, accessories, valuables,etc) trading, currencies, skill tree’s, daily/weekly/monthly missions etc. You can customise your characters species from all species thinkable with clothes and addons. The game would have no affiliation to Jedi/Sith or force powers/abilities involved except maybe on the black market you could acquire a lightsaber for an extremely high price or find/do as a rare Easter egg. There is no campaign, you explore Coruscant, customise and upgrade a ship (so maybe dogfight inside Coruscant could be involved or in space outside the planet??) and have a choose to buy/sell house/apartment. Go at it solo or play with friends online and maybe have clans for multiple players involving having clan bases where you can keep stashes of loot like ARK Survival evolved and can get raided by other players/clans. (Overall might mean maybe having different servers for single player and multiplayer or not?) Also would be able to start a crime underworld with other players including leaderboards or incentives/bounties to spy/steal/track/kill other players/clans. LMK what you think???? I’ve thought about this for nearly 2 years. I think it would be amazing and if done right with DLCs or just with an active live service it could span many years. Also lmk what name you’d call this type of game?

Right now we're stuck with mediocre SWTOR that uses an out of date archaic tab-targeting combat system which makes you give up on the game halfway through even though the storyline is great. I'd say The new Star Wars online game desperately needs dynamic, fluid and responsive action combat. Take a look at 2003 Jedi Knight series lightsaber combat, as it still is the best lightsaber combat even for today's standards. They could easily base the lighsaber portion of the combat on Jedi Knight series and the shooting part could be based off on battlefront. Basically all of this which I mentioned above + FULLY OPEN WORLD + best features of Star Wars Galaxies (sandbox, flying space combat, professions, crafting, etc) + best features of swtor (storyline, pve content) and you'll literally get the best Star Wars game ever.

The RTS section of Star Wars has always given us good games and the irony is that most of them are rip off of other games or have major influences of other games. Empire at War which was influenced by Command and Conquer because it was done by the same guys. Galactic Battleground which is Age of Empires II and Force Commander which originally wanted to be a Starcraft clone.

I think a paid DLC for battlefront 2 with bucketloads of features, updates and bug fixes / balancing would absolutely rock. Lots of people would come. Disney, EA etc need to really expand their horizons. You can only go so far with the standard star wars story arc of good guy beats bad guy. Id really love a game where you have complete control of who you are and what you do. Something like fallen order but fully open worlds and galaxies and no "on a track" gameplay. Fully in control of light or dark side, empire or rebels, pirates or citizens. Also the games and shows and movies really REALLY need to change up the overall tone. I want a brutal gritty star wars, the kidification of everything is forcing them into a corner. You can only make so many stories about the same thing before it gets boring and people stop playing

Sure it's missing but I'm not sure it's a loss. Yes Star Wars multiplayer games are rare but both EA Battlefront games were disappointments. They were beautiful to look at but not necessarily fun to play especially compared with the original Pandemic Studios Battlefronts.

Basically like Skyrim but Star Wars, you don’t even have to be “the chosen one” or anything, just the ability to build an overpowered force-sensitive (or not) character in the Star Wars universe. And honestly Skyrim would be a good base for such a thing (different species which Star Wars has plenty of) as well as skill trees or progression of a similar nature; take planet hopping and space travel methods from a game like star citizen, etc. the methods exist. All we need are people who have the time and want to make a badass Star Wars game. That said. The fact that Star citizen exists, should be enough to convince anyone that basically a version of it that is Star Wars with a Skyrim skill progression method.

I just want a star wars multiplayer game that's heroes vs villains but a full triple-a game. Almost like For Honor or Overwatch, but star wars. In depth lightsaber combat, unique abilities and lots of customization, and different game modes like capture the flag, domination, and TDM. In Battlefront 2, heroes vs villains was by far my favorite mode and I had probably 1,000 hours in that mode alone. I genuinely think a star wars full heroes vs villains game would be my dream game.

Respawn is currently working on 3 different Star Wars games, Fallen Order is obvious but of the other 2 one is an FPS and the other is a Strategy game, both of which might/probably will have multiplayer. Also there's been no confirmation that there won't be multiplayer functionality in Ubisoft's Open World game

No, the real problem is the fact that these games always takes place during the events of the 9 movies are always going to have *NO IMPACT & LEAD TO NOTHING* just so the movies can happen. There are narrative restrictions that prevent the writers from breaking the conventional Star Wars mold & doing something that's truly narratively groundbreaking & or anything too creative with it.. Basically if the game takes place at any point during or around the events of the movies your characters significance will always be reduced to second fiddle by either the *Pod racing Slave Child, Moister Farming teenager or the Orphan Scavenger Teenage girl..* The games always being Narratively Shackled to the events of the movies greatly reduces (if not completely destroys) the game dev's creative freedom to truly put out any truly unique Star Wars content.. 😒

I think that Respawn and Ubisoft should be kept for the single player story games and EA should find a new developer to take on a Battlefront 3 of some sort (doesn't have to be an exact Battlefront 3, just a similar big multiplayer title)

Yeah I agree with your points. Multiplayer is key for Star Wars games to have a future. It also helps out content creators like yourself a ton with content from one game that can last years if updated properly. It's disappointing to see that single player games are the direction SW games are taking because it leaves out a huge multiplayer player base.

Star Wars games have been dominated by multiplayer games these last few years. The only full single-player experience is Jedi: Fallen Order. Not to mention that multiplayer games these days are always full of anti-consumer practises, such as microtransactions. And, even when they have a campaign it's short and not nearly worth the 60$ asking price. Even the DLC discriminates against single-player gamers.

Not to be mean, but until Fallen Order came out there was only multiplayer games. That meme you referenced used to be the other way around, that being said if they could get one solid multiplayer live service game and keep it going that would be great. Problem is, even if they nail it they have to manage to keep it fresh and interesting. There are several games out there, that because they rely on live service and aren't changing it up enough, or are changing up the service in a way that players want / need, are really starting to suffer, and I think that would happen with a star wars game after a few years of it being out.

I don't understand why we can't get a single player game like Fallen Order 2, and not have like a coop mode or maybe a dedicated pvp dueling mode in arenas like the old jedi knight series. What is wrong with a game being singleplayer with a separate multiplayer component that you can still charge a premium for? If they make a new type of star wars game, make a multiplayer mode for it (Think open world singleplayer Star Wars, but the multiplayer is like awesome podracing that you could only do once or twice in the sp storyline but are encouraged to do as the mp mode).

If ea or anyone was smart they would make battlefront 3 now, well not now because that's unrealistic but in the next couple years because of the star wars shows and content right now, it would have so much potential with the amount of new characters and skins for already existing characters from these shows. Star Wars Battlefront should have been a Dice Battlefield style game but Star Wars like the OG games were. The problem with Dice Battlefront games is bc they didnt want to make the game like Battlefield which was the dumbest decisions

I've never heard of anyone asking for more multiplayer star wars games. The series strives in the single player story-based style. The only way Battlefront helped in the sales of Fallen Order was that people thought Battlefront 2 was so bad that they sere hopeful for Fallen Order as a last hope. Not saying that we couldn't use a single good online Star Wars game, but it is most definitely not needed, and shouldn't be a focus on Star Wars developers.

yeah singleplayer games are good because they are alot less effort to play, they are addicting and have a very interesting plot plus they are modable like look at empire at war, its player base it pretty good for a game over 10 years old because it is mainly singleplayer and mods have made it the best star wars game out there
