As a korean myself, I approve this video. Many foreign people may think kpop fandom went crazy after recent international popularity, but it has been always this creepy from the beginning. Although this video exposed pretty much portion of this abomination, I'd like to add some trivial facts. Did you know there were "fans" shouting their ship in front of their idol, and handing over gory fanfiction of them? Rumors say that fanfiction contained moments that are quite teeth-shaking(if you know what I mean). Did you know that some of those "fans" barged into marriage ceremony of idol member's brother, ruining it? Did you know some guy hid spycam in his eyeglasses and went to fanmeeting? Poor girl did her best job(she told he would be much more handsome if he takes his glasses off)but some of those "fans"(mostly guy fans i might add) actually scolded her behavior, accusing her being "too expensive". Did you also know there are "사생택시(Sasaeng taxi)"? They are basically a taxi that stalks after kpop idol's car. Yes. Apparently there were so many fucking Sasaeng payed money for taxi driver to tail idol's car, IT BECAME ACTUAL THING. I have never been in Kpop fandom(I'm a fucking weeb lol) and even non-fans like myself are aware of those monstrosity. Hopefully, there are many people that is aware of their misdeeds and actually trying something to improve fandom. Most of sane fans try to stop buying or spreading information from Sasaeng. Management companies started to take action against those stalkers and anti-fans(though from what i heard from fans, they barely does anything for Its stars). RPS shippers in Korea started to censor their ship name to avoid their members from seeing it. Yeah, they are still shipping real person, it is creepy, but at least they became aware of it. It is little things, but some of fans started to work on it. Sad thing is, most of newely-founded fandom is built on this monstrosity labeled as fandom culture. Some of management companies actually make some of members to make bromantic or semi-homoerotic atmosphere between them-because you know, that will flip the shit out of fujoshis. Rumors said stars read shipping fanfictions prior to their debut, mainly to strengthen their mental capacity and to get used to so-called culture. It is sad that this kind of culture is set. But what's more sad is, getting used to it. Korean culture may look beautiful outside, but in inside, it uses people like gear of device. Always working hard, insufficiently rewarded, and replaced immediately when you are wasted. I think Kpop culture really shows it. In pretty but sad way. Sorry for my janky English(I'm not native speaker, so yeah) and if you want to hear more of kpop fandom in my perspective, reply to this comment. I might be able to answer some of your curiosity! Edit:Holy shit, 1k likes, Thanks everybody! If you are new in kpop, do not make those extreme "fans" turn your nose away from kpop. If you are kpop fans, please support artist as people and help keep fandom safe from those "fans". For RPGmonger, keep exposing those dark sides of fandom. To eliminate molds, we must expose them in sunlight! With love, from Korea.

That’s fucking horrific. These Idols should get firearms training and the appropriate weapons to defend themselves. Can’t understand why these so-called “fans” and “anti-fans” act so repulsively.

오정민 that was an extremely informative read and your English is actually very fluent. It's disheartening that fandoms can become this toxic but thankfully there are always people that actually enjoy the fandom and are respectful. Some of the stuff that you mentioned are quite surprising/shocking and I didn't know about them so thank you for taking your time in writing that.

Caden Stevens I also wish they could defend themselves. In korea, firearm is strictly regulated, to the point where only soldiers own them.(come to think of it, it is a good thing, because if not, one of those Sasaengs would be shooting their faves or something.....) Moreover, people really does not side Idols when they defend themselves. Once, one of earlier Idol became fed up of Sasaeng' bullshit, hit Sasaeng. Most of old people's response? "How can you beat up this helpless girl?" I mean, yeah, we should not beat people up here and there, but seriously, If somebody stalks me, I would be berserk and go full on murder of something. Whether on guy or girls, Korean does not think stalking as a big deal, and most of celebrities endure to keep their popularity.

I already commented this elsewhere but let me add this here as well: For me and many others, shipping real people is more about creating your own characters and scenarios based on the idea of those people. The idols are the artists’ inspiration in a way. Its never real. Those real life ships are more about friendship. I cant even imagine doing it differently, but unfortunately i know thats not the case for everyone.

Kakyoin is disappointed they objectify them. As a very widespread example women used to be objectified as child makers and house keepers. Some people who are freaking mental objectify idols and people they admire and make them an object, a play thing, the worst part is the fact that they feel so entitled about it and lack a total lack of empathy for people they “supposedly” admire.

My younger sister (she's 14) has recently become a massive K-Pop fan. I've never been big on it, but one of my best friends loves all things K-pop, so I sat my sister down to talk to my friend (and her sister) about it all. THE LITERAL FIRST THING they said was "Respect them, they're people too". They gave her all of the horror stories (some of which were mentioned in the video), then told her about proper behavior when interacting with other fans of other bands (like BTS and EXO fans, and in case she meets somebody who dislikes her fandoms) and of course, how to act if she ever actually meets a member of a band (we live in Australia, so she probably won't ever, but this stuff is good for her to know, I guess). I think the thing that really gets me is the level of obsession some of the fans have, they don't allow their idols any privacy, treating them as if they're a public entity that the fans own. There's a difference between dedicated and obsessed. Hopefully, my sister is dedicated.

Okay so my worst experience I had with this fandom was when I had to change school. On my first school I had a good friend who was pretty bummed about that I had to change. After a year of changing I got a phone and also the number of my old friend which I didn´t see much. We started talking and then she goes: "Do you like K-pop?" I didn´t know what it was so she started to tell me something about it. I wasn´t bad with that, as long as she didn´t exaggerate. Everything was going fine until she started to spam me with literature porn of her favourite couple (Mostly written by herself). When I said she should stop with that she just kept going until I blocked her. She then contacted me on Wattpad, begging me to unblock me. I did that and it was normal for a short amount of time. Than she started spamming me with pornographic fanart until I blocked her again. We then met in reallife again and she proceeded to call me a homophobe. Yeah okay then.

@@EspeonMistress00 first of all, I'll say that it's been 2 years since I wrote that comment and my opinions have somewhat changed. I think the point I was trying to make was that, because of the facts that idols are marketed like a product, and that delulus don't tend to think these things through, it's possible that the number of assaults (by fans) to female and male idols is closer to being even than it is in the general population. Statistically though, it just makes sense that it would still happen more often to females. Also, yes most male idols are packed, but that doesn't mean that they can hit their fans. Most people would avoid ruining their career like that, especially when they've been trained and they're run by an agency. Idk, maybe it makes a difference and some people are scared off, but I think most fans would never even consider the possibility of their idol hitting them

I suppose I understand why it is annoying but it's a way we kpop fans have a quick and fun interaction with each other. We just get very happy and excited when we know they like the same group as us. It's just how most of us are. We acknowledge each other and basically like to act like a family. But we have those rotten pieces of shits that we really, *REALLY* don't want to have around us. And they aren't part of our family.

Complete Trash well if you want people who are the opposite of gay, go listen to heavy german metal band Powerwolf. They are the number 2 main pick for crusaders and knights, just behind Sabaton though they only have one or two truly dedicated to Christendom knighthood, Powerwolf has a more expanded if dark selection. Also that comment i made, i was trying to insinuate that, oh forget it.

i always thought shipping real people was idiotic, senseless, and disgusting. Like these are real people with their own feelings, thoughts, lives, sexualities, and relationships. This doesn't just go for kpop, this includes western fandoms too. Some fans treat kpop idols the same as the industry: like dolls or objects...completely dehumanized. You wouldn't do this to a person on the streets, why are celebrities any different?? Say what you will about cringey hetalia or anime fans...but the way some people treat celebrities, whether you like them or not, is abhorrent. From kpop idols to the likes of Kim Kardashian....these people are human beings!

Agreed. Shipping real people with each other and making them gay for their own personal satisfaction is suoer weird. Another example I can think of is Shawn Mendes. Some people were like 100% convinced he was gay, even when he said he wasn't, and wouldn't shut the fuck up about it. It's so weird and creepy that people are so forceful about their own sexual preference that they feel the need to force it onto other people.

This isn't exclusive to K Pop stars either. Back in 2012-ish, in One Direction's heyday, "Larry Styleson" (that is, Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson) was a big thing in the fandom. Most observers (including me) thought it was just harmless fun and turned a blind eye, but it turns out that all the attention surrounding every little word and gesture the two made to each other really hurt their friendship. I just think that's so sad.

I feel you. Especially with like the Dan and Phil fandoms and similar fandoms along with kpop. These are real people we are talking about and even level headed fans I know take shipping to far in my opinion. The justification I've seen when you bring this type of stuff up is "well chances are they'll never see this stuff" and while that might be true for you random fanfiction about them that doesnt mean the idea of the ship isnt a huge deal and they are definitely aware of it and like he said in the video it can really hurt these people's relationships with each other when people ship them romantically.... if you even do one deep dive on tumblr (don't recommend btw) you'll find entire pornand smut fictiom blogs dedicated to ships and pretending the people in the video. picture or writing is their ship.... people even decidate blogs and such to porn lookalikes which is just gross.... That's all also not to mention all the gross personal fantasizing I've seen were people literally treat idols like pieces of meat for their own pleasure.... if you look at any smut blog that takes asks you'll see tons of people talking about what they would do with a member or what they want said member to do to them or analyzing what their sexual fetishes are and its just... ugh. It's one thing to do this type of stuff with fictional characters but again these are real people....

Last summer I met a girl through another friend and we instantly clicked and started dating. But not long into the relationship I found out she was an obsessive K Pop fan. At first I didn’t mind I just thought she had an interest in Korea and she liked bands and it wasn’t a big deal. But She would constantly tell me how she wished I was Korean so I could be as beautiful as the boys from BTS. She would force me to do sexual role play as Bts members and if I refused she would straight up get abusive saying hurtful things including calling me “useless white thrash” (she is white aswell so I honestly don’t know what she was on about). She wouldn’t even allow me to listen to any music that wasn’t BTS or Goth7. Now one day I told her that I liked the group Blackpink (I’d only listened to one or two songs and I knew very little about the band) and I was expecting her to be happy I liked a k pop group. But instead she started crying and saying “You think those stupid skinny bitches are better than me” and then I kinda got pissed and said “Well you are always comparing me to kpop boys and saying how you’d rather them over me and that fucking hurts like you’re being a bitch” and she hit me and continued to full on wrestle me and continuously hit me and when I tried to shove her off she started screaming. And honestly She doesn’t look it but she was really strong. And I didn’t talk to her for a weak after it happened and she apologized and I allowed her back into my life and honestly I don’t know why. At that time I was so depressed and just needed somebody in my life so I accepted her. So she had stopped asking for the strange sexual role play (I don’t kinkshame but it’s not my thing) and it turned out she was sexually role playing with other people as bts members. Like she was texting her friends and using Snapchat stickers to emulate the band members. Anyway she full on cheated on me and it broke my heart but I ended the relationship and I fell into an even worse depression. There was other things that happened like her trying to force me to wear Korean fashion and even to learn Korean with her and I was so shocked how this obsession had taken over her life. And I had some genuinely great moments with her and I dunno it was just pretty sad. I even lost the friendship I had with the girl who introduced her to me to k pop aswell.

I thought idols are supposed to be liked for their music, hard work and personality. I personally hate it when idols got criticized when there's only a rumor of them dating. Like during the time when Baekhyun posted a picture of the same shoes as another female idol, he was so heavily criticized that he had to take down the photo. Thankfully the K-pop fans around me aren't like this. They may sometimes fangirl over an idol, but that's just about it.

Advice for people worried about diving into the kpop fandom: 1. I hate to say, but I'm going to rip off the bandaid. At first, avoid groups that are new, because everybody's excited and wanting to promote them everywhere and they quickly get annoying. 2. Look into older groups, like SHINee, Sistar, TVXQ, KARA, etc 3. Go a little off the beaten track. For instance, VIXX, Block B, and EXID both have really chilled out fandoms because they are past the worries of "they aren't popular we need to promote them so they don't disband" but not to the level of popularity where you have to deal with too many crazy fans or dedicated anti-fans. And often these less-famous groups are the ones where you can find your true favorites, because they usually have more distinct concepts. (VIXX does fantasy horror concepts like none else.) 4. Stan talent stan Shinhwa. (No, but really, check out Shinhwa. They've been in the game for 20 years and are a shining example of how a kpop group can stick together and keep producing great content year after year. The kpop group I respect the most, even if they're WAY too old for me to be able to fangirl over them.) 5. You don't have to spend much money on them. Merch and physical albums help them a lot, but you're still supporting them by doing smaller things like buying the albums digitally or even Smashing That Like Button for the content they put out. 6. Remember that as much as they love their fans, being an idol is a job, and as much as kpop shouldn't define you, being an idol doesn't define them. 7. Enjoy yourself. And if you stop enjoying it? You don't have to force yourself to be a fan.

2:35 Someone in my 9th Grade Class (let’s call her Shipper) shipped 3 other people (2 straight dudes, 1 Bi girl) in my class. Shipper went as far as to write a fanfiction about both of those guys fighting over the girl! I read the first sentence “[Insert Girl’s name here] was unbuttoning [Guy 1’s] shirt.” It was weird. And she only shipped them because I had made a joke about them loving each other. I’m kinda scared to read the rest of the Fan-Fic. EDIT: BREAKING NEWS. I read the Fanfic. It involves [Girl 1] raping [Guy 1] while [Guy 2] watches. After I read it, [Girl 1] revealed to me that she liked [Guy 2]. I hope this doesn’t affect their relationship.

Listening to this, I can't stop thinking about the crap the idols/seiyuus of Love Live have to go through, especially because many fans can't realize the difference between the fictional character and the real breathing person voicing them. Recently, Mimorin (Umi's voice actress) got a boyfriend (I don't remember the name, but he's a wrestler) and both of them received thousands of hate mails and death threats, just because she was "ignoring" them or didn't form a relationship with another of the seiyuus of Muse. And it isn't much better for the members of Aqours, as in their recent fan meeting and concert in Shanghai, not only the girls were interrupted on stage during their performance, they also received disgusting gifts, such as hentai doujinshi featuring the character they voice, pics of them photoshopped into prostitutes and porn actresses, and even bags of semen! While the K-Pop fandom is full of insane people, Japanese idols don't have it better.

The razor blades happened to Kan Miyeon, from Baby V.O.X, one of my all time favourite groups but also one of the most hated female groups, for no reason I can see (because I'm sane). Someone started a rumor that Miyeon was dating Heejun from H.O.T in 1999, so the rabid fans started threatening Miyeon's life, sending her razor blades and letters written in blood with content such as "I'm gonna kill myself, I think you should too, let's go to hell together". As for Eunhye, also from BBV, she often got hit instead of Miyeon. The girls joke about it a lot, saying it was always the other four who received rocks or attacks that were aimed at Miyeon. She felt very guilty of all that. I also love H.O.T but I'm always disappointed that they never stepped up to say that they do not condone attacking other idols because of a rumor. Hopefully that has changed? BBV was also hated for being too "sexy" for the times, which if you look at it now is soooo laughable. Compared to today's singers, they look like pure little angels.

The Sonic and Undertale fandoms are looking pretty fucking mundane right now Well, they are mundane. Their cringiness doesn't affect people in the outside world because of how contained they are. People may not think about it that way since the feeling of intense cringe can be very powerful but the sort of cringe the fandoms I mentioned is, in the long run, harmless. I've never seen a fandom like this. Based on what you're saying, the K-pop fandom is pretty disgusting at the very least. Actual people are being harmed. This isn't cringe. This is dehumanizing. I'm glad our popular music artists don't have to deal with these kinds of people. We think trolls can be bad but these anti-fans are so much worse. I almost can't believe it but this shit is true and that people that live do this to popular entertainers.

shipping real life people is the worst shit ever... I've been a fan of 5 seconds of summer since about 2012 and on one of their concerts that i went to, two of the members told the crowd that they are just spending time together because they have to write songs at this point, since, no matter what they do together, people will instantly ship them and they hate it. Also, the drummer told the crowd to stop assuming that they are "their boys" and shit because the fans dont even know them. They might know their twitter profiles, but not them. They received so much hate for it but damn they told their fans the truth.

I once had a friend who was a hardcore K-Pop fan.... One day I noticed her trying to draw a picture of the idol Jimin (I think he's from BTS) and as she failed miserably, I volunteered to draw it for her (as the great friend that I am). The next day I came up to her all excited about my drawing and as I handed it to her that crazy bitch tore it in half yelling I DON'T LOVE JIMIN ANYMORE, HE GOT A GIRLFRIEND! I'M NEVER GONNA LISTEN TO HIS MUSIC AGAIN! Here I must note two things: 1st, It was a very realistic portrait of the guy done in pencil and it literally took me hours to complete...(I didn't even take a picture of it cause i wanted her to see it first and maybe help me correct any mistakes idk) and 2nd all this was in 9th grade so I can't defend her for being "too young" to understand the importance of a drawing to its artist... Anyway, the next day she declared that she was wrong and Jimin hadn't gotten a girlfriend and that she would carry on loving BTS. She never even apologized...

Most of my friends are Kpop fans (I'm not) and they talk about the groups they like quite a bit. I've listened to some of the music and it's okay, not really my thing, I can see how others might like it though. But it seems like a lot of people are only in this fandom for the group members, not the music. Also, having male friends and being female gets you shipped with your friends a lot. It's pretty annoying. I went over to one of my guy friends' house to hang out for a little while and the next day in school people accused us of being in a relationship or something. There are some things I think would be worth mentioning in the next video. Black Oceans: When a group of fans from one group hate another so much, they organize an event to sabotage their performance by getting (basically) everyone to turn off their light sticks for a particular group, making the audience completely dark which is called a black ocean. The opposite of this would be a silver ocean where everyone's light stick is on. A black ocean is a huge sign of disrespect that basically shows idols that they are not wanted there. It's a really sad thing. Solo stans: People that "stan" a group, but actively hate on one or more members, only really being a fan of a few of the members. There are lots of stories of solo stans going out of their way to be horrible to the members they don't like Voting season: Literally the worst fucking few months or weeks EVER, especially if you like multiple groups. In general, people that like more than one group are already hated upon because other fans call them "disloyal" to the groups they like. mutifandoms tend to not like fanwars and are constantly trying to defuse the situation but get hated for that too. Fans themselves have been harassed because of this, mentally and physically, but voting season just takes the cake. If more than one idol group you follow is up for the same award and you decide to pick group A instead of group B, well fuck you I guess you're not a fan of group B. Because lots of voting goes through online, people are constantly cheating or finding other ways of sabotaging the other groups. It's literally the ugliest thing and is the absolute WORST time to be a kpop fan because there's no escaping it. As a fan of BTS and Exo (I know fucking crazy) fanwars are so goddamn stupid and most people that participate in them are delusional. They straight up don't even KNOW that they're acting like an anti. Antis aren't fans and if you fight with someone from another group, have fun being an anti. have a great fucking life, you won't be missed

annieinspace oh god voting season is fucking hell!! First of all its sad but kpop is seen more like a sports team even if you dont look at them that way, everything is almost set up that way. I'm also a ARMY & an EXOL but I lean towards BTS wanted to win a dasaeng & I voted hard for exo for a while so like why not right? I was already under the stress of setting hundreds of ID's like "one usually makes" especially in the kpop fandom, streaming their MV's day & night on multiple devices & when I posted on twitter that I was going to vote for BTS this time a lot of EXOLs were throwing me out & hating on me even took my account down. I got mad but still kept voting & made a new account on twitter omg you guys, I wish I never saw those hashtags, & even my Instagram feed. Everyone was fighting over who. Its every year especially when Mnet fucked up & even upset countries like China.(the flag incident) & I rememver the thread from a Karmy stated that when BTS won their first dasaeng they weren't crying fir happiness but for sadness because alot of other fandoms were upset that they started cursing at them making them frightened. Voting season is where antis & devoted fans see who's "two faced" or "unloyal"& wait for revenge if their group doesn't win. Overall it leaves a bitter taste. I remember when one of the SNSD members cried because antis made a black ocean for them I remember when sasaeng fans pushed EXO chanyeol (my bias) off an escalator & when he fell to the bottom they just runned to him & proceeded touching him in inappropriate places. Idk if this was true but Jackson of Got7 even bowed down crying & pleading to chinese fans to let him pass when he was surrounded by them Dont get me even started with TVXQ sasaengs. Why can't it be ARMY & EXOL like it used to be back then.. I just wished we bonded back together like it was. Even EXO & BTS are friends

annieinspace if you think that’s bad,in Singapore from December 2017 there was this new “K-pop” group made by some 14-16 year old girls called beaunite and AFTER 2 days passed, the group broke up because all the k-pop fan girls bashed the group so much that they were too embarrassed to even make their own first album sure, the girls were stupid to do so because they didn’t even have proper training to be a k-pop group if after sometime,I’m pretty sure the group might have done well and they also made a video of their introduction which is still on KZbin about their group members but it is film at a pretty bad quality which could be one of the factors why the fangirls bashed them badly

solo stans are not people who put down other members. they simply stan 1 member of a group. then, within this minority in the fandom, there are people who put down other members to bring theirs up. half the time solo stans are the ones making the biggest donations to groups in the name of their bias.

of course exo ls will be sensitive during that time. last year exo was disrespected to the point where they cried backstage and had their award stolen from them, and their fans *beaten* and manhandled by guards. mentioning a rival group is the last thing you need to do. armys can, and would do the same if someone mentioned exo, seeing that half that fandom hates the group by default. armys and exo-ls can never mix. exo and bts are not friends either. they respect each other but they are not friends. the only ones who are friends is kai and jimin.

I discovered K-pop about a month after my mother killed herself. I didn't have internet at the time and lived pretty isolated- so when my friend let me stay the night and had me watch K-pop videos on her computer, I was pretty damn excited. Ring Ding Dong by SHINee had just come out, and it was the second video she showed me. I fell in love with the voice of the blonde guy, it reminded me of my mom's. After my friend grilled me on K-pop trivia over the next few months, I learned his name was Kim Jonghyun. I would have my dad drive me 50 miles once a week so I could download videos, and I listened to SHINee 24/7 for the next two years. Not having personal internet, I never got into the fandoms, and by the time I'd moved to where I could get internet, I lost interest in K-pop in general. But I'd still listen to SHINee whenever I got depressed, missed my mom, or couldn't sleep. For years Jonghyun was my crutch. I would wish he was my older brother, because my real brother was abusive and cruel. I'd heard stories of how bad the kpop world was. I thought it was an exaggeration. How could it possibly be THAT bad? Those crazy happenings surely had to be rare. Apparently not. I can't tell you how crushed I've been. What happened to Jonghyun. I refuse to support an industry that allows for this abuse. That works their employees to the point they have to ask "Tell me I did good." I will not spend a penny on K-pop merchandise, play mobile games with K-pop in them, watch K-pop videos on KZbin without add block or from the home channels of the companies. Not until changes are made to the core of the industry.

He suffered from a mental illness. I'm sure the industry isn't 100% clean but I wouldn't put all the blame on it. He was also sick of people judging him if you heard Waffle, you would know. I guess you could say he had high hopes of himself but kept feeling worthless over and over again until he took his own life.

The moment you said that Jonghyun was the one who caught your attention, my heart literally hurts for you. Especially since Jonghyun died the same way your mother did AND he was the one who you clung onto afterwards. I feel so sad for you.

Another reason why mental illness needs to be taken seriously The reason cause in Asian culture, talking about mental illness is taboo and would rather not think about. You'd think after all the suicides, they'd have taken it seriously.

Liz Borchardt I took a couple classes about addiction in college, and one of them talked about factors to consider for certain groups during rehab. For instance, it said a lot of Asian people don't want to talk about their problems (because they think it's a sign of weakness) or their achievements (because they think they'll be considered arrogant), and a lot of Hispanic men don't want to discuss their problems/struggles because of the culture of machismo. When it comes to topics like addiction and mental illness, people of all walks of life need to be taught that it's okay to share their feelings and issues. Say what you will about Metta World Peace, but he has raised awareness of mental illness. Glenn Close also has a foundation to educate people about mental illness to try to dispel the stigma surrounding it.

It's even now disgusting when you realise that these people are just young kids (you have to go into the Kpop industry pretty early on, the usual age is high school) being harassed by full grown adults and even other kids their age.
