This song was written in 1965 by Paul Simon. It was then a folk song meant to be a warning about the lack of communication between people in the modern society. The version of Disturbed is the anger created because we didn't listen.

This is entirely incorrect. Trent Reznor commented, when he heard the remake of "Hurt" by Johnny Cash, "I wasn't prepared for what I saw, and it really wasn't my song anymore". What Paul Simon ACTUALLY said was "In case you missed it, Disturbed did a wonderful rendition of "The Sound of Silence" on Conan this week. The S&G cover..." He also emailed David Draiman and said "Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I’d seen you do it live. Nice, Thanks.” These comments get conflated all the time, with people posting this inaccurate information over and over and over. I would love it if people would do some cursory fact checking.

Whether Simon actually that or not, it totally is. I can’t even listen to Simon & Garfunkel’s version anymore. Their upbeat tempo royally irks my nerves. Pentatonix does a great cover of Disturbed’s version of the song, but for me… From now on, Disturbed singing Sound of Silence will always be ACE!!!

I normally detest covers of classics, but this one brings me to tears EVERY time I hear it. Simon and Garfunkel's original is great (albeit more upbeat) but this version...is a masterpiece. David Draiman did a remarkable job. Paul Simon was so impressed he told David it's his, now. What a compliment from the original!

It was written around the time of the Vietnam War and President Kennedy was assassinated. It was a warning and no one listened until now. David Draimans version makes you feel the words. Makes you sit up and listen. Sad thing is, it could have been written today with everything still going on in the world. Please have a look at the live version on the Conan show but please note he was very ill with Flu and he had to sit down in case he fell down. He refused to cancel the show. Live is amazing too. Disturbed has other beautiful songs but when they go hard, they go hard. Just be prepared. David Draiman is probably best known for his singing with distortion in his voice like towards the end of this song. It often surprises people how beautiful his normal voice is and even more shocking when he drops down lower in his register to sing those deeper fuller notes like at the beginning. He has a 4.1 octave range but generally is using +/- 2 octaves for his performance of their songs.

David comes from an orthodox Jewish background and trained as a Hazzan, or Cantor, who leads a congregation in songful prayer. He's had his demons. Battled, and won, against heroin use. When he was aged 16 his then girlfriend who introduced him to heroin killed herself. He himself very nearly died aged 18 due to the heroin use, and that experience helped him to get off of the drug. He went cold turkey and kicked it. With that in mind Disturbed's music is heavily influenced by these experiences. The girlfriend's suicide influenced their song "Inside the Fire". The video to which is very disturbing. Expect some hard hitting lyrics and visuals when you listen to their original work. Which is also very heavy. They did this song as they often do a cover when they release an album. They've done a very good cover of Genesis' "Land of Confusion". But as you've seen, one of their most popular songs is "Down With the Sickness". Be careful, the full version is not for the faint hearted.

That is the amazing David Draiman. He was trained at an early age as a cantor in the jewish religion, but chose to dedicate his life to heavy metal rock with his band 'Disturbed' (thank God). Another fantastic cover they did was 'Land of Confusion' the old Genesis track but delivered with real GUTS 😁 Hope you can check that one out too one day, you'll love it I'm sure.

Of course, Dave and his group modified the arrangement and did a masterful job, as I believe this was the way this song was Meant to be played. One of my hobbies is watching review videos over and over of the same song to all the different expressions of reactors. You immediately jumping when his voice started told me I was gonna love your reaction. I’ve seen people left speechless, people moved to tears, people saying he stared straight into her soul. There’s also a version live on Conan where David had like a 102 temp that night but the blue backing lights adds to the Epicness of their version. Two songs that give me goosebumps every single time I hear them are cover songs and that is this and Johnny Cash Hurt (a Nine Inch Nails song). I’d love to see Disturbed remake Bridge Over Troubled Water. I think that would be awesome. Thank you pretty lady. Your eyes are as stunning as this cover. One of the things said about this version of the song is that Paul Simon had stated that for years, he and Art Garfunkel essentially owned this song.. And he is right, because whenever anyone mentioned The Sound of Silence, they thought of their original recording. But Paul said himself that this version from Disturbed is so beautiful and haunting that it breathed a totally different life into it, and that he and Art no longer "own" this song. This song is Disturbed's now, just because of how beautifully haunting it sounds, and that this is how it should be. One thing that Disturbed has done (at least as far as I can tell going back to their first album) is that they include at least one cover song on their album. They so far have done Genesis, Sting, Tears for Fears, Simon and Garfunkel, among others. But this is the song that Floor was talking about on Beste Zangers that Henk sang for her; plus Henk learned how to sing with distortion in his voice for her, so he could sound like David Draiman in this version.

David Draiman's got a once in a generation voice and the training to use it properly. I've always likened his voice to a Lamborghini V12 engine (I'm a bit of a car nut... :P). Smooth and throaty at low revs, it rises to a powerful growl when you hit the throttle, and when you really step on it it roars like some mythical creature from the dawn of time. He's just so powerful and controlled, it's amazing to listen to and you should definitely check out some more, but be fair warned: Sound of Silence is an outlier in their repertoire. It is about as far from their normal sound as you can get and still be the same band, but the rest of their stuff is excellent as well, just a lot more hard core. They do make a point of including a cover song of something thematically important to the concept of each album, and this one was written in the mid 60s by the phenomenal Simon and Garfunkel, but they really put their own unique stamp on it and made it their own. One of the things you will find if you explore Disturbed, is they do NOT shy away from difficult topics or dark subject matter. They actually focus a lot on mental health and dealing with trauma or abuse, but more in a mindset of surviving and recovering from these things, and even when they visit really dark topics, they touch on it in a generally positive manner that manages to be uplifting and inspiring. One of my personal favorites is The Light. Great song about dealing with dark times in your life.

Well, my deleted comment went sorta like this: When I first heard this cover of Sound Of Silence, I said "Now THIS is how this song should have been sung in the first place. Simon & Garfunkel's version was just too "happy" sounding for the subject matter." I was blown away by how much more emotional this version of the song is compared to the original. Another song where the cover version is way better than the original is Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails song Hurt. This is a MUST hear...can I get a "Hell yeah!" from the rest of subscribers if they think so too? Here is a link to that song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnKrdJmQibd6n6s. Cheers!

I disagree. Simon and Garfunkel's version is different that's all and clearly how Paul Simon intended the song to be. However Disturbed's version is also really good but for different reasons.

May I suggest the Cranberries song Zombie. First do the original, than follow up with the Bad Wolves version, since you enjoy those male vocals. You might want to do the homework on the song first. You probably heard it as it was often played on the alternative rock radio in the 90’s.

Love the Bad Wolves version as well the incredibly moving original Cranberries! I was devastated to learn that O’Riorden(?) , Cranberries’ lead singer, passed away the day before she was to record Zombies with the Bad Wolves. They went ahead and recorded it in her memory.

when the original version was written and preformed in the sixties, this was a warning of what could happen if people didnt talk to each other ..this version is him saying you didint listen and now it has come to pass " people talking but not speaking .people hearing with out listening " sounds a lot like our txting culture " silence like a cancer grows " when people are called this and that because you dont agree with them ,leads to people not speaking out about things they think are wrong. "praying to the neon god they made" sounds like todays celebrity adoration thats seems prevalent. so he has all the right to shout at people for not listening to the original all thosse years ago ..... this always chokes me up as soemone who was around with the original and it makes me sad to see where the world has gone

Holy Cow! You crack me up! You have heard the original Simon & Garfinkle version -Yes? But you're right, the original is 'pretty' and many have commented that David gives the lyrics a whole spotlit and punchy depth of meaning. The song IS about the damage caused to so many by social injustices and inequity. This message SHOULD be Roared! 😃

@@thequestionqueens Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel were a folk / rock duo that were active from 1963 up to1970, when they split up over 'musical differences'. Initially because Paul started secretly publishing solo work without telling Art. Later Paul complained Art was heading for an acting career and leaving him behind. Whatever the truth, both were very different personalities and the relationship was shattered. Because of their huge worldwide popularity numerous attempts were made to lure them into 'come back' performances / tours, offering big bucks. They did come back together for a handful of gigs, most notably their 1981 free concert in Central Park New York, reputed to have 500,000 attendees! There is no doubt that Paul Simon was a brilliant songwriter, and musical arranger. Art had the most extraordinarily flexible, unique fragile and haunting voice. Their blend was simply beautiful. Their back catalogue is huge and their songs are long term classics, covered by many artists subsequently, and yes, often used in movie scores. You reacted to PTX version of S & G's Sound of Silence just today! 😆 Many reactors are now going back to see original artists work so they can have a fuller appreciation of both; where the music comes from and what is being done with it by newer artists today. Suggest you react to their Central Park performance of 'Sound of Silence' next!?

The original was written and performed by Simon and Garfunkel in the sixties. This is an amazing arrangement and performance by Disturbed. I must say though, I am disappointed with all of the pauses. It's unlike you to pause that many times and I think it would have made an even bigger impact if you had paused alot less. I'm not trying to sound mean and I apologize if it comes across that way. I just felt it needed to be said. Thank you. I do enjoy your reactions.

In 1965 Paul Simon sang this song with the voice of an angel; a warning about what mankind was doing to each other. In 2015 David Draiman sang with the voice of an AVENGING angel; Eyes aflame and sword held high; the rage of what mankind had DONE to each other. The anger that we didn't heed the warning.
