Heya Matt. I've been a big fan of the channel since day one, but this has been by far my favourite test. Not that I want to get an i30 Hybrid (having to shut down that useless speed sign recognition each time I started the car would drive me insane), but I love the road trip format. It was just such a chill but still informative way to test the car, with a bit of outside interest to complement it. It would be a great USP for the channel as well. Hopefully Mrs Campbell will let you out to do lots more of these. Maybe an EV across Australia. Can it really be done?

I have one of these. It's annoying that it doesn't recognise that school zones aren't 24/7. It will pick up on the speed limit sign and scream at you you're speeding when you're not. Fortunately as all cars are designed for the speedo to lie to you according to Waze it's only 2-5kph out. Not that big a deal. Especially in Sydney where you can rarely drive the sp limit anyway with all the traffic. EDIT I posted this before I got to the part where you mentioned the school zone issue.

Great review. Regarding 11:30, hopefully Hyundai has been able to sort out these safety system glitches since this review. Wow, 4.5 L/100km for a country road trip is impressive. Wonder what fuel figures are achievable when driven about in the city??
@therightcar8 ай бұрын
Hopefully. Apparently it’s a bit of a known issue with misalignment of the radar in the bumper, but I didn’t hit anything!! I was seeing 3.8L in urban driving as part of the launch.
@nicholasmatthews59897 ай бұрын
@@therightcar Thanks. Hope that they are able to resolve the misaligned radar issue. Great to hear that you were achieving an excellent 3.8 L/100km in urban driving during the launch (with having a 42 litre tank, that's about a 1,100km range of city driving, whilst with your country drive of 4.5 L/100km gives it about a 933km range). The i30 sedan hybrid appears to be very effective. Also, thanks for commenting about the headlights during your night time drive, and informing us that they are effective. This is good information. The mentioning of headlights performance is not that common with car reviews in general, probably due to time constraints. It is fantastic to see a review of a sedan taken on a long trip.

@therightcar9 ай бұрын
Thanks for that question. My personal tastes push me in the direction of the Toyota. I like the powertrain more, the safety tech is better implemented, and the reality is that Toyota has been doing hybrids for a lot longer, and I know people with 10-15 year old hybrid models that don’t have problems apart from occasional battery things ($2500 replacement for a Prius C after 220,000km, for instance).

Can you turn that speed sign thing off until further notice or do you have to do it every time you start up? How buried is it in the menu system? That is, how many "clicks" or actions does it need to turn it off? One thing I liked about my daughter's old Yaris was that you could just hit a button to turn off the annoying intrusion and it would stay off.
@therightcar8 ай бұрын
It has to be turned off every time you restart the car, if you don’t want it in. It’s simpler in the lower grade models as you can do it through the steering wheel controls (so you can keep your hands on the wheel once you learn the sequence, it’s only a few clicks).
@SteveJ0hnson8 ай бұрын
@@therightcarThanks for the answer! And great review, cheers. I guess I'll have to try it out to see how annoying it is, but I don't think car manufacturers realise how much these little things piss people off. I'm annoyed by my wife's Swift always putting the music on every time the car is started, and that's only one steering wheel button press to kill. That and the sat nav that was out of date from new and can't be updated... Stupid stuff like that is enough to make me say "thanks but no thanks".
@gort39692 ай бұрын
@@SteveJ0hnson100% the manufacturers know it's all bullshit but there is a cancer in this industry called ancap which has a lot of pull with regulatory bodies. Every car made these days has a 5 star rating as far as actual safety is concerned (crumple zones etc) but they'd probably become irrelevant and go out of business if they didn't invent new reasons to get a 5 star rating. Hence it turns into this clown show. I wonder how many accidents these idiotic "safety" systems caused just from having people take their eyes off the road in order to turn it off while driving

Great review but one question was left, how long will the battery last and what will it cost to replace after its 8 year warranty? This will significantly impact the cars resale value and probably negate any fuel cost savings over a non hybrid. Hyundai would have this data. You should also confirm if the battery warranty is for full replacement or pro rota on kms and age. It’ll be in the fine print.
@therightcar4 ай бұрын
Allow me to get my crystal ball out… Battery tech is ever-changing, and just as anyone who owned an early Prius: when the battery eventually needed replacement (usually 10 years plus), it would depend where you were, who you asked and who did the work. My mate, for instance, has a 2013 Prius C. Last year it needed a battery because it’s a high-kilometre car from lots of highway commuting. He got quoted $6000 just for a battery, no labour, at Toyota. He got it done at a place in Sydney with a warranty-covered reconditioned battery for $2350 installed.

Hyundai or any other car maker would gain a lot of popularity if they provided a means to turn off all the useless "safety" tech. The reason they didn't give ncap cars to crash is they're probably fed up with those clowns coming up with more and more nonsense which has zero to do with safety in order to get a 5 star rating.
