Seems to be the trend for recent callers; 6-figure incomes, low to no debt, and struggling to figure out why they're living paycheck to paycheck. Then as Dave berates them they let slip they've got some $500 per month private school or some ridiculous toy they see as mandatory spending in their budget.

Taxes, insurance, child care and all other expenses are known already. Making $135k-180k, they should be able to afford a $200K condo. Eating out a lot, buying toys will kill your saving easily.

I know what my take home monthly pay to the penny, but ask me what my annual gross income is and I have to think about that. Bills and life happens all throughout the year usually on a monthly basis so I'm wired to think of it in that way. To me knowing your annual income is almost pointless, but at least it gives you a general baseline so I guess that's the point.

Yeah that is the crux of most of these calls. The caller wants a quick fix or something to do with getting a lower interest rate loan, when the solution is simply to delay gratification, hunker down and have basically no life for about 12 months, then your debt is gone and you get your life back! But I agree, it's difficult for most people.

A 200k house in Conn must be in a dangerous area. wife may want to sell to get into a safer (but more expensive) apartment. Dave should have asked more questions. They could sell, get out of debt, get safer, and start from scratch rebuilding. But in general I wouldn't sell.

Definitely not cheap. I live in Ansonia, about 30 minutes from New Haven. I attend school at a state university in New Haven Half Time. Rents in my small town average about $1200 per month. No way I can afford it, so I live in HUD subsidized housing. Once I graduate college and I start making more money, maybe I will be better off, but still without the ability to drive a vehicle. Medical problems prevent me from driving.

It’s actually not a horrible idea from wifey. Housing is starting to deflate and it might be good to “get out” before the property can’t be sold for an acceptable gain. Especially since this definitely isn’t a “forever home”. Getting rid of debt would change their lives. They’d be able to save tons of money, since new haven isn’t too expensive.
