Billy, you may want to invest in portable car ramps for future use moving your lift around. Also, you need a basket of some kind to hold your tools while on the lift. You could also put things you remove like the light bulb.
@byrn
@byrn Жыл бұрын
This. Or a sheet of plate steel like they use in temporary roadwork. Nothing wood is safe in supporting lifts of any sort given the amount of weight they carry in batteries. And always make ramps wider than you need, half again or more, it allows you to angle the approach/descent especially in awkward spaces.

Billy! I am so glad that you have an extremely supportive wife like Gwen!!! It's wonderful that she is on board with your renovation addiction. I seriously don't think had anyone else had purchased the Convent, that they would have even come close to giving it the respect it so deserves! 👏 And what an absolute shame that would have been to see all her beauty either ripped out or covered up with some awful modern decor.

The difference between Billy doing demo, and Ryan doing demo, is dramatic 😊. Ryan should watch Billy, to see how to methodically dismantle construction work in an orderly way... to reduce mess, and reduce creating more work for himself. That being said, I'm super proud of Ryan agreeing to take on this work himself. Remodeling isn't for everyone. Wish you guys could figure out a way to upcycle the wood I to a project. My husband uses reclaimed wood/lumber, and pallet wood, and makes things out of them. He built an amazing pub in the garage of our previous house, all out of reclaimed lymber. We made it look similar to an old British pub, complete with a dart board that had a door we could lower to cover it, old wooden pulleys, thick rope, and a handmade wood cylinder with a handmade, spoked wheel used to turn it. It was really cool. He clad the outside of both of our sheds in pallet wood (he put tar paper underneath & treated the pallet wood to keep it from getting water logged). They came out really nice. He built me a dry-sink sort of thing with two shelves below to use as a potting table... all out of reclaimed lumber.

@kellymiller3868 not dumping on him. Many of us have decades of construction experience, and we want to see Ryan be successful in his endeavor to remodel his apartment. He doesn't have experience, so some of us have tops for him that will help. And who said I agreed with the ramp Billy made to move that scissor lift down the step, but not all ideas always work the way we think they will. But I really liked the way Billy demoed that archway to the chapel. It's how my husband and I would do it.... carefully, one board or piece of plywood at a time, so as not to cause unexpected damage to anything else in the process. Ryan being new to this, he quickly knocks everything down and then he has a big mess to clean up... and I worried about that wire that was in that kitchen wall. He didn't mention what it was, nor if he'd shut off the power first. I don't want to see him get badly hurt. He's a nice guy, and I like his channel too. I did say that I'm proud of him for taking this on, even without experience. You can't learn if you've never done it. There are tips that will help him work smarter, not harder.... because construction and demo is a lot if work. My husband and I always say, "plan your work, then work your plan." We also adhere to the efficiency rule of not 'touching things twice,' which means... for example, pitting a tarp down when doing demo and stacking it properly as you go so that when you're done, you just drag the tarp outside and put it in the truck, or a dumpster if one is in site. Dramatically reduces time and clean up. Time is money, so efficiency is important.

@@scottnyc6572 I think there is a device called an Alaskan Chainsaw Mill, and there may be similar devices in other countries, and you can use it to cut planks in whatever length you need, attached to an ordinary chainsaw. That might work with cutting the existing beam if it can be lowered to the floor it could be done right there in the building.

@@bluebird1239 These things are pretty wasteful, it might be a better idea to find someone local with a mobile bandsaw mill. Shouldn't be too costly for half a day. For one huge beam a chainsaw mill isn't that bad (although I think a skilled person could actually cut that freehand) but if you're cutting smaller timbers or boards the cut thickness of a chainsaw compared to a bandsaw means you're turning a lot of good wood into sawdust.

Amazing what you keep discovering Billy. Like the idea of a new beam and lift the height back. I suspect, thinking out loud, the ceiling was lowered so when the nuns were doing 1 to 1 sessions with 3 people, their voices would not echo around the room and 4th/5th persons would hear them and where they hid the treasures LOL. Honestly, I’d personally just forget dropping the ceiling especially given the loads of work involved in replacing that I-Beam. Clearly it was done professionally and done well so why go through all the hassle and capital to undo it for the sake of slightly higher ceilings? You’ve achieved the height in the kitchen and other areas. Those are big wins to celebrate over. Not all of them are going to be wins though. I’m assuming that area would be used as a bar reception area. I’d keep the nice wood paneling just behind the arch and the paneling that goes down along the sides and just insert some nice custom stained glass pieces that can be illuminated from behind to cover up that arch area you’ve just removed to make it look a little more appealing and still gives character. Keep it as is. At some point you also have to include the convents most recent “history” even if it means preserving a more “modern looking” area, the whole thing can’t exactly be reverted back to 17th century. Just my thoughts. I saw some beautiful backlit stained glass in Romania at a restaurant called Carú Cu Bere. Check it out. Maybe it’ll give you some great ideas to save you the cost and effort.

Take the steel beam and move it to the attic and bolt it above the bent beam with multiple bolts, slowly forcing the old wooden beam back into shape. Easier said than done. Crack on.

You could replace the saggy beam with a steal beam that is then clad with with the old wooden beam. This way you could save on cost but still have the look of the original beam. Maybe you could even reuse the existing steal beam…

Am I the only one who hoped Billy would floor it and do a Dukes of Hazard?

Billy, I always wonder when hearing you talk about antiques and architecture, where does your interest come from ? Did you study these subjects in college or did your family instill these interests in you ? You seem to have a lot of knowledge in both areas. Thanks, just a curious grammy !

The arch is beautiful! Hope you can open that lowered ceiling out. Some of today's music sounded like Downton Abbey music, makes me think of how majestic the convent will look!

Once again, incredible videography!!! Love all the opening shots of scary parts of the convent, plus the garden, etc. Great work, Billy (I kept picturing Ryan with his sledge hammer!). Blessings.
