The reason I specifically passed on the CL Type-S is because, for once, Honda dropped the ball pretty hard and their automatic versions both were limited to 5 gears, didn't get the LSD, and were so unreliable that there was a class-action lawsuit that actually stuck. Coming from a previous owner, I promise you that finding one with a transmission that has already been replaced does not mean it won't happen again. I had mine done twice under warranty from Acura. Should definitely not buy one with an auto. Those automatic transmissions don’t get enough oil to the second gear clutch packs and they pre maturely wear out. I had a 2003 TL A-spec, had the trans replaced once under Honda’s extended warranty on the trans and got rid of it before the replaced one destroyed itself. Everyone was so excited when the 6-spd manuals showed up..... and literally NO ONE bought them! Lots of test drives but when it came time to sell them crickets. I remember the clutch being surprisingly grabby from the take off otherwise was a nice car with very little torque steer and a great sounding VTEC V6. The biggest negative was that it was an absolute boring design back in the early 2000’s and now it just looks homely ..... there isn’t a single line on the car that is even slightly unique or stylish. At times I literally thought I was looking at a Thunderbird, Mazda MX6, or any other number of wallflower coupes

@@TheSmokingTire I've also been trying to put my finger on what I didn't like about the exterior design since when you look at the elements that a coupe has (general proportions, how the rear of the greenhouse meets the beltline, etc.) , it would seem that all these elements are there on the CL and because it's a clean shape, it should look like a classic sleek coupe. But I think there are several issues that might explain why it wasn't a sexy coupe in the way that the 2nd gen Acura Legend coupe was: 1) the ride height is too high. I know car manufacturers needed to balance practical ride height with sporty looks and handling and that it was always a compromise, but the CL does ride a little too high even for a stock vehicle IMO. 2) wheels could be larger and tires wider (undersized wheels and tires was always an issue with 80s, 90s and early 2000s cars), and 3) needs more aggressive lower bodywork (not too aggressive that it looks like it's got a cheap ricer body kit on it, but just a subtle yet deep front spoiler, more substantial side skirts, a tasteful rear lip spoiler or molded-in rearward extension of the rear trunk (instead of a traditional rear wing that it normally could be optioned with) and a slightly more aggressive rear valance. But especially that front spoiler to make the car appear lower. I think if those issues were addressed, I think the CL would be a handsome coupe (still not on par with the Legend, but it would be a good-looking coupe). I always wished that the J32 motor from this car could be swapped into the 2nd gen Acura Legend coupe. That car is classicly beautiful and sexy. Always thought the legend was one of Acura's greatest achievements. Kudos to Acura for offering the Legend with a 6 speed in 1993 (5 speed prior I believe). Unfortunately, because the Legend's engine is longitudinally mounted like a rwd car, the J32 motor will not work with the Legend (not without some serious re-engineering at least). Oh well, I guess you can always find a 6 speed Legend (hard to find one) and supercharge the motor (but these would be high-mileage motors by now and may have a much shorter life with the added pressure of a supercharger, and I'd rather have the VTEC kick at high revs). Too bad Acura didn't give you a 6 speed manual-equipped CL type S to review. I haven't owned one but from I've seen in owner video's, the motor pulls very strongly with the 6 speed. Surprisingly strong. alot more fun. Nice balanced review though and I'm a longtime big fan of the channel.

ABS/Airbag and a V6 was SAFE for my first purchased car; it also had a MPG computer and a flip-up lever on the passenger seat you could reach from the drivers seat. Helpful - because coupe and dating in HS. The CL-S didn't have either (but exceeded else ware) * 91 Integra 5MT (black) dirt track car runner (Budd's Creek, MD where rubbin's racin'). 4cyl class - durable outside read-upper controls arms. Only the Integra GSRs were more powerful in class *03 CL-S (times) 2 Satin Silver - story below>> * 21 TLX APEC SH-AWD in Apex Blue (daily driver, with plans to trade in for a '23 Type-S...but different story)....10sp Auto, LOVE the SH-AWD...but have missed the 3 pedals ever since the INCIDENT>> Fast forward 27 years, I have just procured my second '03 CL-S, a CLEAN manumatic 5AT with 186k miles and a spoiler. My first was an '03 CL-S 6MT with 265k miles (one of ~3511, +/- a few if you read the forums) which was well on its way to a half million miles. Bulletproof transmission - had regularly towed a Coleman pop-up and HF utility trailer in style, with much better MPG than a truck! Welp, in 2021 I had dropped the subframe to replace the PS rack and install a new clutch - it was at that time a tornado came through southern New Jersey and flattened it like a pancake - 8' tree at the base came across the cabin. We were crushed! Both in Satin Silver grey and '03 model years, been looking for a while. New one parked at a Dollar General 30 min away, 100k less miles on the body, only shows one rust area (wheel wheels where the bumpers connect are prone to rot) and included delivery (take that CarVana!). Plan is to enjoy the 5AT for a bit, steal the hood/FL fender, a few interior parts (drivers torn grey seat bottom), and prep the donor 3.2 JA32A 6MT (anyone have a line on a Comtech supercharger?) for drop in when the manumatic goes. Known problem as mentioned - this one has been replaced at 110k). That'll be a bit of an overtaking: 3-pedal assembly, gauges (possibly, need to overcome a one-piece odometer) and center console section.

The comfort while spending around two hours a day to and from work and four to six hour road trips is nice. I did have to do a transmission swap four years ago but I felt the car was worth the experience. This car is heavy but that translates to good handling in inclement weather. 70 miles an hour in a downpour or rutted hyway it has been real stable. The reliability of this car has been awesome. Only other thing I had an issue with was a fuel injection sensor that was intermittent but a little research led me to the $20 part. Finding one from 2001 to 2003 with a lot less miles on it I would consider an update. I have been reluctant to move on from this car because comfort and reliability are hard to move away from.

I bought the '03 CL Type S back in 2016 and it's been my daily ever since, and parked next to my '98 CL Premium until I sold the '98 to my buddy. I do know I was fortunate at the time of my purchase, and I'd always intended to keep and maintain this beauty knowing that the market would eventually take notice and I'd never get a shot at one again for less than what I paid. TST has validated my instincts and that feels nice. If you're one of the lucky few with the Comptech package; I salute you! You're the rarest among the rare.

I just bought the 2003 type S today for a steal of a price and it runs amazing. Everything but the front overhead interior lights work as expected. Car does have that FWD steering pull, but it's very manageable once you get used to it (took me just a few turns). I don't think I've ever seen one on the road before in LA either and man. Everything you said was exactly why I bought it. It's reliable, fun, moderately fast, and luxurious. Edit: Drove it from California to Tennessee and back, thing didn't hiccup even once. Great car.

I had a 2001 CL Type S but I hated the slushbox auto tranny. When the 2003 6-speed manual came out I traded up to that. It had the Comptech headers & exhaust, but I didn’t get the supercharger. FUN CAR, I miss it sometimes. Had it for about 5-years

These cars are amazing... I’ve had my 2003 CL Type-S 6 speed for 2 years now... It has 308,000 miles as I’m typing this and I’ve abused it a lot... Only 2 problems I’ve had with it was snapping my right axle shaft twice (once after doing a reverse donut) which is a Honda problem and something that can be repaired in your driveway and the catalytic converters clogging so that gave me a good excuse to straight pipe it which made it legit sound like an NSX and turns a lot of heads... I recommend this car to anybody who has any sort of enthusiasm towards Honda products... You will not be disappointed!

Good point at the end Zack. Luxury isn't just about ugly quilted leather. I was helping a lady friend car shop way back and drove a 2nd Gen and a 3rd Gen TL and was shocked at how good the older 2nd gen TL felt to drive. The later one has a good look but was video gamey by comparison. I can sort of see why Hondas around the year 2000 have this following as being their modern golden age.

I had one. Six speed. It was very comfortable but there was a lot I didn’t like. It had a lot of body roll in corners. I mean they are pretty heavy. Steering wheel didn’t telescope (yet an older Acura legend did). Weird steering. Felt like I was sitting too high. Sort of weird looks. It was an excellent highway cruiser. Very comfy seats. Great visibility. Quiet. Lots of power.

I had one too, and I agree with your points. It did roll a lot and understeer. It was heavy and pretty slow, frankly. And compared to modern cars you felt like you were sitting above the car rather than in it. But you didn't care because winding out the J-series V6 was such a pleasure, especially long pulls above VTEC threshold in 2nd and 3rd.

@@michaelchimenti4989 agree with everything you said. Though it was fast enough for a 21 year old. I’m 25 now. I think it’s a great rare car but I feel like it’s overhyped. The transmission, engine, sound system, and interior quality and comfort were the highs of the car.

After 06 they held up better due to drive by wire. They started cutting power between shifts. Honda really screwed up putting the trans filters internal. If it wasn't for that there wouldn't have been a issue besides the 3.2 the shafts wasn't stout enough.
@HandsomeAlex253 жыл бұрын
How I describe the proper sequential shifting to non-car people: It goes with the forces. When you accelerate, you're pushed back in your seat, so pull the lever in the same direction. When you brake, you're thrown forward into the seatbelt, and likewise push the lever to gear down.

My 2001 CL-S has 300k miles and aside from the glass transmission that had a fragile 3rd gear clutch pack, it’s been very reliable and easy to work on. It has a good powerband all the way up to when the VTEC hits. Equipped with a set of 235 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires, it handles graciously around corners. The perforated seats do crack and rip, but the seats are comfortable. The most underrated thing about this car was the sound acoustics inside the cabin with the stock Bose speakers. If you upgrade the radio to an Alpine head unit that allows you to tweak the EQ, it really brings the Bose speakers to another level. The sound is better than my E60 M5 with logic 7 surround sound and surprisingly, I get more people asking about my daily driver CL-S than my M5. The downsides about this car are that being 20 years old, OE Honda parts are slowly getting harder to find and the 3.2L V6 does eat up a lot of gas especially as it ages. Compared to the 5.0L V10 on an E60 M5 that averages 11 mpg, the CL-S is a Prius but as a daily driver, I find myself at the gas pump more often than newer, more fuel efficient V6s out on the road.

I had an 03 type s 6 speed 1 of 3000 produced. Pulls a bit harder than the auto. 5.9 0 60 vs like 6.5 seconds. And the regular v6 manual accord 2 door is just as fast acceleration wise because it's 600 pounds lighter, top speed wise the cl is a bit faster I've hit 145, could've easily hit 155 160 and all I had was a aem cold air intake, which was awesome, came with instructions with pictures for my specific engine Tranny combo. Never had any issue with the car and I beat and I mean beat the cap out out of it Rev limiting it all the damn time. 200k miles never had any issue. With weight reduction and coils and chasis upgrades its a great FF car to autocross. Has more valves than the mustang gt that's why it's stronger. 24 vs 16 but less displacement more compression. I loved this car, but have driven very fast stuff like p100d, rs7,ctsv and sti because I was a valet so I got bored of the speed eventually because of my job spoiling me. Most reliable car I ever owned never had to worry about tranny since it was manual Totally recommend

I thank my dad for buying a 2003 Acura CL Type-S with the manual. The manual is the best part of that car: it's short, direct, and very positive. I never missed a gear. Unfortunately it had 300,000km+ on it now, and it's a little worse for wear. The engine isn't making full power (probably needs an EGR clean and valve clearance adjustment), and I now realise how heavy it drives and how poorly I fit in the cabin at 6'-1" tall. Great engine and transmission, and perfectly comfortable on long road trips.
