It happens and boy did that happen in the best spot. Because you are right, range is masking another problem with the EV discussion and that is infrastructure and maintenance. That is a hard ass topic at the best of times because I am a 90's boy and all these gas stations just exist, there was a time where that wasn't the case and EV's are at that starting point, which doesn't help when one maker uses a proprietary plug for its charging network but that is another topic.

You're 100% correct that if you have a non-Tesla EV relying on the CCS network, it's charging anxiety. I'm not even going to say infrastructure anxiety, because even if the infrastructure is 100%, you still have to deal with people at the charger. Be that lines, people done and not moving their car, using the wrong charging apparatus (i need 350kW because it's fast...even though my car can only charge at 150kW max), etc. Thanks for the full review of your car.

Hey, quick tip from own Mach E ownership experience (22 AWD extended range). If you find an EA station with a 350 charger that has the reduced power screen, but there are 150’s available - take the 150. I started on the 350 with roughly the same state of charge as you, and was getting about 80kWh - then switched to a 150 station after a few minutes. Rate shot up to 120kWh for a while. Was glad I swapped. Thanks for the video! Loved it.

@sunrisejak27099 ай бұрын
If the Mustang Mach e accepts 150kw and you plug into a potential 350kw charger you will never realize that level power. Even if the charger is rated at 150-350 kw it also depends on your state if charge. Max charging speeds is only possible at lower levels if charge and it will throttle back as the charge level in the battery builds. But this video is a yr old so I guess you've figured this out by now. Further you charged to 86% it's likely not the most efficient level to charge to. You need to plan your trip where it's likely charging what you "need" is possibly faster than aiming at really high levels of charge. It could be,,, stopping twice for 15 min is better than once for 40 min. Use A Better Route Planner and the route creation is really good. Also set a charge location in your car nab system and then set a backup nearby in your phone. Sounds like a hassle but the backup provides for less stress. Finally while it's nice to go 80mph and just power on if you can see your way to the speed limit or a tiny bit less you will likely get there faster if you need one less stop. Convenient? Nope, but a routine makes EV use not as frustrating while the infrastructure evolves. 👍

Great video Matt! One major gripe though. As a Taycan owner, there’s nothing worse than pulling up to a charging station when multiple 150kw chargers are free and there’s a Mach-E (which tops out at 150kw) or an iD4 (which also tops out of 150kw) taking up one of or both of the 350kw chargers. PLEASE, I beg, EV owners out there- you need to know the charging profiles of your cars so you don’t inconvenience others. It’s not as cut-and-dry as a gas station.
@cgamiga Жыл бұрын
Agreed! .. and especially, 50KW max Bolts, and also VW id.4 charging up to 100% on free charging... use the slow chargers, for the benefit of others! (curious, if the slow 80kw first charge stop, might have gone faster on the 150kw stall if existed?)

The 81kw is not necessarily due to EA throttling....since you are charging your battery at 40% SOC, more than likely the 81kw is due to the Mach E programming preventing too much juice from getting to the battery and overheating/hurting it. EVs like these have a pre-determined charge curve algorithm to maintain battery health.

The window up and down issue is not just a Mach e issue. I’ve owned 3 mustangs, a 2013 v6, a 2014 gt, and now a 2013 gt500. My wife’s 2019 escape has done it intermittently as well. They ALL have this issue, particularly if you time the roll up with an electrical event (AC compressor turning on, ignition turning off, radiator fans turning on) my more mechanically inclined friends pointed out it’s the window triggering a high/low load/voltage on the motor, basically simulating someone’s hand being stuck in the crack while rolling up so it panics and rolls the window back down to prevent harm. Strange they still haven’t fixed it
@cgamiga Жыл бұрын
Some Teslas have reported similar issues as well, after NHTSA or whatever made them adjust finger-pinch settings... may just be too sensitive? or dual-pane front windows are heavier and motor works harder? My older 2018 Tesla has no issues.

Thank you for the great video. I really appreciated how you separated range anxiety and infrastructure anxiety despite the best efforts of Electrify America. The pacing around at the charging station was a great way to show how lame the charging time can be in real life on a out-of-town trip even with a well planned route. Meanwhile there was a shot of the ICE cars smoking you time-wise even though you were speeding excessively. You just hook your ICE to the pump, go into the gas station to do #1, and come back to a fully fueled ICE car and go while you laugh at the Teslas stuck at the charging stations. EVs are for home charging and driving around the city.

For all of Tesla‘s issues, the fact that they focused on and built out their own charging net work, because they didn’t want to rely on someone else doing it for them is forever their own advantage. Their prices are way cheaper than all the other charging companies, I can’t believe that some of those charge more than it would cost to fill up a tank of gas. And I cannot tell you the struggle that I’ve had showing neighbors on the new Volkswagen ID4 how to charge their car - and so many of the Chargers are out of service, don’t charge anywhere near the advertised rate or you can’t get it to work/pay

They were very heavily subsidized and given opportunities by the American government that other Brands could not avail of. Elon is a master of "convincing" and/or political chess behind the scenes to get what he wants without actually paying for it. Exactly what a Con does best. I personally do not like a infrastructure that only caters to one brand. If gas stations did this, it would have hindered ICE considerably. Tesla isn't very good at building cars, and that is evident within 5 mins of driving one. But they do have the infrastructure nailed down and if they were to focus on that, the one thing they really are good at, they wouldn't even need to sell cars.

After detailing for a long time I've noticed that high quality interiors clean nicely, if a material starts disintegrating from the mildest cleaners it's basically cheap junk. After cleaning a Mach-E I was pretty impressed with the interior quality, it was a family car so it was pretty dirty but cleaned up nicely, and looked like a premium quality interior once cleaned. Also it was very simple and intuitive to turn off the touch screen to clean, and it stayed off while cleaning, I've noticed some new car touch screens are touch to turn on even in cleaning mode (BMW) which is very silly.

We’ve had our Premium 4X since Oct of 21 and love it. Unfortunately in the middle and southern part of the US, there isn’t the infrastructure needed to be able to road trip the car. You are so right about infrastructure anxiety. That is the problem. We have batteries. We need infrastructure.

Nope. I’ll stick with my well-maintained 2007 BMW 335i with JB4 tune, hydraulic steering, beautiful power delivery, and NO computer screens. We’re going through a transitional period now where a lot of things have gotten worse. Eventually things will get sorted out. I’ll sooner buy a 2010 Porsche 911 turbo before I buy some new garbage computer car.

If you are going to get an EV just get a Tesla. Yes Elon sucks but the car itself is superior to all other available EVs. This is because this is all that Tesla does this has been 100% of their focus since inception. Ford, GM, etc are just making EVs to not be left behind.

What about the build quality? The gaps in panels on every model? The 1-4 month wait time for absolutely menial maintenance appointments? No apple car play / android auto still in 2024? They too, are maddening. Just for different reasons

My wife has a 2022 MachE with CarPlay has been seamless. Also, not sure if it occurred in an update after this video was made, but they came out with a software update to allow for better handling of multiple phones setup with wireless CarPlay. You can now set a favorite / default as well as easily switch between the phone being used for CarPlay connection. Plug and charge has also been seamless for me (only public charged around 10 times in the 1.5 years we’ve had it). Charging speed is more on electrify America, but I’ve gotten expected charge levels at my local stations here in NY (they are all relatively new though). Honestly the only thing I don’t like about our MachE is the ride quality. It’s very bumpy (standard suspension) likely because there isn’t much room for suspension travel combined with the heavier weight due to design of the vehicle. Other than that, really have no complaints other than cold weather / winter range loss is a bit higher than other EVs due to lack of heat pump for hvac heating in the car.

As someone who lives in Phoenix (and literally just made this drive today) I have wondered about making this trip in an EV. Good to see that although there infrastructure isn’t perfect, this drive actually doable. Phoenix to So Cal and Phoenix to Vegas are the two important routes any future EV I would get would need to be able to handle. Nice review, this Mach e looks very compelling

re EV battery power and phoenix I have wondered how expensive batteries will fare in in the blistering scortching heat compared with much cooler areas ....heat is a known batteru killer (at least has been historically for lead acid) ...my dad who lived near phoenix replaced sooo many car batteries like one a year....he always bought ones with the best warranties for that reason will be interesting to see how EV batteries hold up in place like Phoenix

You are exactly correct about the infrastructure anxiety!!! I am so interested in the Mach-E, but I don't know if I'd ever not be panicked about the ineffective charging system. I used an EV Volvo loaner (after being a Tesla, Model S, P85D owner for 8 years) and could not get one single charger to work. I had to download an app to find the chargers. One was not there at all and the Harley Davidson dealership had no idea about the charger that was right in front of their facility. Across the freeway, there were four chargers. One had a guy sleeping in his car, one had no one in the car, one had a guy with a loaner from the airport in Dallas, Tx. heading to Houston, Texas (5 hour drive), and the 4th one had a cracked screen and was inoperable. I told the guy heading to Houston in an AVIS EV loaner that he should go back to the airport and get another vehicle that did not need charging.

No wonder everyone loves Tesla. It's much easier and all your issues that you discussed they have mastered for the most part.

I love that you guys brought up the fact that it is infrastructure anxiety and not range anxiety. I find it hard to explain that to people because they just refuse to understand. I've had an EV for the last two and a half years and I couldn't agree more. Although, I will still never go back to gas.

I'm old enough to have been subscribed to Matt since the year when Avicii was in his prime (which was ten years ago). I always appreciated the one takes, but watching those I couldn't help but miss the production value quality of the older videos with the voice-over narration and other nice touches.

Ive been watching matt since his Garage 419 days. I used to watch his videos before school started as a teenager, then stayed around for The Smoking tire. I'm glad this format is back, it gutted me back in 2013=2014 when he ended it and went to One Takes. Though I did still enjoy One Takes, Its just that they rarely made me feel content in the way this format does.

I recently had a Mach-E as a rental. Wow, I really enjoyed driving it. My hotel had charging for 6 vehicles, 4 of them being NACS and the other 2 were J1772 connectors which I used a few times during the week. I also used my EVgo account to charge up when the hotel chargers were not available. I could see myself buying a Mach-E. It is enough of a "normal" feel that my wife would feel comfortable driving it.

You can program the windows yourself. From the up position roll then down with the button the entire time. When it is fully down continue holding the button for a couple of seconds. Roll it up holding the button the entire time the for a few seconds after it is up. The auto up/down will now properly work. This process is the same for many vehicles.

The old blow on the connector thing makes me wonder, as an EV owner, should you just keep a few cans of contact cleaner and/or duster in the trunk? If it doesn't work, give it a spritz and blast out the plug?

Awesome video. My Mach E purchase was heavily fueled by Matt's ownership experience. And this reaffirms the fact that if you don't need to regularly rely on public charging for your charging needs, that there are lots of great vehicles out there that are not Teslas.

I have never had the window issue or the app issue. As for apple car play. In the beginning I did have issues with it. Now it seems to work all the time. But I always plug my phone in, I don't like how slow the wireless charging is. Also, there is a way to reboot your screen without turning the car off and on again. So if you don't connect, just reboot the computer screen by holding down the volume and the right(skip) arrow for a few seconds.

They really need to put some sort of awning over the chargers. Not only for the sun overpowering the screen, but what about shitty weather? When it takes as long as it did to connect that second time, if it was raining or snowing? Ugh. I appreciate the honesty about the button wear, but did you get the dealer to replace it under warranty? It seems like something most brands would cover.

I'm not a Tesla fan by any means, but the DC charging infrastructure is the reason we bought a Model 3. As our primary car, we need something that can road trip well. My wife isn't a car person and having to fiddle around with a fast charger isn't something she'd enjoy.

Mach-E owner with Android Auto. I’ve been experiencing the same issues as described in this video with Apple Carplay. I haven’t found much literature on this issue but it’s heartening to see that others are experiencing these issues as well, at least. Not only will my phone sometimes not connect, or only connect are a long delay, but every drive, my phone will invariable disconnect and then reconnect after a few moments. It’ll happen at least once every 10 minutes. I don’t know if it’s interference, and issue but bluetooth or wifi (I doubt it’s any of these as I sometimes plug in my phone and it still happens), my phone, or the car. I just want it to stop.
