Wood Turning The Cool Vase

I used a very beautiful piece of English Walnut to make this vase.
From the other pieces I have turned I expected it to be drier than it was.
I started by mounting it on a wood worm screw.
It was very wet but it all worked out in the end.
Getting it down to 1/4" walls helped and I did have to let it sit because of other things going on. I put a plastic bag on when I finished for the day.
I used Zinsser Seal Coat and Minwax Wipe On Poly for the finish.
I then used Acks Sanding Paste and Acks Polish Restoring paste for a very nice finish.

Oh, Gary! What a magnificent piece of wood. One of the great privileges of being a turner. Now about your toolwork - just as magnificent. For me, half of the enjoyment in your videos is careful attention to how you apply your tools. What a great job. As for the wet wood? Scared the stuffing out of me. All of us have so much more wet wood that the stuff that has seasoned (without cracking wide open). I will have to try (again) to imitate your success although it won't be on such a beautiful piece of wood. Thank you for all you have taught me.

Such a beautiful piece of wood Gary. Mother nature sure can give us a canvas worth the headache sometimes. Working on a piece of wet sassafras with live edge here in central Pa. My garage has been smelling like Root beer and I'm loving it. Thank you for all of your tips. If it weren't for you and Phil I wouldn't know how to do what I'm doing and it's been a real privilege to learn from the best. Happy turning my Friend 😊

Thank you very much Edward for you kind words. Sounds good to have a Root Beer smelling shop. Years ago when I started my pattern making apprenticeship we used a lot of Sugar Pine for the patterns. You would not believe how many people would come in the shop and think it was a bakery. Even when I went on a vacation and came back it was a very sweet and powerful smell. But then you would get used to it and not even notice. Take care, Gary

Not the same as your Texas heat but I get it. Back in 1967 I was at Ft. Polk Louisiana for infantry training and it was a scorcher. Today will be a high of 71 they say which is just fine for me. Hi, Gary. Another fine piece from your hands. I've always been a matte finish enthusiast, but you and Phil may have me convinced enough to try the shellac finish one of these days. It really does show off highly figured wood. Glad to see that you were sporting a Hoonah, Alaska t-shirt for the beginning of the video. Hoonah is about the same population, and geographically in the same neighborhood, as my town on Prince of Wales Island. Thanks for a great video! Take care, --Paul
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Paul, I think you will love shellac and you do not have to make it shiny. Knock the shine back with scotch birite or steel wool. I love that Hoonah shirt. Reminds me of the mile long zip line we took. Takes 60 seconds to get to the bottom and you are sitting right out in the open. It was warm when I had it on but cooled off fast. We just had one heck of a snow storm. Only lasted 20 minutes or so but it was a surprise. Take care, Gary

Thank you Leo and I watched your first part. Should be a very cool looking vase. I had some English Walnut that came from a walnut orchard that was taken down because walnuts were not selling very well. I could have gotten dump trucks full of it. I think the fact the trees were not as old as the one that this wood came from they did not have as much color to them. Much lighter color but still pretty. This one was from our friends tree that was dying and had to come down. I did get all of the wood from it. You will be seeing some segment work from it as well. That is the wood I showed in my recent drying box video. I still have more strips to process as well. Take care, Gary

Thank you Colin, this came from a tree our friends had to have taken down. It was dying from a bug infection. A lot of it has worm holes in it. A few years ago I could have gotten all of this stuff I could ever want. A walnut orchard was taken down because the walnuts were not selling very well and they planted something else. It was not as pretty as this wood. This tree was much older is why I think the wood is so nice. Thanks for watching, Gary

What a beatiful piece of wood and the grain really pops. I am so pleased that you mentioned the set screw on the chuck when turning in reverse. I did not know awhile back and you told me about the screw which I drilled and tapped. Things happen real fast when you don't have the set screw and the results may not be good. Thanks
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Paul. I am glad you were able to get a set screw in yours. If you were to get a catch while turning in reverse without a set screw you might have to chase the chuck across the shop. Years ago I had a lathe before we had all the 4 jaw chucks so used a face plate. No set screws in it. I wired the motor so I could run it both ways. I only did that for sanding. It was a capacitor motor and it would only change direction when it was almost stopped. Well that is enough to unscrew the faceplate. the modern 3 phase motors and VFD will reverse on the fly. Thanks for watching, Gary

This piece deserved a special finish and it did work out nicely. It was so much fun to turn as well. Not spending hours of gluing for 5 minutes of turning LOL.
