Don't get married until you see your future spouse actually live in accordance with what they say. They must actually do the things they talk about. See it with your own eyes, and don't trust your feelings. DO NOT take them on their word, some people can be so charming and will convince you. And when you see their true character, it's too late.

Before I got married, I thought the whole adage of "people change after marriage" was a load of bunk. But he was a totally different person behind closed doors than he was publicly. He was Mr. Happy-Go-Lucky, water-off-a-duck's back, never angry, never mean person --in public. Behind closed doors, he was seething with anger and expressed it passively-aggressively, pretty much nonstop. So you don't always know before you marry that they are a problem. That said, there probably were red flags that I could not recognize...having been raised in an abusive home by a narcissistic mother, made my red flag detector completely out of whack.

I am 61 years old and I have experienced mental abuse as child from my Mom😢I see how my lack of self-worth has impacted my children (adult children now)🥺💔💜🙏 I was also married to a man who mentally abused me. However, I am finally learning to set boundaries in my relationships🥰💜🙏 I am so grateful God has brought me to this point in my life! There is pressures in this world to be in a relationship….however I know God brought me to this point in my life so I can seek Him wholeheartedly 🥰💜🙏 I can finally have confidence in the person God created me to be🤗🥰💜🙏 I have been called crazy and have been told “ I gone to far for my religion”. I am humbled by these remarks. If I am crazy about anything let it be Jesus🤗🥰💜🙏 If I remain single I am completely at peace because I live to bring honor to Jesus 🥰💜🙏

@colleenq7 Women were created for men and because of men. Not to show an aspect of who God is. The Bible never says that at all. God made the woman for the man , she is the glory of MAN but man is the glory of GOD. It is men who mirror God's image on this earth. Created to be husbands and fathers just like God is both.

Thank you for this message. I am really looking forward to next week's because I have been married for 19 years and most of them have been filled with some physical, but mostly emotional/verbal abuse. It can be really hard to try and figure out how God feels about this, and not enough pastor's/teachers are teaching about it. I love how Lysa pointed out that the majority of us aren't seeking out a divorce, because that can kind of be the connotation around this subject. I have stayed for 19 years DESPERATELY trying to save our marriage, but to the detriment of myself. I no longer have any confidence or self-worth and I have been asking God for wisdom as I try to navigate this journey and figure out whether or not I should stay or leave. This definitely isn't something I had planned for my life, and it for sure wasn't taking the easy way out. This last 19 years have stolen a piece of me that I can never get back, but I'm praying that there's hope for the next 19 years. When I got married at 18, I was happy and had so much life in me... life that has slowly been drained with every heart-shattering put down. There HAS to be something more that God is calling me to because I can't fathom living the rest of my life in this kind of heartache and pain.

Emotional abuse is worse than physical. It gives you complex ptsd. OTRS ongoing traumatic relationship syndrome. Leads to depression. Panic. Etc. as you get older it affects more and more. There is no reason to tolerate it. And often escalates into more physical abuse over time. Find help. The church says stay. Pray. It gaslights abuse so often. Find support. Save your self. Please.

@@tinabrooks4397 I've heard it is estimated that around 70% of all pastors or ministers fall into the spectrum of NPD. If you think about it, it makes sense. Is it their need to "serve the lord" or is it there need to be the leader, praised, looked at in high regard etc.? One dead giveaway to this is their blatent hypocrisy. Rules don't apply to them. They can do things 10x worse and it will be divided by 10. If you do something 1x and it will be amplified 10x (I call this the "Divide by 10, multiply 10 rule").

@@tinabrooks4397 Do you have Biblical grounds for divorce? If you do, you are free to exercise the liberty to divorce if not unfortunately it is for better for worse till death do us apart. We all have a choice in who we choose to commit to in our life when we take those wedding vows to God and spouse. If we have chosen wrong it's our bed to lay in,following and trusting God to provide what we need in spite of the bad choice we freely made.

I attended a Christian seminar years ago, about separation and divorce recovery, and the only thing l remember of a very good seminar, is the introductory lines of the first speaker..."So many of you have come out of a marriage where you have been fighting for years to make your marriage work, and it has still disintegrated. I am here to tell you, that it takes two to make a marriage work.... you did your best...but without both people in the relationship working to make a marriage good, no marriage can survive. You know you have done everything you could, so donot carry guilt. Come away and heal." That was 25 years ago. God has done wonderful healing in me, and corrected my view of my worth, and l now know better who it is healthy for me to be with, and how to make good boundaries in my relationships...for happiness and wholeness. Hope this is helpful for someone. ❤🙂

Lysa, when you spoke of people saying hurtful things because they didn’t want to catch “divorce fever”, I thought of my own situation when my husband suddenly died. I was 47, and he was 54. People said the strangest things to me, or worse, avoided me. Partly because they didn’t know what to say, and I think it was also because my husband’s death had shattered their illusion that God blesses the faithful with a long, happy life. That uncertainty and seeming randomness upset them, and they couldn’t face it. I think that’s part of what you and others have experienced too. I think it’s less about theology and more about fear.

It has been a challenge cause he is actually a good man and I thought that by staying, I was going to add to his and my sons God's sanctuary, that maybe they would except and receive the love of Christ but I have been mentally emotionally and physically annihilated. He controll everything of mine which I've slowly given up. The only thing he cannot take away from me, is my love for my Lord. Please pray God gives me clear wisdom in how to move forwards, with this man where I am allowing him to sin as he loses his temper with me or do I leave?

Thank you for speaking for the weak and vulnerable. I've begun to believe that I have to give up a calling in ministry because I married an abusive person. I feel, now that the separation is coming soon, that I have ruined my testimony, but I also can't take the abuse or live a lie. It is very defeating and makes me feel worthless. All I want to do is spread the gospel and be a voice for the voiceless. I fight for abuse victims and the anti-divorce teaching and it is very lonely and isolating. Another thought - I think it's sad also that the only role in the church assumed for women is homemaker since not everyone will be married with kids. I have a child, but it breaks my heart that single women are not utilized in ministry more, but devalued, when our role in this life is to spread the gospel, not to be married.

While separated, if your husband wakes up and comes to himself, and agrees to go to counseling for his abuse, and really starts to treat you right, FOR REAL, then you know he is serious. If the separation makes him think he can have an affair, and he goes out and has one, then you know your situation, and will have a biblical reason for a divorce. Some men are abusive, but strangely too passive to leave their victim. Getting a LEGAL separation, is very helpful to the abused person. I think filing for a separation gives the victim space to begin to heal, without getting divorced before they should. It also causes the other person to play their true hand, so that the victim has a clearer picture of how to move forward. All Grace to you, in all ways!

I'm praying and in tears. I too was a victim of emotional abuse and God blessed me with an awesome husband. But I didn't know that it was called that until I read a Danielle Steel book in 2000. It hurts still. But just yesterday when I realized another pastor respected for many years didn't believe a women was abused for 2o years. He even made her leave church for divorcing an abuser. He is in Jail for 21 years now. So satan is now reminding me, and yes I am a sinner. But one time my pastor at the time told me when I was blamed for my x in jail by my parents and other Christians. My preacher told me, " You are just good at that. Take it all on. " Now 25 years later all the SBC stuff and God is on the thrown. But I cried over too many younger women replying how hurt they were and another preacher that are called by God allowed that man to stay in the church and made the women leave. We are called as women to help this next generation.I need calming now. But we must ..

My family origin: I was not wanted, I was supposed to be a boy- it was a joke but not really. From age 7-teens I was ungrateful, inconsiderate, selfish & disrespectful. Still fighting these words @ 54, I gained some independence. Now in a marriage (15 yrs) - I am back to being dependent- my value in this blended family is not recognized. I am silenced, if I speak there is conflict & it is my fault

This has been very good. Thank you so much for the Therapy and Theology. I learned years ago from my own study that when God brought the curses upon Adam and Eve, God gave the man authority to rule over the woman. I believe at that moment and forward that men in their sinful nature defined and determined women's value and role in society. They were treated as property. Fast forward, Jesus comes and sets mankind free from sin and from the roles defined under the era of the Curse. When we read through the Gospels, we see Jesus, redefine the value of women. Not only the Samaritan women, but Jesus chose Mary to go and proclaim the good news that He had risen to the disciples. He could have chosen anyone; He chose her. I love what Galatians 3:23-29 says, the Law being our guardian until Christ, and now in Christ, there is neither Jew nor gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

I have a question: Where do you get the idea the men were off to war? The chapter doesn't say anything about that. So the reference would be helpful for others to "read rightly" as you suggest. The chapter also makes mention of her husband several times sitting with the elders and rising to praise her..like.... he's there seeing it for himself. I think there may be a bit of reading into scripture here vs. letting scripture explain how a woman is to be a good helper, and partner. Which is the whole reason we were created. 🤔 I think that there is some great stuff here but I'm hesitant to believe this is talking about a "valiant warrior woman".

Devaluing a woman or man is like Devaluing what God created. We are his creation. Telling women to remain silent sometime comes from a place of weakness. Being unable to address the predator so people control the woman.

Question: At 40:00… after the statement recounting Jesus asking the woman, “Do you believe me?” And the woman replying “Yes…I believe” (You are the Savior, Son of God), I’m confused why Criss interjects “…because of ole Peter, the heir of Christ”). I am not Biblically illiterate. Please explain what Criss was implying. Thank you.

Hi! Cress actually said, "...Thou art the Christ..." and he was quoting Peter in Matthew 16:16. Jesus asked his disciples who people were saying that He was. Then he asked his disciples, "Who do you say that I am." Peter declared Jesus to be the Christ: Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Cress is highlighting a link in scripture where both Martha and Peter rightly declared Jesus to be the Christ, even though many people weren't sure what to make of him. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit revealed this to Peter. No doubt, Holy Spirit revealed it to Martha, too. I think the idea is that it further shows the value God (Jesus) placed and places on women, to give Martha a major revelation about who Jesus is, just as He gave the revelation to Peter, Jesus' "right-hand man."

Jesus said to Mary Magdalene, go and sin no more; he did not say go hang out with all those pharasees that wanted to stone you when they were equally as guilty as you. Also, he didn't say go hang out and befriend with those that don't refrain from condemning you. If someone rehabilitates from being an alcoholic that doesn't necessarily qualify them to be able to go by a bar or go into a bar without being tempted to drink. God gives us supernatural power through the holy spirit, but since he has created each one of us individually, he knows whatever person's threshold is in every category. We might use expressions that are not correct, try to use a language that is not correct, joke and even maybe flirt; and it is probably all sin, that we need to allow the holy spirit to further do a deeper work in our subconscious but he who is without sin in any category, not just sexual sin, but in any category, throw the first stone. I don't care if you drink, do drugs, embezzle, lie, abuse of any category, pride in your image, or what sin you committ, it is a sin just like a sexual sin. So when you are perfect like Enoch, Elijah, etc., Then come and throw the stone at me. I am not ready to hav a friendship with anyone until I am ready. People don't want anyone disrespecting their boundaries, but they feel entitled to disrespect anyone else's boundaries when ever they feel like. That is entitlement narcissism; I don't care how you try to camoflouge it.

Would really like to look at “side” more closely. I’ve heard it explained that possibly mankind was created first, then at this point man and woman were created. Eve days later that God told them (her included) about not eating of the tree - when only the Adam (mankind) would have been present. This would be such an bigger argument for equal image of God. Not woman being subservient.

America has more toxicity in the marriages bc of loneliness. People are distance and isolated than other parts of the world. Financial prosperity is a blessing but that can lead a nation in general to feel entitled. The conveniences people enjoy outside of homes in USA, the same mentality of conveniences = perfection they're looking for in marriages too. Entitled, easily offended, making small things bigger. When there is very little closeness in the culture, mental crisis and toxicity in the marriages are unavoidable.

The person who saids their faith is founded only upon the Rick, should not look at my past, or any language sin that I committ to determine if Christians are hypocrite or not. The truth of the matter is all of Jesus disciples were hypocrites until they were converted after Jesus death and pentecost. The one that never repented was Judas because of his love of money, power, entitlement, always looking down at the poor, and he was not happy b cause Jesus didn't give him what he wanted which was for Jesus to over throw the Roman Empire, Establish a Jewish empire full of wealth, greed, and power but Jesus showed him that the eternal kingdom was not of this world, or consisted of the things that this world consisted of. People can judge you all day long if they want; only God knows their list of sins, only God read their past sins and heart. That is none of my business and neither do I care to know them. I am not God. Everyone should be watching their own, and not some one else. Whatever happened to mind your own business and focus on your personal growth.
