What size Swimon do you like better for your chatterbaits? I was thinking about ordering some but I'm not sure if the 4.25" might not be a little overpowering on a chatterbait?
@chrismichaelson5668
@chrismichaelson5668 4 ай бұрын
@@Pudge4400 I use the 4.25" and I haven't seen any ill effects of it being to big for it cause it is still a pretty slender bait. I think it helps it get behind the skirt enough to flip around. I also use that size cause if I do need to go smaller I can always just cut a little of the bait off
@Pudge4400

@@chrismichaelson5668 good point, you can always trim it down if it seems too big, but it's dang hard to add on if it's too small. 😁 Thanks for the reply. I believe I'll grab the 4.25's. 👍

@@Pudge4400 my go to is the green pumpkin with the chartreuse swirl. I have good luck with it. Don't know if the chartreuse swirl just adds a little color difference for the fish to key on but they hammered my chatterbait last year and that was my main trailer on a green pumpkin slobberknocker

Thanx Matt. The only off the wall trailer I' use that works great is speed worms Zoom. 4"-5" worth. The chatterbait hunts excellent with that trailer. Seems like trailers that have large flat surfaces, like the zako dampen the hunting action. I know the zakos work, I use them all the time but I make it hunt with the reel. Speed worm trailer does it on its own.

Havent seen anyone mention it but a big worm can be really good on a chatterbait. So far I like a 7" roboworm but i'm gonna try some others. The vibration carries all the way through the worm and gives it a really fluid snakey action. Crawl it around the bottom.

I've never used a pork frog on my chatterbaits, but I do like to use a chunk-style trailer occasionally, if I want a bigger profile, but I turn it sideways. Turning it sideways gives it more of a baitfish profile and mimics a panfish's tail really well. That said, it has to be one where the top and bottom are symmetrical, which is the main reason I haven't used the pork frog. The pork frog style where the appendages come out on the bottom of the mounting block would put the tail off-center turned sideways.

Been using two trailers One you recommend the Berkley Power Stinger same red color as you show On a 1/2 Oz black and blue chatter bait the skirt has great deal of glitter in it and all the strands are blk/blu bi-color I don't know who makes the bait but it is the only chatter bait with an oval blade I'm glad I have a bunch in 3/8oz and 1/2oz because they really work Matt I have made it a point to buy every piece of fishing equipment or luers I can from Tackle WH using your link because Your advice on luers and fishing techniques has made a big difference in my success Went fishing so far this year two times in a local lake waking distance from my home last few hours before sunset sees A LOT of pressure Water temps are from 38-42* Both days were unseasonably warm most if the day was above 65-72* both days storm front was moving in barometer was falling 10-12mph south wind Great conditions I was throwing the above 1/2oz black/blue chatter bait with a red Berkley power stinger strictly exactly as you recommend from shore and did I tare up the bass Last outing was 11 bass in four hours ALL were over 3lbs biggest weighed and released was 5lbs 7ozs Trip before that was 9 bass in 3 hours biggest was over 4lbs I did work the chatter bait as you recommended so as to make it move erratically I did try a jerk bait first but EVERY retrieve it came back full of grass so I switched to a chatter bait. My son was using a 5" Zoom Salty Super Fluke in Avocado Red Tail and he caught 6 bass all over 3lbs each evening but his biggest both outings were under 4lbs I noticed he was only using a straight retrieve and I told him he needed to impart erratical movement in his bait if he wanted to do better I don't know if my moving the bait erratically attracted bigger bass or not but we were using essentially the same chatter baits same rods and baitcasting reels only real difference was in our retrieves. Thanks Matt will order two of the trailers you recommend for sure three if the chunk frog is available Great Great content

3.8 fat impact is my fav. Jackhammer trailer. It seems to sync up well with it. I caught to many fish on it before I knew any better, so I still use it. Crushes at night. Yamamoto Cowboy is my fav trailer for some of my local summertime chocolate milk lakes. It has a lot of stuff going on and a large profile which has stuck me some real nice ones over the years. I bought some Spunk shad back when the TB guys started talking about them, I use them in the clearer local lakes in the early spring mostly. Before the Spunk shad I would cut off just the flat boot part of a 4.3 fat impact and then cut a little V out of the middle of the remaining tail to give it a realistic appearance. I still do when I want a different look.

Interesting.....didn't see the pork frog coming. That's something I'll have to try. You hit upon something that applies seemingly to 90% of the baits out there. Are you just working this via a "throw-and-retrieve" method, and as you said, sweeping or even snapping, your rod tip when pulling through vegetation? Almost like a lip-less crankbait? I know some guys are also using a "yo-yo" technique with this bait as well. This bait is so dependent on minimum level of water current to get that blade working, I always wondered how this was fundamentally used. With the trailers, I get the impression that the "hinged" trailers can sometimes work against the blade if they're not working in tandem. I always liked the Hog-Farmer style baits, as a directly result. It reacts to the blade, as opposed to having its own action (if that makes any sense). Can you shed any light on that? I think it can be real easy to over-think trailers in general, but especially with a bladed jig that has such a dramatic action to it.

There really is no wrong trailer.It depends on what you want to use the bait for .A example would be this tine of year with cold water a vibrating jig yo yoed with a paddle tail is deadly.When the bait is dropping down that paddle tail is imparting action.Agreed if fishing the vibrating jig faster a paddle tail is not a good trailer.I like a spunk shad in that circumstance.
