I’ve watched enough Dr. Phil to know it happens to men and women equally. If you’re a fat, bald, 65 year old guy and a gorgeous model from the Philippines or Russia is madly in love with you, she’s not real. If you’re a homely old lady and a 50 year old General,of the Army or oil rig worker who looks like Brad Pitt is in love with you, he’s not real. He’s a once poor Nigerian, now rich because you’re not the only one he’s scamming. Where do people get the nerve to even think these people are real and could be in love with them? Could I throw 25 years of marriage away if my husband spent our life savings on an online scam? You betcha.

So the wife has been financially and emotionally unfaithful. Guy would be better off without her and to mention the infidelity being the cause of the debts to pay fraud. He needs to stop being her walking wallet.

I suggest having an attorney write up an agreement between husband and wife. If their life savings is spent on this, and next year she decides she wants a divorce, it would not be fair to the husband that everything be divided in half. At their age they should be embracing each other, not looking around the corner for an affair. A cheater today is usually a cheater tomorrow. I’ve been in 3 relationships and cheated on by all 3. I’m obviously doing something wrong to have this common denominator, I take responsibility for whatever my faults are. But I speak from experience, it’s HIGHLY likely this episode will repeat itself. The caller needs to cover his back now with an agreement drawn by a good lawyer.

I agree , Sounds like like sound advice. He also sounds a little desperate, and gullible, bad enough to have been cheated on ,but to put you in financial jeopardy too? I would be outraged! They were married for 25 yrs? ( married at 50? my guess second marriage for both?) and they had no issue problems till now? I don't believe it. And maybe not her first time cheating either in this relationship or maybe her other?

Mid 70s, she should probably be checked for dementia, I had a few folks who did this and that was the first sign.

Yes that is always a possibility too; people are so judgy . . . With that possibility, hubby needs to put some financial boundaries in place.

The moment he pays off HER personal debt with HIS money, she’ll divorce him and take half of whatever he has left. Divorce her now. Let her wallow in her debt.

He’s a big enough person to admit what happened was partially because of his own actions or neglect. People can go their entire lives having good moral character but still fall into one of Satan’s snares. The burden of rebuilding trust is now on her. I think this woman should also be evaluated for early dementia.

Early dementia, I thought about that too! My mother started having small symptoms of dementia in her early 70's. She didn't have an internet affair and didn't lose any money, but she wasn't all there anymore in intellectual capabilities.

No. What people choose to do is their choice, and no anyone else's. Why is infidelity always a man's fault regardless of who did it?

She only ran back to him because she lost her money and he can help her take care of her mistake. Trust me if she was still okay financially she would not be trying to work on that marriage

My guess is she will do it again. It's a mental health and vulnerability issue. I work in mental health and see this often. On one occasion there was a bank institution that loaned a woman with dementia a lot of money. The woman spent all the money and couldn't pay it back. The woman's family took the bank to court and won.

I agree with Dave. The wife should definitely go back to work and pay off those bills (as long as she doesn't have some kind of debilitating illness).
