I think we all know that infamous story where a girl attempted suicide because she was being harassed for drawing a character from Steven Universe wrong. Also, I have to constantly block porn bots every week, which is becoming an annoyance.

I had one for years and seriously, you will only find toxic people if you follow the drama. I don't like drama, I only like to talk about stuff I like, and post my art. So I never was confronted to toxic people, even in fandoms. I was a fan of Hetalia, but because I wasn't really active in the fandom and because I only followed artists, I never was confronted to the bad sides of the fandom. Serioulsy, you can find everything on Tumblr. You're only seeing what you want to see. If you follow drama, you will see drama.

Well, I think most of us shared some of those stories because they were hilariously fake and didn't really hurt anyone (I don't think it would be that bad to share a supposedly true anecdote of a teenager going to cry outside in the middle of the night because of the Homestuck update, the police showing up because they were suspicious suspicious, but then one of the cops getting surprised because there was an update on his favorite webcomic and reading it in his cellphone while and then ranting about it with the teen till morning). It's such an innocent lie and also funny. It gets bad where they get to spread information that can hurt people.

And then there's the amount of time and effort spent blow-drying the hair. Never have I seen a more judgmental and vile community than the likes of tumblr. There are times when I agree with and understand the social justice focused arguments (or just stuff like why using the word "triggered" in the context of being offended is wrong. But the sheer unrestrained malice that these tumblr communities hold toward anyone they disagree with is awe inspiring. If you don't condone harassing, threatening or outright trying to murder someone who so much as drew fan art that they find problematic, you get labeled a sympathizer or apologist or whatever. They don't understand that it's possible to criticize or call someone out on that stuff, without condoning assaulting and terrorizing them. Don't even get started on their inability to separate fiction from reality. The amount of times I've heard the Steven Universe fandom accuse someone of being homophobic or ableist just because of a critique of a fictional character that had nothing to do with that. But nope, because they feel they get representation from that character, that representative trait is their one defining trait and they will defend that character to the death like it's their literal child. They have a horribly black and white view of things and will dredge up anything you did ten years ago from their little receipt blogs to use as ammunition for why you're a terrible person. It doesn't matter if you've become a better person. Either you're just doing it for brownie points, or it shouldn't have happened at all. No one can learn or become more open minded. I think tumblr angers me way more than 4chan the likes of 4chan because that place is just a bunch of people dicking around and not taking anything seriously. Tumblr on the other hand takes things way too seriously and those people go out of their way to prove how hostile they are, all under the name of "justice".

Oh boy sit down it’s time for tumblr horror story time: a friends gf cheated on him and they broke up over it. They are both cosplayers and we’re going to be attending the same con. Well a week before the con a friend of the ex got on tumblr with some edited screen shots and accused him of being a pedophile, a rapist, all sorts of slander to try and start a witch hunt. The post went viral and he had people stalking him during the con posting pictures of all his actions. She also posted all his social media accounts (even the MMOs that he played and what servers he played on) he had to delete his Facebook to get away from the harassment. She even posted where he worked and told people to “get him” there. He had to quit his job due to threats against his safety, and is perma-banned from a local con as a direct result of this slanderous post.

You want to hear a real horror story? I followed thirty blogs(keep that number in mind) that were rpg idea blogs. It was a tight knit community and wholesome. I didn't use Tumblr for two days. I come back to check on my favorite blogs and guess what? A fuc*ing civil war broke out because one of the blogs on their discord(who is a lesbian don't keep this in mind it just makes the next point more rediculous) said that she liked to get fuc*ed by her dog. Half of the blogs lambasted her for this calling her an abuser of animals. The other half you ask? They sided with her. Needless to say in less than 5 minutes I unfollowed and blocked all thirty of those blogs. Even the ones who didn't voice their opinions publicly but were still keeping the drama alive. I hate that this kind of crap happens constantly. You think you've found the perfect community with no gripes or toxicity? Just give it a couple of months.

There are two types of people on tumblr, those who know its a hellsite and those who contribute to the problem. You didn't even mention the barrage of death threats and admonitions to people who "did wrong" to kill themselves, regardless of whether or not they were actually wrong. There's also an awful competition for "woke points" and being "the most tolerant". I can describe bad things about tumblr all day, but it's also the place I met some of my best friends and regularly have good interactions too.

As someone that uses Tumblr almost every day I can tell you that it can be really dumb sometimes. From the glitches and all the annoying sjw's, the heterosxual hate, and the hypocritical fan girls who complain about shonen manga sexualizing girls while they go and indulge themselves in yaoi fanfics/fanart... A mutual of mine reblogged a post about lgbt-minors and safe-spaces and the rule was for 18+ year olds to not interact. It was pretty obvious that they were indirectly implying that people over 18 were potential pedophiles. I asked them what was so wrong with adults coming to talk about them on friendly terms and this non-binary trans dude said "BECAUSE CHILDREN ARE ALLOWED TO SAY THEY FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE WITH ADULTS???" and I said "Of course that's understandable but there's really nothing wrong with an adult coming to talk you on friendly terms". I honestly tried to be civil with them but the trans/non-binary dude (who's 18) started talking about how creepy it was for adults to talk to kids online and then he called me a spoon. I sent him a message instead so I wouldn't spam the OP's post. I tried to be civil with the dude but he started calling me a disgusting creep, and I think he was under the impression that I was a 30 year old man looking for some fuck or something, I guess I sounded a bit too mature for a 17 year old XD

6:30 I used to run an art blog on tumblr and long story short my ex got really mad when we broke up and made a nasty post "Calling me out" for things i never did or incredibly, grossly exaggerated things. Of course nobody came to talk to me our my friends to clear the situation and her being a mildly popular artist on the site at the time had sent her hundreds of white knights to send me hate messages. I tried talking to her but she blocked me and proceeded to create more posts about me telling her followers i was stalking her and trying to further "abuse" her. I deleted my tumblr later on but the entire situation still drives me insane on how easy it is to get gullible angry teens sent in hordes to attack someone. As stupid as the whole situation was I'm glad it happened, I deleted multiple social networks and got my ass together afterwards because i had less distractions. It also taught me never to date the stereotypical tumblr type (multiple gendered, otherkin and self diagnosed with 100 illnesses type). That site was both a blessing and a curse.

Yeah... tumblr does kinda suck, mainly because of the people on it. I'll admit, I'm on it, but I just stick to roleplaying. I'll admit, at times, there are decent posts about social injustices and the like, but for the most part, it's just unabashed bigotry against people for being white, cis, male, and/or heterosexual. And it all just makes me sick that these people are so casual, even wanting said people killed, that they don't see how bigoted they are, despite bashing those people "for being bigoted". Once, I got called racist and self-loathing because I said I wasn't interested in the Black Panther movie. Shortly thereafter, two people came and said I was a racist white person (I'm black) and when I said I was neither, they said I was lying (both about being racist and my race) or that I had self-loathing. All of which was untrue, as my disinterest in the movie had nothing to do with race. On the upside, I managed to make a friend on the site, who was in the same boat as me, sick of tumblr's bigotry. I also once knew someone who claimed that a heterosexual relationship was automatically toxic, no ifs, ands, or buts.

Laffy Taffy I don’t go to tumblr regularly but I do occasionally visit. There’s cool and wholesome fan art and comics, but it’s also plagued with the “gay shipping” trend. I still go there because tumblr is filled with active fans and posts. Again, I try to avoid most of the smut and SJW stuff. It is a shame that I’m constantly recommended gay shipping posts and communities just because I browse art that has nothing to do with that stuff. And I wish the communities would be more involved with each other, like actually discussing theories and reasonable opinions instead of just fangirling and dumping whatever garbage they think.

I've been on Tumblr for about 6 years, and... honestly, as much as I actually like being on this site, I'm glad I'm a lurker. I stay in the stratosphere of most fandoms and only interact via comments on AO3 and/or the occasional reblog with actual responses, but other than that, I'm as nondescript of a multifandom blog as it gets. :P Fandom on Tumblr is... an interesting experience. Sometimes it's mostly peaceful (Shoutout to Tsuritama and the Kingsman fandom for being mostly drama-free) and everything is amazing. A single tag can become its own little community (not unlike subreddits, but smaller) where people make up events, post amazing art, do some really incredible fanfiction, and just generally are really nice to eachother and have amazing conversations and/or make a shit-ton of dumb memes in celebration of something we love. The Sherlock fandom wasn't always a terrible, shambling, bile-spewing husk of itself - in fact, the S2-S3 hiatus gave rise to some amazing fan theories, tons of meta written by people much more versed in math, physics and medicine than most, and a wonderfully angsty creative output that resulted in one of my favorite BBC Sherlock fics getting published as its own series. And being in the MCU fanbase immediately after Avengers? Wow, we made so many booty jokes, Tony Stark's beard had a Twitter, and I still listen to some of the fanmade songs the Loki fandom put out back then. But on the flip side, sometimes it's... wow. I warn you all, do not enter any fandom with diverse casts or major fem-slash/slash ships. Do not even attempt it. Stay in the lurk, the lurk is your friend. It will keep you safe when the ad hominem attacks starts a'flying, and they will. It's like those comments about how if you didn't ship NaruSasu you were 'homophobic' that we used to see back in the 00s from our stupid tween peers, except it's now a 5 paragraph long Tumblr rant on how depicting Character X as Y in fanfiction is inherently racist/sexist/phobic, and you should feel terrible for not spending hours on researching cultural quirks or how to write porn without trope Z in them for a 7K oneshot fanfic. I'm looking at the 'The Force Awakens' fandom in particular here. Holy actual shit, give an inch and these ladies want ten miles, right now. I love Stormpilot as much as the next gal, but Christ almighty, leave the fucking Kylux fans alone. They're shipping Foe Yay, for crying out loud, not 'the only white slash couple because they're racists!!!!' and no, stop harrassing Kathleen Kennedy because Stormpilot won't be confirmed in TLJ. I don't need to be a Force user to see that, most likely, no ship is going to be 100% canonized in TLJ. The romance isn't the focus, the bloody plot is. And speaking of that... the entire TJLC part of the Sherlock fandom. I had more fun tracking the complete meltdown that was them leading up to, during, and after S4, than I did watching S4 itself. The season may have been bad, but the reactions to it was a beautiful sight to behold. Like a giant ball of blue fire igniting from a toxic swamp and sustaining itself until a month after the finale, where it finally dawned on them that, no, Mofftiss were not in fact hiding a secret final episode with a Johnlock kiss in it. I would feel bad for them, but the schadenfreude was too strong and still is. Get rekt, man. ;w; *TLDR;* being an observer on Tumblr is a fun, if at times frustrating experience. Some fandoms are amazing and full of support and good fanmade content, and others are fun to watch collapse in on themselves when canon decides to Joss the hell out of them. Some are just plain warzones, and should be drifted through and not engaged with at all costs.

tumblr almost ruined my life. I rp on world of warcraft and had a bad ooc fight with my rp partner. The rp then got retconed. However, that person went to tumblr and decided to make a post about how I was an abusive, manipulating, dangerous person. To stay away from me and warn everyone about how horrible I am. I was then messaged on WoW by random people that started to judge be based on a one sided argument, calling me names, telling me to go die or quit the game, and even shouting out loud in public about how much of a garbage person I am. And yes... this tumblr post has been reblogged a few times, so even if they delete the original, the info is still out there and ALL my characters names are out for the public to see. I use tumblr for viewing art and fan works, headcanons and theories, memes, aesthetics and overall random stuff, cause it's easy to find that stuff and save it for when you want to view it for later there, and even tho avoiding drama completely is impossible, I've learnt to use it pretty calmly by just not getting into any of that crap and scrolling past it. So yeah. Stay low and drama-free (especially when it comes to mentioning specific people and events, just don't do that, stay vague if you're just trying to vent. I've also learned to just rant in tags of reblogs cause people can't as easily reply to you then (unless they go through the trouble of coming across and screenshotting your tags for whatever reason) if you want to add your thoughts) and then the site could actually be enjoyable then.

I have a tumblr, and basically everything you said was SPOT-ON. I got a tumblr just to post random art that I made (since DeviantArt has been known to sell user's art to third parties) but it quickly evolved to be a mesh of everything that I enjoyed. I just reblogged whatever I liked, and I still do that. However, the witch hunting is REALLY bad there. Somebody made a post attacking my friend who called her self "[insert lesbian ship here] trash", and calling her homophobic even though SHE WAS LESBIAN HERSELF. She got extreme amounts of hate for that, and it took a while for it to cool down. And that's not even the worst of it. I've seen little kids (12-13) get death threats from somebody in a hatedom (which are common on tumblr) just because she was part of a "cringy" fandom. I've made a lot of friends through the platform, and some of the people on there were some of the first people who made me feel like being gay wasn't a bad thing for me to be. Some people can be downright toxic there (one reason I'm not nearly as active in the Steven Universe fandom anymore, although the show is beautiful. The hatedom and the petty ship wars just made me depressed), but there are also some pretty nice communities. Although it's had it's petty fights on occasion, the broadway musicals fandom (where I spend most of my time) is a pretty nice community with talented artists and supportive people (Hamilton, however, had some wierd problems with it's fandom so I'm not including that one haha). Basically, what I'm trying to say is that this video is completely right, but there are a LOT of genuinely kind and talented people on there as long as you avoid the wrong communities.

About the topic: I use Tumblr to follow blogs that make interesting things of the fandoms I'm interested in. And I'm quite happy with what I follow. That reminds me, when I first started tumblr there was a post going around with pictures of a transman who had committed suicide due to bullying. I didn't reblog it, as the post was a little off. AND lo and behold, a couple hours later I see the same post with "dead transman" replying to it. The dude in the photos was not dead nor trans. OP scrub their blog and left an apology. Personally, i like the fact that even if the original poster deletes their post. A copy of that post will still exist. Since I have seen a fair number of people go on deleting sprees when they move fandoms or delete blog/sideblogs. Tumblr is a pain to use without xkit. I don't really have a ton of bad experiences there, but I seen a lot of the idiots that start shit. It usually very dumb that I sit back and eat popcorn.

I used to use tumblr a lot in jr. High School. When there are political elections, everyone thinks they're a politician and even if you don't follow those kinds of blogs, your feed would be flooded with them. I don't use it anymore.

Here look, I have tumblr sussed for you: Post art, Post photos, Post memes, post stories and poems, Hell, post video game achievements or screenshots, do you. Do no engage, do not interact, do not share opinions. Congratulations, you have a healthy tumblr experience. Despite it being a 'blog' site, the level in which people can engage and become a mob of radicals is counter intuitive to the individualist idea of it being anything but a 'personal blog'. Unless of course you know where the tools to disable such things live, and use them appropriately, but the site does not thrive on healthy behaviour. So pointing them out to the melodramatic teenagers and child minded adults wouldn't be too good of an idea. 99% of tumblr has not sussed this weird algorithm that allows you to enjoy the experience to the mystery of us observing. The human experiment continues.

i know tumblr is my favorite social media site just because i've met so many people on there and that's how we communicate. i always tell people, i'm just there for the anime and memes. i hate the hivemind some users are apart of, and i keep discourse away from me. i'm just reblogging dumb screenshots from anime and memes and supporting my friends' art and stories. it really isn't all as bad as people make it out to be. if you follow the right people and just have a small circle of people to share things with, it's not a bad site. it's horribly broken, but there are some nice communities on it.

I only use tumblr for memes and aesthetic art, but it's still really hard to escape the hellhole of yaoi/sjw/pc shit that tumblr is infamous for. For example, just do a quick search of anything you're into and be amazed by the copious amounts of "character sexuality flags UwU" that teenage girls who cut themselves post for the masses. By the way, it's almost always females who do this. Anybody else notice that?

I quit tumblr because my mental state just kept getting worse and worse as I stayed on there. I don’t have anything wrong with many of the humanist ideals many people say in Tumblr, but I SWEAR to GOD, they GLORIFIED their mental illnesses and their moralities. Not only that, they always said the stupidest shit when it comes to SJW culture. I fucking hated it so much. I understand you want to be “good” but you aren’t any “good” if you’re shitting on people for how they are. Probably they’re ignorant. So just let them know that they’re wrong in a kind way and DON’T PUT THEM ON A STAKE! I hated that so much! Also the stupid sources that people put forth on Tumblr is just so annoying. I've used tumblr for about five years now. At first I thought it was really fun, and ocassionally I still do, but that site is so... cult-y. I rarely search the tags for my fandoms anymore, because you have a ton of those blogs that are completely pointless like "is-miles-edgeworth-gay-today" with posts like "January 23rd 2018- Yep, still gay" I remember once for this one character there was this blog and their friends head cannoned that said character was trans. Which is fine, I guess. But what wasn't fine is that they were all like "If you don't think he's trans then you're transphobic! How can you possibly not think that he's trans? It's totally canon that he's trans! Transphobe!" When it wasn't canon at all that he was (there was even evidence against it) but no, they'll attack people that wouldn't agree with them. Sometimes I'll log in after I haven't been on in a while, and within three minutes I'll see something on my dash that just makes me say "I'm done with tumblr for the day. No wonder I hardly use this site anymore." I'm afraid to post anything about any straight ships that I have because people just harass you if it isn't gay, and I have a lot more straight ships than gay ones. Anything having to do with feminism is the absolute worst on that site, some of the LGBT people on there are the most unacceptong people you'll ever meet, and the bashing of "straight white cis males" is astounding. Saying that being a straight white cis male isn't OK. Tumblr can be fun if you follow the right people and join the right fandoms (usually smaller ones) but it's more of a headache than anything and really makes me hate humanity sometimes. Really, really sorry for the long rant.

Tumblr in itself is a shit show. Over the past 5 years I've been on it things have gone from "lol let's make cute ppl versions of these inanimate objects and have fun with ourselves" aka what is now called cringe culture. To "lets call this person out for shipping something I don't like or not agreeing with me." It used to be a sorta chill place back in 2012 but bc of callout culture things have just been....badddddddddddd. Especially with a bunch of younger kids seeing full grown adults be assholes to others and still gain popularity. It has just become a dark place where if you're in any major fandom currently (Overwatch, SU, Voltron, etc.) you're going to see so much hate within shipping tags or character tags. And if you don't like the major ship of the fandom? Well too bad bc you're gonna get attacked by a bunch of whiney babies. It is not a good place to be where you want to ship what you want and just have fun. Your best shot at not finding discourse is to go to fandom blogs that only reblog content or post their own content and they don't cause drama on their blog bc it's tiring and overall useless. And with the note system after having it for so long it's not that bad(?) But only having reblogs be the only way to get yourself noticed on the platform is pretty dumb. Especially to just starting out artists who want to live of commissions/patrons. But what is worse on Tumblr overall is their reporting system. A friend of mine got doxxed bc she was shipping problematic stuff n staying in their lane. But this 15 year old anti didn't like and with the help of my friend's stalker, the anti posted my friends real name, first and last, a long with messages of what the stalker told the anti. N what did Tumblr do? JACKSHIT! They won't take down a person's tumblr for doxing bc "a name is not super personal info and we want ppl to have free speech" And yeah i know ppl who have disclosed their full names, but they do that bc they want to. My friend never wanted her whole name on Tumblr and she can't do anything legally bc she doesn't live in the same country as the anti Tl;dr: The inner workings and fandoms of Tumblr are shit and the staff won't do anything to fix it, but if you wanna see some memes and nice art here and there be careful and mindful into what you're getting yourself into. Thank you for giving such a detailed and nuanced evaluation of the problems with Tumblr. I have been on it for years now and have had a great experience, basically because of following fun and interesting people and dodging the flame wars. So much of the criticism of Tumblr comes from "TUMBLR SUCKS BECAUSE SJW" people, so it's really nice to see you go into how the structure of the site (which honestly anyone who spends enough time on it will tell you is fucked up) breeds problems.
