Thanks for another great video! Seems like every other figster prunes their trees for cuttings while fully dormant. But you have obviously had great success with this method! Maybe I will do some of each this year, and see how that goes. I’m in zone 9A (previously 8B) as I think you are, so our trees are at about the same stage now. First frost expected later this week. If I do my first cut and it bleeds a lot of sap, I may chicken out, though…. 😉 From your experience, it really doesn’t matter that your baby fig trees never had a full winter dormancy?

No it doesn't matter at all. For the cuttings that we purchase and propagate for our own orchard additions, we often get figs in the first year doing them this way.

Question: Why perlite vs sand for the gnats? Cost, watering, performance? Thanks for sharing this. I’ve started putting figs in my food forest. Ronde de Bordeaux, violette de Bordeaux, and LSU purp so far. What’s your favorite honey fig? Looking to add some.
@LazyDogFarm2 ай бұрын
Perlite is lighter and easier to apply than sand. Larger "grains" too so it doesn't take as long to cover the soil surface. LSU Gold is a solid honey variety that's tough to beat. But we do have some more complex honey types like LSU Hollier that are a little more "fruity."

Can you do a video of how to keep your new trees over the winter? Do we need growlights? Should we just let them go dormant? Will they lose the leaves no matter what and come back in the spring? Do they need to be kept in a 70ish degree structure over the winter?
@LazyDogFarmАй бұрын
These cuttings in the video will grow all throughout the winter in the greenhouse. For a potted tree, you can allow it to go dormant or keep it in a warmer area and allow it to grow throughout the winter.

@LazyDogFarmАй бұрын
I try not to let the greenhouse get hotter than 85 and no colder than 40. Other than that, we just roll with the natural ebbs and flows. I don't target a specific humidity because I have no way to control that. Success rate is usually in the 90s, but it can vary depending on variety.

So, I have a turkey fig. I want to graft various berry and honey figs onto the same tree. I don't have space for multiple trees. I've been told, by multiple sources, that this is impossible. Since you're in the business...are there any tricks to where I could pull this off?
@LazyDogFarm2 ай бұрын
I've never tried it, but have heard of lots of folks doing it. I think managing the growth of each individual variety on a single tree could be a little tricky, but I don't see why it wouldn't be worth a shot.
@KenJohnsonUSA2 ай бұрын
@LazyDogFarm thanks. What I have been told is that a fig will only favor itself. So, when you graft a scion to a fig, you have to force all of its energy to keeping the alien scion alive by cutting away all leaves and limbs of the root stock...because it wants to reject it. While this sounds like a normal grafting concetp, I am told figs are actually more picky. By having multiple scions, it is claimed that the fig will only favor one variety and will let the rest die. In my case, I want to graft a minum of five varieties...was thinking closer to 10 to be make a "fruit cocktail" novelty fig bush. At $20-30 a cutting possibly down the drain, I just wanted to have the best game plan possible.
@LazyDogFarm2 ай бұрын
@@KenJohnsonUSA Having never done any fig grafting, I'm not sure exactly how difficult it is. But maybe try one graft and get the hang of it before going all in. I have seen photos and videos of trees with multiple varieties though, so I assume it can be done.

It depends on the environment. In my smaller greenhouse I'd have to water every couple days because the sides stayed open a majority of the time. In this new greenhouse with a closed environment, I'm finding once a week is sufficient. And very light once a week.

So it came both of them and they smell so sweet, but they were just cutting.s you have and so when I opened to plant them, I saw the bugs and I put it on it at that time. But my fix did not come out until probably September they had leaves but no fig and then I saw them come in. I was just waiting took so long.. lol I’m finally late or figs and I saw one with a little bitty bug crawling on it that was the first fig, so I was scared to eat the other ones I don’t think I saw anything. But I’m happy for the one that survived in next year. Maybe I’ll be brave.r But I did try one with my teeth, but it didn’t seem so sweet. But yes, I’ll put a net over it next year the leaves are falling. It’s fall and the temperatures getting colder, but the leaves are still green and there are no figs on them. I have to watch more of your videos to see what I do now I was just gonna throw my blanket that I had on it all winter while it was growing. I’m just gonna put it back on. It’s a sleeping bag that with stand below your weather.. But seeing the video, I might take some branches off and maybe they’ll be bigger next year.
