My first memory with the GTR was during my internship at a Dutch car magazine in 2011. That was after the first facelift. I was given the privilege to return the GTR to Nissan Netherlands. Mind you; I just turned 20 then, so 550hp was quite a bit... When they gave me the keys the told me: "Be careful. Don't be "that" intern, ok?" I did two regular launches from a stop light, but nothing crazy, as I was terrified of breaking or crashing a +120k € vehicle. However, after I returned the vehicle and got back to the office, my manager told me that Nissan Netherlands immediately put the car on a scanner and found multiple error codes and overheating history. Turns out they had to replace the complete ECU afterwards to be able to fix it. And they were pretty mad. So I was immediately suspect, as I was the inexperienced kid who drove it last. Luckily for me, I had an older colleage with me during the return and he could testify that we did not do anything out of the ordinairy. Later that afternoon another colleage, who actually had the car for testing that week, mentioned that he put it on a dyno session to see if the car really put out 550 hp or not. Unfortunately the dyno session was during a severe heatwave and the car put on a shitload of warning lights afterwards. After a couple restarts they managed to reset those lights and they never thought anything of it, until Nissan Netherlands went to read the log of the vehicle... Still; special place in my heart that car. Fastest accelerating vehicle I've driven to date.

It may have not dominated the racing like the R32 BUT I would argue that number chasing game (0-60mph & ESPECIALLY on the Nurburgring) that manufactures have been doing for the last 10+ years is because of how ahead of it’s time this car was in comparison to other sports cars in 2007/2008. @@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo I never said it was a drivers car. Wouldn’t be foolish enough to make that ridiculous statement. What I’m speaking on is the technology behind the speed & the price point in which you could get that performance back in 2007/2008. The car is dated in more way than one TODAY. But back then, it was a game changer in the sports car world, in more ways than one. It was faster than anything else (not just in a straight line), & cheaper than anything else. The biggest game changer was its transaxle dct awd system. I understand manufacturers had been testing & setting lap times & going for records prior to the R35. But the public interest as well as manufacturers interest especially for marketing purposes skyrocketed after the R35 came around. We have been in a sort of speed war ever since lol. So yup definitely not a drivers car. Anything that doesn’t have 3 pedals & a manual gearbox, in my opinion, is out of & doesn’t even belong in the “drivers car” conversation. In that regard, all previous GTRs are more of a drivers car than the R35.

I think that when the GT-R came out 15 years ago, it was already so good that it's hard to see how to improve it, but Nissan was able to make slight changes year after year to the point where I think there's nothing else to really change at this point. In my opinion, the GT-R is the best that it can be, and it's still a really good performer today. The fact that it is as good as it is shows just how ahead of its time it was. I think the reason behind the laggy transmission in automatic is because this transmission was designed like that on purpose. It was meant to be used for racing purposes to be as smooth as can be and not really for driving slowly. I'd gladly buy an R35 GT-R today, but it's discontinued, so now I'm sad :(

Lots of dynomat made the car quieter inside and the stereo sound waaay better. I think the 2021 is definitely an upgrade over the 2015. Not so much of an upgrade over the 2017 model.

I still love the GT-R after all these years. It is time for it to go though. Let the 400Z be the top performer for a bit. and come back swinging for the next one in some amount of years.

When GT-R launched in US, price was in the $70k range. It was cheaper than the cheapest 911, which had only just started offering the PDK in 2009, despite running with the turbo that realistically stickered on lots at twice the price or more. An astounding performance bargain. The interior, lack of refinement, etc., were not THAT bad comparatively back then, and, again, relative price was amazing. I wanted one and would have bought one had I been in a position to do so back then. Now, price has gone up far quicker than inflation, but the same dated interior, lack of refinement, etc., are all still there. As much as I love the soul and character of this car, the rapid price hikes without addressing its very real weaknesses took it off my list as anything to consider buying. If this was still, say, $90k with a bit less performance but an interior and ride refinement at least comparable to previous generation 911, different story.

What about comparing it to the 2019 C7 ZR1 fully loaded. That comes to about $120.

That's what I was thinking. Even the C7 Z06 or a new GT500. Those are both better options in my opinion.

Also, the styling has aged wonderfully. I followed one while stuck in traffic the other day and it honestly still looks like a brand new design.

Got to drive one of these on the track and yea, they're fast, but that's not what I found most amazing about it...the grip, man. The grip. ESPECIALLY on corner exit. Corner exit is RIDICULOUS in these things! I just kept going harder and harder and HARDER, flooring it sooner and sooner, and it just WORKED! It was NUTS!! Set the track record for the day, too...and l beat a Huracan. 😆

You know what would keep this aging icon in the spotlight? A twin turbo straight 6, a manual transmission and an evolution of the r34 body

The real question is, would you be better off to buy a base manual Cayman and half a Stormy Daniels bribe or buy this nearly 20 year automatic.

GT-R has the same aura as an mk4 Supra. Is this better than a 911? Probably not because it's aging now. But would I rather own a GT-R for the history & specialness? Damn straight. Plus, it'll most likely appreciate more than a 911.

I think for what they charge for these it's too much.. I've seen them over 100k and used 8n the 90s,.. really I think maybe 60k for a good used one would be worth it.. they've proved fast.. 👌
