I read a comment at some point about this cover that I think just nails both songs; The Simon & Garfunkel song is begging people to hear each other, talk to each other, and a warning of what will happen if we don't learn how to listen to each other The Disturbed song is the anger of people who haven't been heard, haven't been listened to and are tired of being ignored and hurt

To me, this song has always been a statement/warning about the lack of communication/empathy in a complex industrialized materialistic society with a herd mentality. It never felt like it was a song about my personal struggles, other than the struggle to thrive in such an environment.

I think that is how Melissa saw it in the 60s, however it takes on a new entendre in 2024 as the meaning you speak of is de rigeuer old news and nobody cares The Sound of Silence disregards mental health in favor of the fittest. ..

Totally agree I am confident Simon and Garfunkel intended it as what you described and it’s not about mental health.

It is so good to see someone else sees the waring in this song. I had to learn it for chorus in the 5th or 6th grade in the mid 70s. I always felt like it was an angry, distopic song. In today's society so many people suffer with loneliness yet we literally have the world at our fingertips. I see 10,000 people , maybe more... everyone talking yet no communication and no connection. It's really sad

A great concert where he emphasized we are not alone with our struggles from depression and addiction. Music is so therapeutic.

I did not serve my country as you did, and I must tell you thank you, and that you are with others who give a damn. I've been physically isolated for 3 years and I am so not in introvert. Haven't been in a park in ages. Last time I was I was "army crawling" knees and elbows into a cave in northern Iowa call "Hernando's hideaway".... left my cane outside and had to hold my camera behind my head to get a decent shot of being in the dark and looking out to the green and sunshine. Peace Brother. Music is so fantastic. I clean listening to Rammstein. I cook listening to R&B. I focus listening to classical because i don't get caught up in lyrics. Peace, man. Some of the best men in my life served on steel ships, ran into danger for my freedom, and spent years with the weight of the cost that it takes to be free.

I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel on the radio and this song has been and still is one that means a lot to me and when I heard this version, I learnt a new and different perspective. The singer made the song his own. In the beginning, the guy is singing very softly, with a bit of hesitation and fear, then, for whatever reason, everything changes. He sees through his darkness and sees ten thousand people who are also suffering in different, yet similar ways, and he lets his voice just ring out as he realizes the importance of commuication and community, joy even lends his voice more strength. He realizes, maybe for the first time, there is hope and a higher purpose in life, and his attitude about his lonely, miserable life and suffering changes from one of weaknesses to one where he can change these into strengths and use these strengths to help others. It's like Ren says, "...there were no real losers in physiological warfare, but there were victims and there were students." We can either be a victim and wallow in our victimhood, or we can learn from our failures, errors, and weaknesses, and use them as stepping stones to become better. Joy comes from looking without and helping others for the sake of just helping them. Life is a bit like a spoon. If we look in the spoon where it forms a little bowl, all we can see is ourselves, we are too focused upon ourselves; we are turned in. Thats kind of like what Timothy O'Leary said, "Turn on, tune in, drop out." But by flipping the spoon over and looking at the convex part now, yes we stll see ourselves, but we also see what is happening around us. Now we are "turned out."

Oh i really loved that part when Melissa Cross was talking about the mechanism of understanding and receiving love. I had that exact discussion with my Mother, trying to explain to her that i do not feel "Love" as explained by others. I don't have that within me. Like i understand that people just want what is good for me and want me to be well, but i don't Feel it, the Love, it is completely foreign to me. I too am living with chronic depression of the very severe grade for 45 years now and i know it will never go away. All we can do is dance with it and just pay attention to when we are about to hit a very dark place and try embrace it and push through it. No medication works on me so far, because this type of depression is not treatable, it is not something external that make me go to that dark place, it comes from nowhere and just blindsides me. Happiness?` What even is that? My Psychologist and Therapist once asked me: "Have you ever felt happy"? And i just replied to them: "No, not really, i have felt spontaneous laughter, regarding jokes n movies n such, but the feeling of "Happy" as it is generally depicted is not something i have any experience with or am familiar with.

Melissa, I have heard David speak of you often and very fondly. He always gives you props for teaching him so many things. This song actually lets the listener "hear" David's voice in all it's control and beauty... as most of Disturbed's songs are so heavy that at times it's difficult to hear what he can really do with his voice... although I must admit... I just love their heavy songs too! Thanks you guys.

Friday, May 3, 2024 OMG, the tissues I've 🤧 gone through since I discovered David Draiman and Disturbed performing their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" on April 29, 2024. That day I have to believe my spirit 🙏 guides (out of the blue) first led me to a cover video by Dan Vasc singing "Amazing Grace" which was phenomenal 👏 and then to the cover video of Disturbed and David Draiman singing this most POWERFUL, EMOTIONAL 😂rendition of Simon and Garfunkels "The Sound of Silence". I'm 75 and was 15 when they released one of the most popular classic songs of our time during the 60's. It is amazing how relevant it is today, actually I feel it is even more relevant than ever in so many different ways. ISOLATION, DIVISION, Aryan Christian Nationalist! I've spent days since listening and seeing, you'll notice I didn't say viewing, the many channel hosts and each of their reactions and have 😢 almost every time. It's funny that more males have gotten teary-eyed than females, just an observation. I also suffer from depression but there's always hope. Thanks from Diane

Guy from Denmark here who is looking into becoming a therapist in the future Love your videos, they way you read into the lyrics of the songs is just amazing, and really helped med see the deeper meaning in the songs, because usually I just feel them and don't think too much from it. If you need anymore suggestions for songs, Avenged Sevenfold have made some really good ones, my favorites being "Danger Line" "Buried Alive" and "Natural Born Killer". Also some Slipknot songs that are also really good imo are "Disasterpiece" and "Eyeless". Sabaton too is a good power metal band for working out alot of energy personal favorites being "Uprising" "Night Wishes" and "Ghost Division". Not sure if it is in your wheelhouse but another great cover in a similar vein is Help by John Farnham, a cover of the Beatles song that he completely makes his own. Much like Paul Simon loves the Disturbed version of Sound of Silence, or Trent Reznor loves Johnny Cash's version of Hurt (another brilliant one if you've not covered it), John Lennon loved John Farnham's version of Help, sung as a ballad as he had always intended. The best version of the performance is from 1989 with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra...

Same! Been to so many different psychologist, none has helped, I went to my 4th doctor and asked for help, went to a nurse first, that said I needed more help than she could give me, so made an appointment with a doctor, that said to me, that there was nothing they could do, and if I felt worse, I should go to an psychology emergency, and admit myself🤷🏻‍♀️🤪 I'm so happy I found a body therapist, that helps me a lot with my under expressed emotions, and ofcourse music! Especially this song❤ don't know were ill be without. Hope you get the help you need, and someone to talk to❤

From Micro: @saintdlee That is such a frustrating place to be in. I'm sorry you've been experiencing this, friend. Reciving support should be something easy somehow, as the last thing you want to have to do while you are struggling is to have to fight and advocate for yourself over and over. On top of it, repeated disappointment like this can make you feel like something would be wrong with you or that there's no help out there for you - which isn't true, but it can certainly feed the negative voices inside that use every hurt and disappointment against ourselves. I imagine that this situation is exhausting and frustrating for you. Having to try over and over, explain your story and needs, then to realize that what is offer to you is just not what you expected or what you need in the present moment. Personally, I'veexperienced this a little bit with finding the right therapist at first, then with physical medecine in general. With chronic illnesses, it becomes a recurring experience but to meet doctors who just don't know how to help, don't know how to diagnose, and even sometimes end up saying "it's the stress". Yikes - way to help, doc', I'll definitely feel better as soon as I walk out of your office. It's hard to feel like people expectd to help and understand you the most because they are professionals/experts in their field, just don't know how to help. It makes you feel like you're some kind of oddity and you shouldn't even except to be supported. It's hurtful to ask for help but to end up feeling like you were not heard and not understood. You're already sharing your most vulnerable sides to strangers, which takes an effing ton of energy to muster, so the disappointment hits greater when it feels like it led to nothing. If anything, *you* are doing what is needed and what is right by the very fact that you are trying. With therapists/psychology especially, it can be challenging to find the right person and approach for you at first. To me personally, it has taken a year or so before finding a good match, then she left to another place and I'm again in the process of trying > matching fails > trying again. Even though it hurts and is disappointing, this process helps in identifying what YOU need and what you don't want from a therapist either. Eech "fail" is not really one as it helps you also refine your understanding of your needs and what you expect from therapy. Somehow, the offers are so diverse that it's an entire world to explore in itself. I do hope that you will find a good match for you soon. You absolutely deserve to feel supported and that it is something acquired - not something to fight for anymore.

I'm opposite the older I get the worse things get are harder to deal with.. guess maybe I'm just tired of putting up the barrier.. I've had tremendous loss in my life and just wanna live for once
@HeartSupport
@HeartSupport 3 ай бұрын
From Micro: @markoleary3999 It makes sense to feel that way, friend, especially in light of the loss that you've experienced in your life. For some of us it feels like as we get older, the more the weight of everything we've experienced keeps piling up. The barrier you've put up to protect yourself is more and more fragile, and it's hard to see it becoming so thin over time. It's understandable to just feel tired of always having to be strong and keep things together. Each loss, each hardship, adds to the load, and it can feel like you're never getting a break. When you say you're tired of putting up the barrier, it makes me think of how draining it is to constantly guard yourself against more pain and disappointment. It's like you've been in survival mode for so long, and now you're just hoping for a moment to truly live, to feel free from the constant pressure and pain that life has pushed you through. Wanting to live for once, without the heavy burden of past losses and current struggles, is something you absolutely deserve to experience. Just feeling peace, finally, and a chance to experience life without the constant waves of sadness and exhaustion. It's not just about surviving anymore; it's about wanting to truly live, to have moments of joy and peace without the constant dread of what might come next. Feeling tired of the barrier means you’re yearning for authenticity, for a life where you don't have to hide behind defenses all the time. It's about wanting to be yourself without fear, to feel emotions without being overwhelmed by them, to connect with others without the fear of loss hanging over you. You’ve been through so much, and it’s completely understandable to want to step out from under that weight and find some light. I hope so much for you to have the possibility to feel that peace within. Keep standing up for yourself, friend. Keep pushing through. Keep reaching out and being open about about the way you feel. Keep building on the support system you might need. This journey that is called life can be a beautiful adventure yet sometimes feels like a curse. You don't have to go through it on your own, especially during times when it's becoming even more difficult. :heart:

this song is one of the ones that help me deal with pain points in my life. My father was a fan of the original performer of the song (Simon & Garfunkel). They have many other songs that find their way straight into the heart. I also want to add a couple of other songs to this, which are kind of power songs for me. First of all, I'm attaching a Finnish band called Apulanta and for their song "Lost in to machine" I chose a video with English lyrics kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnu9lXxnpcmdf6csi=U8O2gNYTgp_Z0uo9 Second, I chose The Rasmus' song "Elefantin weigh" as a re-version. The original performer is the Finnish artist Ellinoora and her song is beautiful to listen to. but here is the elephant's weight - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpKbeJdndql9hKcsi=gjyLLjl-Jm-APO3O

@@0nfir34h1m Maybe don't blindly trust what The Golden Boy says. Did you know His book straight up says that women aren't allowed to speak in church? And just to make sure there are no misunderstandings, the very next line states that if they have any questions, they must wait until they get home and ask their husbands. It's in one of The Corinthians.

I am too lazy to browse through all comments and I just recently discovered your channel. I appreciate your content and the way you produce your videos (not to let that aside). Please keep up with what you are doing on YT an in real life. Maybe the linked piece is a bit too much to dig into them, but have a look into Nightwish (symphonic metal if you want to put a name on name it). This piece in particular is very interesting for you I guess. I'll spare you with details in case you are aware, if you are not, I'd recommend to investigate a little bit before watching this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGW5l6xrrqisY8U Nightwish - The Poet and the Pendulum (live) p.s.: Always choose live recordings for Nightwish, it is music in the end and they are even better live than on studio recordings.

Well, world has changed in the past 30 years. People today don't care about each other, they only want to compete, lots don't even know what "Empathy" means. We are taught by society to be a-holes to one another. Thats why I think society is getting lost by these "stay at home" jobs and not providing means of communication between us. It's getting lost and that's the reality. We used to be social animals because we needed to be (before Tv, Videogames, Internet, etc). Now some thrive in just talking s*** about others behind a keyboard. There's society for you. Thats why I admire David Draiman (and don't get me wrong i prefer is metal tracks :P). Man stopped a show to talk to a girl in the audience because he felt something was really wrong. Who does that today "for real"?? We know when it's true and when it's not and you know its true here kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6uQdYimq6p3fKM And what Melissa said is true, some judged and still judge today Metal or Hard Rock and usually the best lyrics come from them cause they actually write their feelings not like pop artists who have writers doing it for them...

I, too, suffer from depression, i heard for the first time the cover of this song on tik tok, but a remix version of it. I know for some it doesn't sound the same, but the beat in it hits different. Now it's one of my favorite songs. In case if anyone is wondering the remix is by Cyril.

I'm a long time survivor,I suppose is the best way to say it, of severe depression and anxiety. Like Melissa (omg legend!! fangirl squeeee) being alone is always quiet and dark... honestly much of what she says through her commenting absolutely chimes in me. -- Now besides this, music is my escape, when the litany in my head gets to be too much the headphones go on and I run away to my 'friends' Disturbed, Linkin Park, Ren and a host of others, and they drown out the voices until I can get back on top of it. I can honestly say that without music I'm not at all sure if I'd still be here. - ok done with my wall of text. Take care, and remember we aren't alone. Love and hugs to all who want or need them.

Why bother yourself with what other people think of you? I believe you’ll find more peace with yourself if you don’t worry about other people’s view of you as long as you do right.

From jpaga: @Eve_of_Hearts Getting out of bed, dressing nicely, and taking care of yourself are not pointless, because *you* are not pointless. As others have mentioned, shifting your attention from what others care about to what you care about will do you good. You are absolutely deserving of thought and effort, and putting time and energy into yourself will never be meaningless. I think trying to figure out what you like and care about is what’s most important. It may be cloudy at the moment but I don’t doubt that there are things out there that will make you look forward to the days ahead!
