It breaks my heart to read New Moon because Jacob was a wonderful guy who truly cared about her. Not because she was “mysterious” and he couldn’t read her mind. If the Cullens never showed up in Forks they would’ve fell in love and had a beautiful life together. I truly believe Edward robbed her of that.

I second that. Her relationship actually built up organically, instead of an instant “he’s so hot and mysterious/ can’t read her mind and smells nice”. Back then before Stephanie decided Jacob is getting too popular for her liking, he was really sweet. I wish there was an alternative universe series of sort exploring what would have happened if Bella never met Edward. Because let’s be honest their dynamic, the whole story around Emely, Sam and Leah is quite interesting, Jacob not being able to tell her what was really up could be an compelling conflict. But it could also end in yet another A/B/O romantasy story rotting on the shelves.

just a thought and wouldn't Jacob not be a match for Bella too as a significant other - perhaps more like a brother or best friend because Jacob does not hit that sense of puberty until he goes through the phase. please correct me if I'm wrong, that's what I got from the book 😅

Watching this movie as an adult just makes me sad. I specifically remember the scene where she folds the picture of her and Edward in half and tapes it in the scrapbook so that she can't see herself. She has such a deeply unhealthy lack of self-worth. Throughout the series, she continues to think she isn't good enough for Edward and doesn't understand why he loves her.
@StephAnya

Yes! I actually deleted a whole section on self-worth from this video because it was running long, but I touch on it in the Twilight video. Edward also doesn’t feel worthy of her which is why they cling so desperately to one another.

I feel in New Moon Stephanie Meyer actually ended up writing a relationship people could root for. But it was completely on accident: she never really intended for Jacob to be a serious romantic alternative; hence why Bella never seems to develop any romantic feelings for him. Then when New Moon actually came out she saw how many people actually loved Jacob, and she decided to make him absolutely awful in Eclipse to try and correct that. Thank you so much for this break down! I really love your perspective!

I never thought she ruined Jacob on purpose. I've seen so many people think so, but it feels so false to me. No, Stephanie loved Jacob, she wanted him to be more of a love interest, she wanted people to root for him, for Bella to realise she loved him on some level, and for the love triangle to be an actual love triangle. THAT'S WHY she wrote Jacob so badly in Eclipse. Because she thought he was boring in New Moon and she wanted him to step up. A viable romantic interest according to Stephanie is a person like Edward in Twilight, like Jacob in Eclipse. Someone who would treat you as a child, thinking they know what's better for you more than you do, and who would dedicate their existence to you and never give up on you choosing them. So in her mind, she didn't ruin Jacob, she made him much better. It's just her fantasy on romance, which is okay, everyone has their own personal ones. I'm not sure if she ever claimed it's the healthiest of relationships.
@thatonkgau5221
@thatonkgau5221 Жыл бұрын
@@moni4369 Just because that's her fantasy doesn't make it okay because Stephanie's views on love and relationships are incredibly warped and toxic. She believes what makes a good partner is obsessive control and she influenced that belief on all these naive teenage girls. She did Jacob so dirty turned him from this nice, sweat, supportive kid into this annoying douche "nice guy". Jacobs whole defining character is how much of a simp he is for Bella. And Stephenie thought the best ending for his character wasn't to get over Bella,find someone else and devot himself to more than just a girl but to have him fall in love with a baby.

I feel that Bella's sense of self-worth is tied to what she can offer others, which likely stemming from her childhood where she was a parentified child. She likely developed a core belief that her worth is tied to what she can offer others, and Edward's love challenged this on a rational level for her because she can't understand or justify why he loves her if she cant 'offer' him anything. Also, I love that Bella with Jacob is just Bella. She is the most herself with him, free of feeling the need to prove herself. They offer each other emotional safety, and prior to him changing into a werewolf, they had a healthy relationship.

I always considered jacob pre-wolf transition to be ideal, then post-wolf transition to be a jerk. But i still rooted for him because going thru basically 2nd puberty is no joke, and its wolf puberty, so i imagine he is always angry/emotional for no reason. During that, he is watching someone he loves go back to their toxic relationship, and its an actual deadly vampire with control issues! And lets not forget he is a teenager so everything bad feels like the world is ending and thus he does regretable stupid shit. Really wished he could've managed to get over bella on his own without the renesme plot, i was more invested in his personal development than any other character.

I truly wish she gave Leah a better plot point, in Eclipse she introduced her and in Breaking Dawn we see why she’s so upset, not only does she have to be around her ex who is with her cousin now, but she has to share thoughts with teenage boys and her body stopoed growing, so she no longer feels like a woman. I love my little fan story about exploring Jacob and Leah being together. I mean, if imorinting has something to do with your genes picking the ultimate partner, then Leah would be the best choice. Once she stops phasing she starts aging again. What better genes would their be than being with another shape shifter. Making him imprint on Rasputin, I make jokes about her name, makes zero sense and she only did that to totally kill off any sort of fans Jacob had left.

Thats a sad excuse. A stupid take that I absolutely hate. Yall don't know Jacob's character at all do you. You expect that after everything that happened to him in Eclipse, for him to be the innocent naive boy that he was in new moon?? All the trauma that Jacob went through at the hands of those vampires plus his transformation and how he deals with and processes that is not "character assassination". And anyone who says that I think doesn't understand Jacob or his role in the story. Edward was at his worst in the whole series in Eclipse,(taking out the engine and disabling her car, tailgating her, kidnapping her, instigating an argument between her and her father, threatening to kill her bestfriend etc...) and did no one say that was to make him look worse than Jake after new moon. Like that's the whole point of the story. You know Sun and Moon= Eclipse. Jacob is the sun, he is Bella's light and salvation but Edward is the night. He ECLISPES all sense of ration and reason for Bella. Even the things that are good for her ie. Jacob her sun. Like how man time have Smeyer have to come out and say that yall are the ones attracting nefarious motives to him. That she had to write Breaking Dawn in his perspective because yall wouldn't stop??

I felt Edward, while exhibiting very toxic behaviours, fit in better with Bella’s aspirations in life. With Jake she I feel like saw herself becoming like Emily, kind of on the sidelines, waiting for the boys to come home, while with Edward she felt like there was a version of herself that she could aspire to. I get it’s still problematic but at the same time from experience I know that it’s important to be inspired by your future and not bored by it.

Fair. Tbh maybe she saw Jacob and pictured her mother’s life with Charlie - doing the same things every day, fixing up bikes, sitting around the fire with friends and family, living in Forks her whole life. I get that especially for a teenager that can seem like she’s giving up on herself. It just sucks though because it sounds like such a lovely life
@lindam5186
@lindam5186 Жыл бұрын
If I remember the book correctly, she didn't hope he would come back which is even scarier- she just killed herself inside after their separation and lived only for the memory of him as a reminder of time when she still felt alive. But that's actually the dangerous thing about the situation. She didn't think of moving on, she didn't even want to, in fact, she refused to move on, because she believed that the love for Edward is the essence of her existence, but that's not love, that's in fact the obsession and lack of self-esteem. At this point, choosing Jacob actually feels like the right choice- choosing life and will to live instead of this dead state. Or, which is even more important, in other book she should've leave them both. They both tried to manipulate her and control her and if she chose herself instead of them, the series would actually end with a valuable lesson for young readers- to be strong enough to stay alone rather than be with someone with whom you are not free.

Somebody said it’s as is she accidentally made him a viable love interest for Bella, and had to drastically change that to make the readers team Edward again in eclipse.he deserved so much better than Bella, he deserved someone who cared about him. My views on Edward changed so much after I read Midnight Sun. The inside of his head was so, so anxious - the fast pace, the back and forth, the suffocating control, constant rumination, the hypervigilance. I had to re-read all the books after that. Granted, I don't believe it excuses his behavior toward Bella, ESPECIALLY with how controlling he got in Eclipse, but I guess it just helped me understand him a bit more. They definitely thought themselves above human beings, but the disdain for the wolves was pointed and personal. Ironic because in their stance as a superior being, they couldn't seem to be objective about how brilliant the Quilettes were. Bella saw Edward as a means to an end, nothing more. Edward was supernaturally attracted to her blood. (Meyer really has a thing for taking away free will. It’s alarming.) Bella was attracted to a pretti boi who could make her to appear to physically stop aging. None of the vampires, especially Carlisle, cared about feelings. That fuck turned a recent rape victim, knowing vampires are frozen in the headspace they were when they were turned (perpetual trauma) as to be a GIFT to Edward. No care if she wanted Edward. I had a friend who was “obsessed” like we all were, went completely into a hole after a breakup like Bella did and don’t think she would have reacted that way if she hadn’t saw the movie. Myself included. At the time, we perceived this as normal teenage drama when really it was toxic. Not if it was your natural response but to imitate because you think that’s how it’s supposed to be was very unhealthy.

I hopped on the twilight train late. I was already in college (19 or 20) and already engaged in therapy when my coworkers dropped these books on my desk. I was team Jacob and then team nobody because Jacob may have been a better fit for Bella but Bella was absolutely a terrible fit for Jacob. Outside of the fact that those vamps derailed his life, he was pouring into her knowing that she would/could never reciprocate. He was willing to accept the absolute minimum from her and I just kept imagining what that would look like for him 5 years down the road if Edward never came back. Maybe I would feel differently if he was an adult opening up to an adult being patient with her and holding space for her to process and heal from her trauma but I just kept coming back to she’s using this kid and knows she’s using this kid and the kid knows he’s being used but he’s happy with it. I just thought Jacob deserved better than to be a crutch and Bella deserved better than a controlling century year old boyfriend. Edward just deserved prison (I still can’t get over him explaining how he decided to be a vigilante when he went off his diet and Bella being chill like girl that man is a m*rderer.) Looking forward to your next videos because the way the book tackled the Renesme Jacob situation was the biggest ‘im sorry what😮?’ moment of the series. I don't know if it's in the books, but I like that the vampire council in the movie point out that Edward is barely more than a child in their eyes. They could have used his emotional state to manipulate him, but instead they acknowledge that he's young for a vampire and has never experienced a breakup before. I really liked that they essentially tell him to take some time to process it like a normal person and then come back if he's still heartbroken 100 years later. I also appreciate that they fully intend to uphold their rules once Edward forces their hand. He was acting like an entitled moody teen and it was nice to see him treated as one for once.

This was so fun while informative. It took me back to my high school days. I remember after reading New Moon, telling my friend to just tell me the rest of the series. She was like ‘no you might go back to it someday.’ I was like ‘I can assure you, I will never go back’ dead ass. First 2 books was enough. Even at 18, I could see the toxicity, the codependency, the over the top antics. I ultimately felt myself being extremely annoyed with Bella-her attitude, her actions…it was just so 🤮. Like girl 🤦🏽‍♀️ When you reminded us that she couldn’t even listen to music, I was like damn Bella. You let one boy own and destroy all sounds now? Lol okay

Based on the books, I fully agree that Jacob is the better choice. He was more mature and it was a healthier love for Bella to have. He could protect her, much like Edward could (although Edward was the reason why she was always in danger anyway). It's always wild to me how many more people were Team Edward than Team Jacob. In the movies, she really shouldn't be with either but I still think that Jacob was a better choice in the movies than Edward (if I HAD to pick one). Everyone that I spoke to seemed so upset at the prospect that Jacob's anger could hurt Bella but no one seemed to notice that Edward literally knocked through a glass table to protect her from Jasper because he was too strong. Whenever there is a love triangle in a story, I basically always like the person that will not be chosen. And it took me literally over 20 years to realize that it's because I love healthy love and that's less exciting for people as a whole.

@@StephAnya maybe he was trying his best to convince her he no longer cares for her wellbeing. I think to him the break up and the idea that he doesn’t love her, is just an illusion to trick her in order to keep her safe. I think he was playing that up, thinking he had to make it super convincing. This highlights his disconnect to her thoughts. He underestimated how quickly she could be convinced he lost interest in her. In his mind not caring for her is the last thing he can imagine, but to her it’s the first thing she thinks of. He went overboard and hurt her to prove it’s serious, and solidify that he has changed. Maybe leaving her in the woods was also a safety net for himself. Like if he really hurts her in a way he views as unforgivable, it might stop him from ever going back later. This is the only idea I can come up with. Wouldn’t be the first time Edward’s behavior is completely contradictory. Otherwise leaving her alone in the woods makes zero sense😂

Jacob brought light back into Bella’s life when she was going through her darkest moments. I remember reading New Moon and falling in love with Jacob and his warmth and kindness towards Bella. There’s a quote in the movie where Jacob is driving Bella home and she is laying her head on his shoulder and she says “You’re just warm, you’re like your own sun.” I’ll always be Team Jacob.

When he said “you’re not good for me” I always took it as him knowing it was a way he could keep her from wanting to be with him. Like break her heart so she could have a normal life. If he would’ve explained it as not wanting to put her in danger she would’ve still wanted him.

Eclipse is the worst of the books by far, the core three characters are all absolutely unbearable in that one. I think what I dislike the most about the books however is what a martyr Bella is in her own mind. She views everything that happens to her and everyone else's behavior as somehow being her fault to the point that she can't actually be held accountable to anything, because she'll just spiral into self-loathing until she has to be comforted lest she becomes suicidal. The narrative appears to want to frame this behavior as noble, when it's actually so destructive and completely unfair to the people around her. Not only can she not be held accountable, but she also strips others of any autonomy. If nothing can ever be your fault (because everything is hers) that also means nothing you do matters or has value. Having been at the mercy of someone with the same worldview, it's really gross and upsetting to me that anyone would romanticize that.

this was so interesting! i’ve been a huge twilight fan since I was a little kid but it’s been awhile since I’ve reread the books and I totally forgot how much the movies butchered jacob’s character. he seems so entitled and immature and manipulative in the movies so in recent years I’ve held a big grudge against him. I would still say I’m team Edward because he’s the only one Bella ever wanted but I no longer think of him as highly. It’s really interesting to recognize how manipulative he is and how much the movies manipulate us into thinking otherwise. I’m so excited to hear your perspective on Eclipse!

Thank you SO much for identifying that Bella was clinically depressed. That’s not something you simply get over because a lot of your power and agency is being siphoned by this illness. So many fans missed the mark on that. I related a lot to Bella on how she was depressed after a trauma (trauma also may not be an event, but a long time suffering) not with catatonia but with seeking distractions to not deal with my hard feelings. I eventually came out of it and look back on that time like yeh, that was serious, it could have been a lot worse, I could have developed disorders and comorbidities that became chronic. Teens have intense feelings that are often dismissed by adults but because they’re still growing up, cannot be expected to have fully developed capacities to cope with them. They need support. I have seen very capable strong adults crumble and cause worry for their loved ones. Recovering from trauma should be a forefront in the healing process. Glad Bella had her dad. Their relationship was the BEST I appreciated in the whole series. He never put her down even though he often didn’t know what to do and he reminded me of my own parents and close friends who never gave up on me ❤. P.S. I was always Team Bella. Team Bella. I did not stutter.

Also I saw this theory talking about how Bella being around the Cullens probably have a reaction in her body similar to using drugs (because Edward often says how enamored humans are with vampires) and they leaving Bella left her in a withdrawal situation and I think it's an interesting take. As far as Edward leaving her in the woods when he breaks up with her, I think it's one of 2 things: (1) he really wasn't capable of understanding her and so was thoughtless to the potential impact that would have on her (2) he did it in the worst way possible to make her hate him, be angry at him, so she had the best chance of letting go and moving forward. As far as him leaving, I think it was because he knew he wouldn't be able to leave her alone and stay away. That ended up hurting them both.

Seeing a lot of comments about Bella never really getting a chance to explore the relationship with Jacob romantically because of Stephanie and I agree. I also kinda think Stephanie is basically Bella. She’s obsessed with Edward. But objectively, I feel like the love triangle should’ve been even more intense with a greater question of who she would actually pick. Because what makes Edward different to everyone else for her is that he’s a vampire, he’s different. But Jacob is also a mythical creature and I just feel it would’ve been more interesting to see her fall really hard for that like she did with Edward and have to choose between them while actually being in love with both of them. But that’s just more for entertainment sake. In the books especially I always felt Bella had a superiority complex over Jacob which makes no objective sense given how she feels about Edward.

Thanks so much for this! It’s interesting how authors make note of the toxic tendencies in their YA relationships… and how they actually don’t translate well into film. So what happens? They make the “good guy-best friend” come across jealous and possessive and controlling in the movies to make the main love interest look like the better option. I started to see this in “Summer I turned Pretty” where in the books… Jeremiah was the friend who knew Belly so well and treated her with respect, while broody, quiet and distant Conrad was the guy Belly was persistent in being with, even though he belittles and treats her like crap. In the films, Conrad is more involved with the relationship and emotionally available to Belly, and her sweet, intuitive best friend Jeremiah is the one who gets jealous and borderline possessive of her.

Team Charlie? Then again, I wasn't a teen/young adult when I read these books for school. I fell in love with him when he had the shotgun and said, send him in. As for the triangle, I don't like either Jacob or Edward as portrayed in the movies, and in later books. Especially when Jacob attempts to kiss Bella w/o her permission. I support her punching/slapping him though the consequences were a bit painful. I'm more Team Alice there! Alice treated her as a friend and not quite an equal but at least closer to it than Edward did.

Even if it was due to Sue's husband's death of "heart attack." He put thought into his relationships--Edward, Jacob, Bella, the people he was serving as sheriff, the Cullens... You can see that in how he really did have an insight into their emotional basis. And he adored Alice. So that's a plus in my book too!

They weren’t on the Rez though. It was still Cullen territory. In the book when the pack did go out they already knew the Cullens had left therefore meaning they could phase or go over on that part of the treaty line. I genuinely think he wanted to hurt her so she would believe his words and not hold on to the idea of him coming back, he said himself humans forget. He expected her to move on. People move on or hold onto anger when someone hurts them and in his mind he didn’t think she would want him back. That idea kept him away as well. If he wanted the wolves to take over or ensure her safety he wouldn’t have been so against them being around Bella. It wasn’t just Jacob he had an issue with- it was the entire pack. He didn’t trust any of them. Alice was shocked when she saw Jacob and stated how unstable they were. He probably wouldn’t have left if he knew they were still phasing and would be around Bella. He knew Jacob had the bloodline but I don’t think he expected them to phase cause the previous generation didn’t. He didn’t know them being there triggered it.

The part in the books that turned me from team Jacob to team nobody was when imprinting was introduced. After that it seemed selfish and cruel of Jacob to try a relationship with Bella because he knew that eventually someone would show up and he would have no choice but to leave her. And it's evidenced by the the Leah/Sam/Emily thing that fighting it doesn't work. After that it really did feel like she was his wolfy beard, like if it was in the real non-fictional world it would be like if he knew he was gay in a small conservative town. And he loves his best girl friend and thought that would be enough or that it's what's expected so he actively pursued her without telling her that he's not fully attracted to her. Then one day when from her perspective everything is good he'll cheat on her because he has finally found a gay guy that he can actually be fully in love with. The whole imprinting thing was gross anyway, but the fact that it seemed designed by the author because not every reader was team Edward really added to the assassination of Jacob's character. Maybe it was a "see readers he'll get his own soulmate one day, guaranteed" but it always felt to me super gross because it's shown that there's no choice at all. Even if you ignore the child grooming aspect, Sam tried to choose Leah, his long time girlfriend over Emily a girl he'd just met but nope resistance to the imprint equals domestic violence, so the whole thing felt more like "see no you can't like Jacob either because he'll leave Bella or hurt her trying to stay".

I’ve come to the realization after rewatching the movies so many times that I don’t like Bella and Edward together because Edward was so controlling and manipulative, and Bella wanted to be a vampire to be with Edward instead of wanting to be a vampire because SHE was intrigued by the idea and experience. If she had talked about the things she liked about being a vampire then maybe I’d feel good about it, but like you said, codependency fuels her decisions. The biggest thing I came to realize as well is that I don’t want Bella and Jacob to be together either! But this time for Jacob’s sake. I guess I just feel like he deserves to feel chosen and loved fully. And he’d never get that with Bella. She has always used him and he’s accepted it and that’s just not what he deserves. Team Jacob ever since I was very young in elementary and middle school for sure. He seemed like more of a friend than an otherworldy being. Gave psychological safety albeit super codependent himself as well.

Hi! It's really interesting. When I read the books I always thought both relationships where toxic. No one seemed to have self esteem. By the end of the book Bella becomes wiser and doesn't let Edward control her. She actually tells him to include her in whatever decision he wants to make. He understands that Bella is far from being stupid and that he has been underestimating her all the time. They both start communicating and understanding each other. Jacob unfortunately suffers a lot watching from afar and makes all the rest of the pack suffer for him. Until Renesme is born he just suffers endlessly.

This is really satisfying to watch, thank you :) I also really liked these high school, then I was really put off by the movies, I felt like they were a bit boring and somehow failed to give the excitement the books did. I went through a phase of really hating the series haha. Now I’m a little more neutral, though I can’t say I really recommend it. But I was always fascinated by why I had such a strong response to it in high school, I can’t deny that I did, it was very strong and it lasted a while. Even though the relationships are messed up, this series hits on something deep in a lot of people. In high school, I understood that Bella would always choose Edward. But that sweetness in the initial friendship with Jacob, makes me team Jacob. I tend to excuse his later behavior because of that initial friendship. I would be really interesting to see what some healthy choices would look like…

As a kid i was team Jacob, because I thought he was so cute. But even reading the books I loved the way Bella and Jacob interacted. I couldn’t get over the fact that Edward left her and there was so much drama surrounding their relationship.

Based solely off of the books I would say that Jacob is the better man for her. I love how intuitive he is with her and in tune with what she needs. He can read her like a book and is very observant. She doesn’t even have to say anything. Edward is ambivalent in the beginning and controlling throughout most of the story. But comes around later on and acknowledges Bella’s autonomy and personhood. And even admits in Breaking Dawn, “Bella, I've had a bad habit of underestimating you”. But it took her literally dying and becoming a powerful vampire to get there.

This is a great breakdown! I have been watching The Summer I Turned Pretty and the triangle in that show makes me reminiscent to the Twilight days. I think The Sumner I Turned Pretty would make a great topic for one of your videos as well! You can definitely explore therapy related topics with those characters/plot line 😅

Loved the video, and love your channel! I'm a counselor-in-training and always find your videos helpful :) I'm team neither, since Jacob (spoiler alert if you somehow haven't read/watched Twilight yet) kisses Bella without her consent later on. But I agree that, without that detail, he's better for Bella than Edward is!
