Wesley Snipes was still new to action movies when this came out. Passenger 57 (1992) was the first film where he displayed his martial arts skills! So seeing him share the screen with Sylvester Stallone was awesome to see!
@thesplawn Жыл бұрын
Fun Fact: He actually quit his Major League role to film Passenger 57 to which the writers responded by recasting his character Willie Mays Hays with Omar Epps. As an added way to throw shade at Wesley Snipes, they had his character parodied(for lack of a better term) as a wannabe action star on the side of his baseball career where his character co-stars with the actual Jesse Ventura in a overly cheesy action movie. Seeing Jesse Ventura in this movie reminded me of that interesting bit of useless knowledge lol.

The 3 seashells came about because the screenwriter (Daniel Waters) wanted there to be something futuristic about the bathroom. He couldn't come up with an idea so he called a friend to ask for one. The friend had decorative seashells in his bathroom and thus the 3 seashells were born. Stallone has said he was told by one of the writers that shells 1 & 2 are used like chop sticks to pull out the poop. Shell 3 is used to scrape out the excess. This is the closest to an official answer.

Screenwriter Daniel Waters got the idea of Demolition Man from watching films like THE TERMINATOR and Lethal Weapon and blended the two together, but instead of using time travel, he thought the hero and the villain should be cryogenically frozen and wake up 100 years in the future where crime is outlawed and when these two face off, the future isn't big enough for the both of them.

Although I must say that I do really appreciate the thought they put into the process of securing and rehabilitating prisoners in this time. Because the technology is something that scientists have been trying to figure out for years now. Hibernation like that over extended period of time without causing the subject to age or have to expend or consume calories to maintain their life processes have been something scientists been trying to figure out for a while now to use mostly in future deep space travel
@rscott7651 Жыл бұрын
That's cool. The problem I see with hibernation like in this film and Alien is your muscles. They can atrophy just from being in bed for a few weeks. After months or years of being asleep with no activity, you'd be too weak to move if not permanently disabled. Your body can even stop breathing because it's so weak. It makes me think we'll never be able to survive a trip to Mars. Astronauts would be physically helpless by the time they got there.
@psycho42069 Жыл бұрын
@@rscott7651It doesn't take that long to get to Mars. Less than a year. Astronauts heading there would do exactly like they do on the Space station, exercise with resistance bands and treadmills/stationery bikes etc. One movie that shows a good example of how they would stay in shape is The Martian.
@rscott7651 Жыл бұрын
@@psycho42069 I don't think anyone in real life can say exactly how long it will take to travel to Mars, especially when you factor in anything that can go wrong like health issues among the crew. I was talking about long term hibernation though. The idea of waking up and just moving around like normal is unrealistic. Atrophy can affect people differently, but your body deteriorates from inactivity. I've spent a good amount of time in a hospital bed, and I pretty much had to learn how to walk again. My legs were like jelly. And I wasn't asleep in zero gravity for months. Hibernation would only work if there was already a hospital on Mars where astronauts could rehabilitate when they get there. They'll be alone and sickly.
@psycho42069 Жыл бұрын
@@rscott7651 Your points on hibernation are (or could be) all valid, I'm not arguing with them. The travel time to Mars though is no guess. We've sent many probes, rovers, etc there and we KNOW it takes roughly 8 months to travel to Mars from Earth. There is a window that the planets need to be in the correct alignment, and that window only comes around about every 2.5 years so that's about how often we can send missions to/from Mars, but nobody would need to hibernate for that journey. Like I said, astronauts have spent longer periods on the space station.

@@psycho42069 We haven't sent humans though. Living people on board changes everything. Hibernation during the trip to Mars is something I've heard speculation about to lower costs and stress among the crew, I just see a lot of issues with it. Astronauts that spend months on the space station still need medical care afterward. There won't be any on Mars. I don't see them being fit enough to do anything when they get there whether they hibernate or not.

I feel like Demolition man could be a prequel to Judge Dredd. 😅

For Coy MDK was reference to M.O.D.O.K. the writers gave a nod to comics since this film is done in a comic matter. A violent supervillian out of time placed in an environment without violence to be stopped by a out of time supercop using violence to catch him. It's a comicbook if I ever heard one.

You have to see Stallone's CLIFFHANGER, it's from the same period and it's another good action movie.

Demolition Man is massively underrated with surprisingly accurate predictions of the future.

At the House of the Future the Smart Toilet featured a built-in bidet and blow dryer. I postulate that the three seashells are a wash, a dryer, and then a flusher button.

The eternal question of the Three Seashells still haunts my dreams after watching this movie, even 25 years later.

Smarter folks than I have figured you use two shells in a claw configuration to “grab” larger waste matter, while the last shell is used to scrape the rest of the matter out. Best guess anyway. Lol

I think you're confused about which party has been using the state to ban content/speech it doesn't like while pushing its very specific brand of morality on the public.

@ 53:18- The blue matter, freezes everything! While it's been critiqued as a generic action film, there's an underlying commentary on our modern society in this film, which is almost eerie in its prophetic comprehension.
