Great video , as usual. Non toxic is just something we have to live with in certain locals and hunting sites.

Great video brother! For waterfowl I would recommend Dryfire for the primer sealant. Sealing both ends is key. The clear nail polish is perfect for the crimp. I’ve Seen two miss fires this year on buddies factory ammo! First one was a squib round where the shot rolled out the end of the barrel and wad lodged in the barrel and I had to rod it out with a Sapling for my cousin. That was a federal grand slam turkey load on my cousin’s 12ga, costing him a nice long beard at 30 yards. The next was a Migra waterfowl load 3” 1 1/8 BB, with a deep prime strike. I deconstructed that round leaking from the crimp for sure BB’s where rusted and the wad was tight but powder looked like Longshot completely soaked. That Migra round cost my buddy a beautiful black duck at ten yards. Sealing any hunting round is a big deal to me because I don’t know when most of my loads will be shot. If your behind on loading and loading for each hunt like I was last year then fine why bother but it will bite you eventually. I picked up one of my loads last year that got ejected in my boat god knows when. Not wanting to waste the shell I picked it up and put in the box of new shells. The next hunt pulled up on a beautiful drake mallard squib round from that exact shell. Now I start all my loads by sealing the primer pocket with dryfire fist, heads up it smells a bit so well ventilated area is best, then I finish with magic seal aka clear nail polish. Always seal or pay the price!

Thanks for the video! I loaded the same load from the hodgden data and had horrible results. My next step was to add mylar and buffer. Glad to see it's been done. It was just too open so we'll see the difference!

Rockin' the Lee LoadAll II, love it. Having bought mine decades ago I just started using it in the last few years. It has a cast metal base vs the newer models with plastic. Loading slugs only so far 'cause they're pricey vs other retail shotshells. 525 grain (~1&1/8 oz) Lyman sabot slug, WAA12F114 wad over Alliant Blue Dot powder, Remington RXP tapered hull. Listed fps is 1475-1501 depending on primer. I shot 2 over the chrono & got 1535 & 1843. Ouch! All my scatterguns are pre steel vintage, so the bismuth theme is of particular interest. Good info on tweaking taper hull wads to make them work in straight hull. I don't have that issue as I have a bucket full of Remington/Peters tapered hulls to go thru.

That 1843 fps reading was probably just the wad lol it happens

Great to see guys reload shotgun shells...use wax paper instead of the paper towel it resists heat better than the towel...an old Don Zutz trick.

Nice video, thanks. FYI, 1-3/8oz is 1.375oz, not 1.3875oz, although 1.4 is fine for a final weight.

I like the videos man they got me starting to reload shells for first time this week one question I have please is I only have the tps 2 3/4 slit wads will they work without using the paper towel to seal powder in most hauls even tapered hauls and also will the challenger hual with the slit 2 3/4 tps wad without paper towel and same long shot powder charge and 1 3/8 ounce bismuth load weight work just fine and use without Mylar wrap thanks
@theshotgunscientists11 ай бұрын
No need to use a paper towel with tps wads, they are meant for straight wall hulls.
@danielnalepinski38846 ай бұрын
I use a similar loading for ducks with #5 bismuth. Probably the best shell I've used. I'll use #2 bismuth for geese.

Do you have a load for bismuth that does not need wads to be flared? I have a lot of Winchester AA hulls, but I am new to loading shotshells.
@theshotgunscientists3 ай бұрын
There’s plenty out there I can’t think of one at the moment but plenty of data is available

It dawned on me that the towel is just another type of paper wad, as has been used for over a century of shotshells (muzzle loaders, even longer).

Does the half grain of powder given an extra 50FPS hold true for most powders? Found a 1oz bismuth load that is listed at 7950 psi and 1450 FPS using 27 grains of Winchester Super Handicap. If i bump that up to 27.5 grains can I hit that 1500 FPS mark?
@theshotgunscientists3 ай бұрын
@@davidmancini2198 you’ll see both pressure and velocity go up especially with the fast powders. That psi is really low, I personally would be comfortable bumping it up.

Can you use lead shot data? For example , 1 1/4 oz lead to a 1 1/8 oz of bismuth and still have a safe working load?

@@theshotgunscientists they sell some at Canadian tire branded as Imperial special long range after the oil IVI/CIL shells that are dark blue. In the past challanger mainly loaded red cheddites some of their steel loads were in orange hulls. Now a days that light metallic blue is their main hull they do load some silver and dark green in their steel loads.
