My father’s parents were immigrants from Sicily. Both of my parents and I were born and raised in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Little Italy was a large, booming community! Italian immigrants lived and worked together, replicated their way of life- including food, trades, stores- in the Lower East Side of Manhattan! After a few generations, though, people moved into “suburban sprawls” to buy homes, etc. I’m so glad that I caught the tail-end of what was a glorious, authentic, Italian-American immigrant experience! I wish you could have experienced it too, Alessio. It was really, really something special. Glad to see Casa D’Angelo carrying it on.

It is good to hear you talking so positively about ‘southerners’ -for too long in Italy calabrese or Sicilian or apuglian were treated terribly in the north but they are the nicest people !!!
@Chet73

It’s because of the Italian tax system. The north is over taxed and sent to the south. It produces a lot of resentment.

@@Chet73 Don't comment on things you know nothing about. It has nothing to do with the tax system. It had to do with history, how the south was forcibly annexed to the north. It has to do with more than a century of propaganda representing the south as freeloaders. It has to do with more than a century of the North systematically raping the South of its resources and manpower and then blaming the South for its problems. It has to do with the north aiding and abetting the mafia.

(hears French) "French people, what are you doing in Little Italy?" says the Frenchie speaking Italian in Little Italy! 😉But all jokes aside, the neighborhood next door Nolita (stands for North of Little Italy) as well as SoHo (stands for South of Houston Street) has become a hub for the French community with boutiques and cafes. A Little Paris! Also, you said the Big Boss license plate fits you, but I think the Bada Bing license plate above it fits you more 😂

I have actually eaten here before. I’m in NJ so I’m super close. I can vouch for the food. My grandmother was from Naples and they don’t play about their food! Lol… It’s delicious and you can taste the quality ingredients. I am someone who gets my flour, EVOO, balsamic vinegar and other favorites imported from Italy and you tell the difference. I will also say on the flip side, there are other places in little Italy that are Americanized. This place just isn’t one of them. Another neighborhood you could visit is Greenwich Village, which is where the British and Irish expat community is located. Tea & Sympathy on Greenwich Ave and 13th Street is an authentic British tea shop and restaurant selling British candies and snacks. You could get a couple British chocolates and snacks and do a vid comparing them to Italian ones! There's also Myers of Keswick which sells meat pies and snacks as well.

What's also strange is that I have friends that are Greek and Middle Eastern; even though I am Italian , people who don't know us assume we are all family because of similar features and coloring. We also get together to cook, and we cook certain recipes with the same ingredients. What was even funnier was my Swedish mother in law gets in act quite well with certain foods
@yokoakimura
@yokoakimura Жыл бұрын
It is not so strange. People think Italians are “white” and “European” like that is supposed to be a definitive distinction that likens all European countries together, but Italy is very much a Mediterranean country, and had a lot of history/trade with the Middle East and Northern Africa. The British isles are going to have more of that northern Viking influence although the Roman influence is definitely there, and they have that cold weather and potatoes culture like a lot of the Northern European states
@sirBrouwer

well it is known that back in the Byzantine area a lot of Nordic warriors did go to Constantinople (Istanbul) to fight as hired man. Big chance that they would bring there own culture and adopt some of the local culture and brought it back home.

Yes. You are absolutely right. I noticed something strange though. Because my husband is Swedish, I thought I would take a stab at learning Swedish! I was baking the other day, and without thinking, I started using some food words in Italian aloud and when my mother in law heard me, she understood it when I told her "Cinnamon Roll even though she her Italian is non existent. Latin came into usages in Sweden in the 1600 so I assume Swedish got some of it's root words from Latin

My husbands family's business was at 345 Mulberry St. in the late 1800's - early 1900's. It was Little Italy, but now it's considered Chinatown.

Glad you moved tables - away from the street. I was worried about your safety. Good to know we now have a great place to eat for our next trip to NYC.

I lived in Friuli for 4 years for work. I traveled all over Italy but Friuli is my favorite! I lived in Fontanafredda, loved it there.

I live in NY and used to work 2 blocks from this restaurant. Have never tried, but I'll make a point of doing so now! I lived in south Brooklyn, the other little Italy! I always went to Villabate Alba for bakery, and L&B Spumoni Gardens for the grandma style pizza. They cannot be beat! Someone got shot over the sauce recipe a few years ago. If you go to either of these places, please make a video!
