A lot of people misinterpret Lily's character and dont seem to grasp that Lily was NEVER trying to sabotage Nina or steal Nina's role. All of that was just Nina projecting her insecurities on to Lily. Any scene where Lily looks evil or says something evil was all in Nina's head.

Worked at a movie theater when this came out. We had to put a disclaimer at the box office because multiple people were bringing their older parents to see what they though was going to be a straight forward ballerina movie and came storming out to guest services half way through demanding a refund. Was quite hilarious.

This movie is so sad. Just the relationship between her and Mila being twisted by all the mental illness and obsession. Mila's character literally just wants her to have fun and let loose, but her mom and the director are just constantly pushing her and making her suspicious of everything. Like there's one person in her life trying to just be friends, and everything inside (and outside) is telling her that that person is the enemy.

I'm so glad tara caught the weird language around her mom and the parallel of her mom's "sweet girl" with the teacher's "little princess" I definitely think the movie is implying some abuse there from her mom which would explain nina's sexual repression, as her only experience has been traumatic the teacher also does ask her if she's a virgin and she says no, but I don't believe she would've actually willingly slept with anyone at that point, she could've been lying to him of course but I feel like it's further evidence towards this theory

Sarah Lane, a soloist from ABT, was Natalie Portman's dance double. Sara was a brilliant dancer who did not initially get enough credit for the true dancing in this film. IMO partly because Natalie Portman acted the hell out of her character, and it was so easy to believe she performed more of the advanced technical dancing than she actually did!

The one thing i like is how innocent and childish she is mostly bc of her mom. She lives with her mom in a childlike pink bedroom and than slowly she starts to mature, experiment with bolder makeup and different partners. Until ultimately her innocent is gone but its her choice. Her madness set her free.

The subway almost becomes a living, breathing entity in Aronofsky films. It's like a realm to another dimension of time and space. It's crazy. If you two haven't watched his first film Pi, you need to check that one out. I don't think there are many reactions to that on YT.

Natalie Portman's Oscar winning role. Also, got a few nominations in total, including, best picture. Since the film was on a low budget, production took a holt where Natalie had to maintain a thin physique for about 9 months and continued to train for extended period. When she was little, she did ballet, which, helped, but she did have a dance double for the more difficult dance moves that she couldn't do. That has sparked a whole controversy of its own considering how they campaigned that she did her own dancing. It's not entirely untrue, but it undermined the ballerina who doubled for her. It's just as weird as big blockbusters touting no CGI when there is a substantial amount polishing these films that go unnoticed.

As an ex ballet dancer trained by Russians my entire life this movie and Natalie’s character resonated with me so much that this instantly became one of my all time favorite films. It really captured so perfectly the stress we go through as dancers and the drive and need to be perfect. Albeit it’s greatly exaggerated here for dramatic effect but it’s pretty damn spot on.

It's not clear that Nina dies at the end: Many - including Natalie Portman - interpret the blood as a metaphor for her becoming a grown woman. What's clear is that the movie mirrors the story in Swan Lake. The question is who dies in the end: Is it really Nina, or is it just the little girl that her mother locked her into? Either way, a great movie and a performance for the ages from Natalie. (And yeah, she did win an Oscar for it).

So a year after this movie came out a professional ballerina came out saying Natalie Portman did NOT do all of her dance sequences, and that many of them were actually done by her with performance capture technology used to digitally alter her face to look like Natalie. Sadly, a lot of people who voted for Natalie at most of the awards shows that they voted for her because of her dancing skills, and when many of those voters said they would not have given the awards to Natalie after they learned that the ballerina actually stood up for Natalie saying she should’ve won solely because of her acting ability alone. It’s an extremely rare scenario in which someone wants credit for what they’ve done while also giving credit to the person who they did the work for.

I think she definitely just wanted people to know that some ballet skills can only be mastered after years of training, but that didn't negate the fact that Natalie trained relentlessly for a year before filming. That whole controversy was weird, and I put blame more on the studio for trying to push the narrative that Natalie did everything. Natalie, Mila, and Sarah Lane (the professional ballet dancer) all supported each other.

Fun fact: the director paid for the rights of the anime movie 'Perfect Blue' (highly recommend it) to have a lot of the more interesting psychological shots in this movie and adapt them from animation into filming (bathtub scene, seeing herself in reflections, seeing copies of herself passing her). He thought the psychological horror of imposter syndrome was portrayed so well that he wanted to implement it for his own movie about the same themes.

Natalie did train ballet prior to this movie, but when she is en pointe or doing pirouettes, it is a body double, sometimes her face is projected on the double. Her double came out after the movie, because she didnt like that Natalie got all the praise and it was giving the idea that you could be a ballerina after training for a year, but you need to practice from a really young age. Natalie did work hard, learned some dancing skills and did a great job acting in this movie tho. Deserved her oscar, but she does not have to pretend she is a ballerina/did all the dance work herself.

Nina was suffering from either paranoid schizophrenia or some sort of stress induced psychoses, or maybe even both. I lean toward schizophrenia more because I have experience with it. A lot, maybe even most, of what happens to her is in her head. Lily never is actually trying to sabotage her, she views what Lily does as slights against her because she's envious of the freedom she represents. Nina has been raised by an overbearing and toxic mother and as such is obsessive and calculated in everything she does. That's why she had such an issue letting go. Even the end i think is all in her head, it's not a struggle between her and Lily. It's a struggle between two sides of herself and in the end the darkness wins and its perfection.

When I see this in the cinema I got so lost in the movie. I was so silent and I walked out from that viewing saying that was one of the best movies I have ever seen. It made me want to experience my first ballet and I actually went to see the Russian Ballet company perform Swan Lake at my local theatre. It was amazing. But yes this film is incredible 👌🏻🙌🏻

should check out Perfect Blue by the late great Satoshi Kon which was a major inspiration for this movie. Aronofsky also lifted a scene from Perfect Blue in requiem for a dream in the iconic bathtub screaming scene which was lifted straight from Perfect Blue.

I really really think that Nina’s mom 100% s*xually ab*sed her daughter. I think that during Nina’s dream scene with Lily was real but that it was actually her mom since Lily called her “my sweet girl” and it was only Nina’s mom who called her that. There’s also something SUPER eerie about how obsessive her mom is, drawing Nina like a crazy person. Even her mom insisting having her undress in front of her and the cake licking thing too. It really just made me feel that Nina was driven to utter madness because of years enduring her mom’s ab*se. Obviously there was a lot more than paranoia with Nina, but clearly her mom messed her up even further. It’s such a trippy insane movie
