We need to start a “save the models” campaign, save them from potential injuries and the embarrassment of “performing” in pointe shoes. Just hire real dancers, I know there are several dancers who also model, it shouldn’t be so hard for companies to hire the right people for the job 😭.

Very valid and good point. Dancers need the work and money too! There are so so many beautiful dancers who could be models and who ARE models and are struggling because we have so few companies and jobs for professional ballerinas. They would be able to bring their own shoes and could do incredible photo shoots and commercials. Both of my main teachers are not only fantastic dancers but they are absolutely beautiful and photogenic and charismatic Let’s give pointe shoe/ballet themed modeling jobs to trained dancers please!!!!

For what it's worth, I used to know a lot of female models back in the day, and a lot of them were former dancers, or had studied ballet when they were young. I think their agencies don't realize the risk of putting someone in point shoes that hasn't danced in years (if at all), they just remember hearing about such and such model taking ballet. Or, it was listed as a "special skill" on their resume. Bottom line, hire actual dancers if you're going to put them on point!!!!!

“The industry” is such a wide term- I think you’re being too kind. At least some of “them” know, “they” just don’t care. I think it would be an interesting video if her team could find some advertising using dancers that are currently trained! Though I imagine that would be harder to find

Yep. Definitely blaming agencies who read "6yrs ballet training" and translate that to "she can to pointe work!" because that's definitely not the case! Just me... personally, know quite a few girls who took ballet for years, well into their teen years, because it helped them with flexibility/balance and it was fun... and not one ever went en pointe since they never wanted a career of it... they just wanted to work on their lines and grace. They're also the same girls I know who did gymnastics and yoga and were also on the school's dance team (read pep squad)

I used to work in theater and the special skills thing is so real. A production of Oklahoma I volunteered with had separate callbacks for the dream ballet doubles and none of the girls had done ballet in the past five years - except for the girl who had only done barre cardio. They ended up doing a modern dance version.

If the agencies even cared to look (unlikely), the models probably had ballet listed as a special skill in their resume just because they took ballet classes for half a year when they were 4. And the agency people, not knowing sh*t about f*ck, went "fab, she's booked".

The craziest thing is that ballet dancers are more often than not absolutely gorgeous and they're all trained to emote and act as they dance so they could be featured in all these commercials without even batting an eye. I'm sure there are tons of student dancers out there who would love the opportunity. Ok, maybe not the ones at schools affiliated with ballet companies, who may not be allowed to work elsewhere, but there are thousands of dancers out there who have enough talent to do these fairly simple jobs even though they're not in major schools.

Advertisers don't understand that Point shoes are not accessories or clothing. They are tools( in my opinion). They are tools that ballerinas use to do a performing art. Like other tools, you need to know how to use them so that you don't get hurt.

@trochilidae.to.accipitridae
@trochilidae.to.accipitridae Жыл бұрын
That is seriously an excellent thought. Maybe the ballet community can start an online petition to be sent to OSHA about the use of dangerous professional tools by amateurs hired to portray experts. I'm sure there are other such tools used in commercials by actors that are dangerous to them as amateurs. There are a pile of regulations about the use of firearms by actors in TV and movies, designed to prevent injury; that could be a model for regulating the use of other dangerous professional tools (ie, pointe shoes).

The thing I don’t understand is why not just hire a ballet dancer. There are so many beautiful girls with the proper skills, who are just as gorgeous as any model. I am sure there are models who specifically have ballet training, or ballet dancers who understand at least the basics of modeling (I understand that the model sometimes needs to understand how the lighting and the camera can affect them, but with a proper director and skilled photographer, I think it would be much easier to coach a dancer into professional modeling and get amazing results, than to use a model who doesn’t have the skills needed. Especially someone who is a ballet dancer because they should be very used to taking direction to make small changes based on observations and they should have a heightened awareness of their body. I don’t see how at this point it’s not just a niche in the modeling industry, it’s safer too.
@SobrietyandSolace

I’ll admit I stood in for a ballerina in really low budget productions. I wasn’t paid for the role but I at least had done some adult ballet classes. I did extremely limited static poses en pointe and consulted dancers on ballet forums to check I was over my box, turned out correctly etc I was lucky the Amazon shoes fit to an acceptable level but having someone fit and break the shoes in correctly (or use dead or semi pointe shoes) it will be easier for the models to get over and have banana feet. like ideally a proper dancer would have been better, but what I don’t understand is how they couldn’t even have a ballet instructor on set or have them do ONE lesson at least as it would make them 10 times more convincing. Like how hard would that be as a compromise if you still want to use models? And then you are also hiring people in the ballet world

People try to defend the fasion agency saying “It’s not the dancers job to be a model.” Well being a dancer isn’t the models job. Meanwhile dancers practically know how to model, because of taking pictures for dance. Had to improv a pose for my dance costume pictures almost 2 months ago. Dancers are more than worthy to be a model. They know the proper technique, how the body should move, and especially the ballerinas know how to go en pointe. Models however? Unless they take dance lessons or ballet in their free time besides modeling, they don’t know the proper technique, how the body should move for it, or know how to go en pointe. The models can seriously hurt themselves by going en pointe, since they don’t have the proper training. Though being en pointe hurts for dancers, they’re trained to go through the pain, make it look easy, handle it, and how to go en pointe correctly without seriously damaging their feet.

To your question about why the advertisers insist on pointe shoes - In my opinion, ballet is beautiful, but seeing a ballerina dancing and twirling in pointe shoes is magnificent! Breathtaking! It's the ultimate performance! It can make my heart race and evoke an emotional response! Pointe shoes "ups the ante". And, I believe, the advertisers see it the same, and are hoping consumers relate the epitome of dance to the value they are trying to convey to their products.

I agree with @kjergens1. If they approuch a ballerina in a company, they would need to speak to the company to "hire them out" for the add. So Ballerinas could possibly be more expensive, or just too technical to figure out the contract. It would be a hassle. Any Ballerina's who are not with a company, could possibly get screwed by just being hired as a contactor and not be offered a modeling contract and be paid appropriately.

I just can't believe these unethical teachers approving dancers (usually fairly young girls) for pointe when they are nowhere near ready. I was approved finally at seventeen because of weak ankles that it took a ton of time to build strength in. I planned on pursuing modern, so I wanted to do just one year of pointe to broaden my dance experience, and I was SO glad to NOPE the eff out of there when the year was over and throw myself into safely throwing myself on the floor. 😂 And when it was recital time I had NO business being on that stage. Not because my teacher had me doing anything unsafe, but because I was SO CLEARLY still in the basics and looked terrible in the performance. At least I had my three contemporary pieces to make up for it. I'm convinced teachers who do this are doing it for the money, even if it's just subconsciously. The girls beg and beg to be approved, the parents get pissy about it and threaten to move their daughters to a different studio, and the teacher gives in to keep the money flowing. It's why I always tell friends enrolling their kids in ballet to choose a place called a "school" rather than a "studio" or let me look up the studio's ballet teacher for them. I went to a small city "studio" (the nearest school affiliated with a company was 45 minutes away), but I lucked out that a) they taught real, proper technique and b) they didn't do competitions, so there wasn't the pressure for overstretching and crap. We need to talk about the ethics of dance instruction, ESPECIALLY ballet, way, way more in the dance world. But I often feel like dancers coming up with legit technique have no idea all these unethical studios exist, so there are few people to call them out. I think TikTok and KZbin are changing that, thank goodness.

I get that the models are just doing their job but to me I feel like it's a jab to the ballet world. We've been trained in this field for years and companies are still refusing to hire actual dancers that know what we are doing. Also I follow the Instagram page and the things I see on there are just atrocious.

As a non-dancer, I'm always fascinated by ppl not trained thinking they can go en pointe! lol Also, do men do it too? If so, id love to see a series of men going up on their toes! lol

For the first clip I do like the double entendre of "attitude". I think that's pretty creative for a car commercial.

The girl in the commercial in spanish says "Having hemorroids is suffering in silence. You can´t think of anything else. It´s really bothering, hurts, itches... but the worst comes when you have to go to the bathroom. But I discovered something that changed my life forever: Contractil (she then shows the medicine). Look here, without any pillow (she then crosses her legs on the floor) doing what I love. I can´t ask for anything else" It was really weird...

Also have an occupation that gets misrepresented across the media. It takes about two seconds to know they have no idea of what they're doing. Same complaint, why don't they just hire professionals? Ballet dancers can look like models, models do not look like ballet dancers.

Risk of injury aside (because if you don't know something, you just don't know), how do the people making these - who work in the visual arts day in day out - not notice that it just looks terrible - visually! (I feel so sorry for the models, 'cos you can see how hard they're trying, but you just can't do what you're not trained for)

Wow! Spanish TV is a lot further along than in the US. The commercial at 5:27 is for Contractil hemorroid cream, and the close up, time lapse was suppose to be actual hemmoroids shrinking. Now try to unsee that.

Poor Josephine, anxiety through the roof. I agree with all points on these commercials. How hard is it to source dancers who are somewhat experienced en pointe?? I feel sorry for the models that cop backlash over this. xx

The advertiser who made the car commercial screwed up. They should have hired a real dancer and made a delicious play on their tag line, 'Performance is an attitude!" It would have been so beautiful and memorable instead of whatever that was.

I feel so bad for these models. Going up on your toes is NOT easy and I'd be afraid of breaking my toes after not practicing for 12+ years [and BTW I was a ballet dancer for 13 years before having to quit due to feet/ankle problems] Never reached Pointe though. So seeing the models trying it makes my toes curl in on themselves in a phantom pain 😢

MDB asks the right question: #WhoDidThisToThem ? Adding injury to insult [sic] overlooking the discipline and artistry of actual dancers, it endangers the models.

Or why can't they get a real ballet student for those commercials (leaving aside how much sense it makes to put a ballerina in a shower gel ad)?
